No U1 or U2 Mode on D500, Why?

The D7XXX series and the D750 have U1 & U2 modes while the D8XX has something I think is called "Banks" that reset anytime a operation change is made while using them unlike the U1/U2 which are "fixed".

I find the U1/U2 modes to be very helpful on my D7000 and was very surprised that the D500 did not have them.

Any idea why Nikon does not include these modes on their Pro Level cameras; do you have to be a Pro to understand the rationale?

Supposedly the built in Flash was eliminated because of a potential weather proofing problem but I do not think that would be the reason for not including the U1/U2 modes.

Thanks, Bill

Bill, call 1-800-645-6687 between 9AM and 8PM EST and ask them. They probably have the answer.

Very simply because it's a Pro level camera. U1 & U2 options are only used on Prosumer level bodies like D7200, D610, ans D750 currently. Same reason you don't see "Auto" mode on Pro level bodies. Not needed or wanted.

I understand the answer but not the rationale. "Auto" mode I can see would be superfluous but but I'd think U1/U2 would be helpful; guess that's why I'm not a Pro. Might be one or more other reasons as well :?.

Thanks, Bill

I have several Nikon "Pro" level camera bodies. They all have an "Auto" mode. It's labeled "P" for Program Auto. So I would have to disagree with your comment :~)

Sorry but Auto mode and P are quite different. Read your manual if you have a camera with it.

Nikon confuses the issue by including the word auto with all of the non-M modes. It isn't the same as Auto mode, which does not allow you to control anything. P mode is the same as A or S on what you can control.

The above statement by MT Shooter really reeks of snobbery. If its a useful feature, why not include it? Are you saying that professionals don't want a quick, easy way to modify their settings for specific uses?

?????
Facts are "snobbery"?
That statement clearly shows you will never have the need of a Pro level camera.

That makes me learn what the heck U1, U2 does as I don't have any cameras that have them.

This is not a useful feature for pros. They know their cameras, and how to set them, use them almost every day. U1 and U2 is for people who forget how to set their cameras up for different situations. It is not very professional if you can not remember how to set your camera. And also everything you do not need is just in your way if you are a pro. Even I do not use those settings, because then I would have to remember them and figure out if they are correct for the exact situation I am shooting in. For my kind of shooting manual everything is always the easiest, not Program or Auto or Scenes or U1 or U2. Maybe MT Shooter should have explained this in more detail for you, it is understandable that some people do not get this easily.

Are Nikon's U1/U2 modes similar to Canon's customs modes, C1/C2/C3?

Agreed. I find it easier to decide what settings I need for a particular shot or series of shots and adjust the camera for the situation at hand than try to remember what settings I had set in U1/U2 or a bank and hope that was what I need right now.
