I have an atrium with a skylight. Before the sun hits it, the sky provides sufficient diffused light to take good pics of my wife's paintings. Outside, in the shade would also work. Five to eight feet away with my Nikon 5200 minimizes the curved edges. Then zoom in to fill the frame.

In Photoshop, I make a quick trip to (Image/Adjustment/Levels) while visually comparing the screen image to the original.

After pulling guides down from the ruler, I go to (Edit/Transform/Rotate) and (Edit/Transform/Warp) to finish my modifications. Notice I select an area safely outside the guide lines.

Finally, I crop on the guide lines

1. Is the picture shown the same ratio as the book? (about 3:2)

2. What is the title and where do the type elements go?

The left edge is a little busy, but if you shorten the width, that can be the spine.

The photographer says, "Lets play head butt." by lowering his head.

The Elk says, "Good times!" and plays along.

I have the Adobe RAW plug-in 6.7.1, which is the latest that will run on PS 5.

However, in searching for the latest plugin, I also found the Adobe DNG Converter which will convert my NEF file to Adobe's favored DNG (Digital Negative) format.

Once converted, I can open the DNG file in Photoshop . . . supposedly without degradation of the image.

I have Aperture 3.5.1 which will open the file and export it as a Photoshop PSD. But again, I wonder about degradation.

My problem is simple.
The solution? Probably not.

I have Photoshop 5 and downloaded the plug-in that was advertised to allow PS to open RAW (NEF) files.

It doesn't.

Question #1: "What do I need to do to get the RAW image into Photoshop?"

My Mac's iPhoto (arguably the world's greatest shoebox) reads, stores and exports them fine. I also have the Nikon software. So I can export the NEF file as a TIFF file, but . . .

Question #2: "How much degradation is there bringing that image to PS via TIFF"

Sharpshooter describes another measure of the photographer in control. By knowing what the camera does in its automatic modes, the photographer is in control as much as he would be had he dialed in A,S,F and ISO manually.
