It always amazes me just how many photographers don't understand Program mode and how to use it.

Totally agree. So many "photographers" poo-poo Program mode when they have absolutely no idea of its usefulness. I use it quite frequently when I am walking along rural roads and paths in anticipation of "targets of opportunity" - where I encounter a fleeting subject that may be gone before I could get my camera properly set up were I in A, S or M mode. Program works LIKE Auto, except I have preset parameters which Auto doesn't. Another feature of Program mode which many are unaware of is if I have the time and want to fine tune what Program mode has selected for me, turning the main and/or the secondary control dials will adjust the aperture and shutter speeds while keeping exposure constant, so if I want a smaller aperture or faster shutter I can get what I want quite quickly by just spinning a dial and watching the readout in my viewfinder.

in essence you can change the d500 from a pro camera to a point-and-shoot camera...

Technically, the D500, and D750 for that matter, are NOT pro cameras; Nikon classifies them as "Enthusiast Cameras". The only bodies Nikon classifies as "Professional" are the D5 and D810/810A.

My husband got me Photoshop Elements back in 2011 but I have only done just basic stuff with it. It is very confusing.

I agree that Adobe Photoshop Elements is confusing. I have several versions of Photoshop Elements, from PSE 9 to PSE 14, which came as an optional extra with various computers I bought over the years. I also have several versions of Corel Paint Shop Pro, from PSP 3 to PSP X9 Ultimate, which I purchased outright. As earlier mentioned, the hot setup is to get the Adobe Photoshop subscription for $10/month as Photoshop is the gold standard of photo editors. However, I am too cheap to spend $120/year for the rest of my life on a photo editor (not to mention that being retired living on a pension that takes a fair bite of my disposable income). I will stick with Paint Shop Pro and update every two years as the annual changes aren't worth it to me. If you watch the sales you can pick up PSP for $40-$60 when it is on sale.

Why Paint Shop Pro? It does pretty much most of what Photoshop will do - maybe not EVERYTHING, but certainly everything that I want to do. It is much more intuitive to use than Photoshop Elements and its syntax is nearly identical the that of Adobe Photoshop. If someone describes a Photoshop technique or you see an interesting Photoshop tutorial, you can generally use the Photoshop instructions step for step in Paint Shop Pro and get the same results, and save a bunch of money at the same time!

I have the Movo gimbal head. I don't have enough need or money to justify something like a Wimberely. To me the Movo head seems well built and works nicely. I can't comment on any other of their products, but I am quite satisfied with my Movo gimbal head.

The way I understand it, that copy of Windows is permanently attached to that one Dell computer. You cannot remove the C drive and install it in another computer and expect Windows to work.

Right. Cloning is the perfect way to install/replace a hard drive. I've done it many times. Putting that cloned drive into a different computer is where you run into problems.

I have four identical Dell Inspiron 17R 7720 SE laptops. I have cloned Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 drives and freely exchanged them between all four computers generally with no problems. The only issues I had was one of the drives was a different brand (all were 1TB 5200 RPM drives) than the other three, so when I moved that drive to another computer with a different drive ID in BIOS it had to install a different driver for the new drive (which took only a few seconds), and the Win 8.1 activation key pop-up mentioned in my previous post.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the one-computer installation limit for Windows 10 is tied to the CPU....

You are mistaken. Up to Windows 7 the software would record the identity of certain major hardware components of a computer and use that information to track that the software was being used on only one machine. The software had a limit on how much hardware was swapped out before it called foul. Starting with Windows 8 the Windows activation key is written into memory on the motherboard - not sure if it is in the BIOS or some other NVRAM. Apparently it is also written into the software as well, when I cloned a Windows 8.1 drive and installed it in another computer, every few days I would get a pop-up telling me I had an invalid activation key. I would just ignore the message and the computer kept working fine. The pop-up had a radio button to purchase a new activation key; just for yuks I clicked on it once. It opened my browser and took me to MS site which told me new keys were not available for that OS. I closed the browser and just went on computing with no problems. Now on my Windows 10 machine I see a place to enter an alternate activation key; I suppose that may be for folks who use a cloned drive in multiple machines and would therefore have one key on the drive and a different key on the MOBO.

Marketing departments are using the term "medium format" but the sensors are not equal in size to medium format film.

You are quite correct. But on the other hand, so are they. Anything larger than 24mm x 36mm and smaller than 4" x 5" technically is "medium Format". My medium format camera is a Mamiya RB67 so I feel your pain....

By the way, for those interested, the campaign SOAP OPERA, is over, now for the second season which is ongoing with the same political hacks and talking heads.

Your opinion notwithstanding, this particular forum is "General Chit-Chat (non-photography talk)". If you would like a discussion on depth of field, apertures, shutter speeds, IQ etc, there are plenty of other forums on this website to discuss those topics. This forum is open for alternative topics, political or otherwise. If there is a thread on here you have an issue with simply move on to another, but what is proper or not in this forum is not for you to decide.

Did you opt for defer in your settings?

No, I have updates set to automatic and defer off. My two updates awaiting download have been stalled at 16% for several days now. I had "download from" set to my PC only; I just changed that to download from everywhere and a "Download" button popped up. Windows is now trying to download "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607" and "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3205383)". After they are downloaded, I'll try another restart and see if that gets my stuff updated. This may hint of a work-around to control updating....

I just chatted with MS. Definitely, that option of being asked before installing an update has been removed from Win 10.

Well thanks all who responded. It looks like MS has screwed us again. Hopefully some white hat hacker will create a hack to restore this functionality. In the meantime, I still have two updates waiting to be downloaded that I can't force to download and Windows doesn't seem interested in downloading, and two updates waiting to be installed that I can't force to install and Windows doesn't seem interested in installing.

Does your screen look like the image I posted earlier? If so, where do you find "Update Details"?

It is probably the Build Number that is in variance.

No, my screen does not look like yours. I find "Update Details" by Settings>Update & Security.

For now I have turned automatic updates back on, since the four updates waiting for download and/or install appear to be something useful. Once Windows decides to update I will take another look and see if anything has changed. Apparently there is no way to force an update download and/or install so I'll just have to wait impatiently.

How do you navigate to, "Update Details"? What win 10 version are you running?
Thanks,
Mark

Settings>Update & Security

Win 10 Pro v1607

Life would be a lot simpler had Microsoft just left the old "Windows Update" setting in Control Panel.

What I am trying to do is find an option to manually download updates when I want to, and manually install updates when I want to, just like in the earlier Control Panel "Windows Update" setting. But I can't find a way to manually do either.

My "Defer Upgrades" box is not checked, yet under "Update Details" I have two updates waiting for download and two updates waiting for install, but no option to download the "waiting for download" updates or install the "waiting for install" updates. How do effect those two actions?

Does your "Settings>Update and Security" screen look like this? (I have Windows 10 Pro v1607 Build 14393.576 -- Settings>System>About)

No it doesn't. And my Settings>System>About doesn't show the version and build numbers, although I did find that I have v1607 on another screen.

This was not a freebie nor a forced upgrade. I tried the free upgrade twice (from Win 7 Home Premium) and it failed both times. I was doing some upgrading to my computer and was worried about the longevity of Win 7 so I bought a copy of Win 10 Pro OEM/Builders version and did a clean install on a clean hard drive. I THOUGHT I saw the "Windows Update" setting in Control Panel on this computer after the install, but I may have been thinking of my Win 8.1 machine. I did find a somewhat limited functionality for setting Windows Updates in the "Update and Security Settings" but it doesn't offer the flexibility of the old "Control Panel>Windows Update" settings.
