I'm looking at a few lens and was wondering if there is any advantage or disadvantage to a push pull zoom lens?

Thanks

I have used the Canon 100-400 MKI to shoot air shows and find the push pull zoom quicker when tracking moving airplanes. Especially as they enter and leave the display portion of the venue. I would have to assume the same would apply to birds in flight. Also the 100-400 MKI has a tension adjustment to prevent lens creep.

Dodd's Camera is still in Cincy? Haven't heard of them for several years. Whatever became of Pete's Photo World? They were big supporters of Frank Wood's Big Bang, ie. the EBN fireworks. Labor Day weekend was always a great photo-op for the folks in the trip-state area. One of the best ops I ever saw was the Conservancy in Eden Park at Easter. That place was so popular it was almost impossible to get near it. Went one year and got turned away by the police. Went to the City View Tavern instead. Aways thought the view from the City View was spectacular, river, city, ex-ways, Mae West, bridges, etc. Porkopolis! What a city it is. "Vaz You Ever In Cincinnati?" is great reading about Cincy in the 19th century. Sunken' Lunken was also a good spot for shooting. Glad to hear the Dodd organization is still kicking.

I worked for Cord Camera from 2005 until they went out of business in 2014. Cord bought Pete's Photo World in 2005. Pete continued to work for us as an assistant manager until the end. We got a lot of traffic in the stores from people REALLY interested in buying an XXX camera. They would play touchy feely, ask a million questions and get opinions and an education. A week or so later they would come back in with their brand new XXX camera bought online wanting us to explain it to them. Almost all the camera manufacturers control pricing so regardless where you buy it the price is going to be very close to the same.. B&H was always 3 to 5 cents cheaper than we were but often had freed shipping and no tax. This is why the brick and mortar stores are going away.

I had on of these lenses and loved it until the aperture quit working. Contacted Sigma and was told parts were no longer available. That's when I became a proud owner of the 150-500. I think it is sharper than the 80-400 and obviously more reach.

For whatever reason, my CS4 install will not give me the option to save as a jpeg anymore. Nothing in the dropdown. Could I have accidentally clicked something in the preferences menu? Anybody have any ideas?

Make sure it is 8 bit not 16. In the "Image" drop down select mode. If not 8 bit it wil not save as jpeg.

Don't forget about the Tokina, which according to tests beats the Sigma and Tamron very easily in all categories!

Looking at the Tokina at B&H it appears the tripod ring is a $229 extra.

I have the Sigma 180mm f/3.5. I was fortunate enough to be managing a camera store when I bought it, so I had the opportunity to compare it to the Tamron 180 and the Canon 180. I chose the Sigma over the Tamron for image quality and the Canon for Value and nearly identical image quality.

On your crop sensor camera you may want to look at the 35mm f1.8
which will give you close to 50mm. just a thought

The texture of the clouds is so similar to the texture of the trees, seems like this would work well in B&W. Particularly if you could have shot from lower it might have merged the 2

Thanks Terry. Had no choice in the angle as I was on a tower. When I get time I will try a B&W conversion and see what happens.

To me the clouds are the subject here and should fill the frame more. Getting rid of half of the trees from the bottom would throw your focus more on the clouds.

Thank you Mama. When I get an opportunity I'll work on that aspect. I was undecided exactly how I was going to crop this down. This pic is no crop with a little help from PS4.
