In comparison, the 300/2.8 primes (both Canon Mk II and Sigma) are just over 5 lbs.

And the slower but smaller 300/4 IS is 2.5 lb., the 100-400 II is 3.5 lb.

What's been your experience with the Sigma's OS? Have you used Canon IS lenses, to be able to compare?

I also have the Canon 300 F4 with IS. Have been using that for 3 years. Nice, light and fast enough for birds in flight. I have not used the Sigma for birds in flight but gave it a work out @ Merritt Island last month on my Canon 7Dll. shooting from the car.

I really want a Canon 300mm f/2.8 but it's pretty pricy. I've borrowed one a couple of times in the past, and the sharpness and quick focus are remarkable. However, I'm also considering, as an alternative, the Sigma 300mm f/2.8. I like the idea of getting the IS (or OS as I understand, with Sigma) models.
Does anyone have experience with either of these with sports photography, and am I justified in preferring image stabilization?

MT put me on the sigma 120-300 2.8 zoom with OS. This lens is the second in the line. found one on Ebay for $1400 vs the new version @ $3300. Image quality is about the same. I mostly use the lens on my tripod with gimbal head as it weighs 8 pounds. So far it is a great lens with fast focusing.

Thank you everyone for your help. Especially finding where Bridge is hiding, and how to turn it off.

Trying to install the free NiK Software but keep getting the error message to close Bridge.exe. I do not use Adobe Bridge so where do I find it to close it. Used search function on Win 10 but nothing shows up. I do have Photoshop loaded on the computer but use Lightroom 5.7 for cataloging.

I have never had any interest in video but the wife just gave me a GoPro Hero4 for my birthday.

Now I'll have to learn to use it. Could be fun. I'm already thinking of applications for it.

Bought the Hero 3+ plan to mount it on my Corvette and do the Tail of the Dragon. 318 curves in 11 miles in the Smokey Mountains. Thanks for the info on the Adobe Video processing software.

get rid of the sigma the canon lens is hardly a kit lens and is more versatile then the sigma. What makes a kit lens less appealing than something that costs less?

Getting rid of the Sigma and the 7D, the lens was not that fast focusing at the Callaway Gardens Predator raptor show, had trouble with the down the throat shots coming straight at me. But got some other great shots.

Great deal. I believe I paid $1700 for the body alone from B&H but they had a price reduction a week later and refunded two or three hundred back. I can't remember $hit.

I hate to see what the pawn shop paid for it!

Got a heck of a deal on a Canon 7D Mk 2 with a 18-135 mm kit lens for $1300.00 USA warranty from a TN. pawn shop on Ebay. Camera and lens were brand new except for the 4 shots the pawn shop took. I have a 4 L glass lens that cover the the same range so should I keep the kit lens? Or sell it to reduce my investment in the new camera. Currently have a 5D Mk 3 and selling my 7D and 28-70mm Sigma.

Was in Yugoslavia during 1967-1968. We spent a week in Split, and a lot of us took the tour to Dubrovnik. The USS Beale was the first American naval vessel into the country since WWll. The city back than was the cleanest city I had ever been to.

As several have stated, you're seeing motion blur in the ball. Some math may help here. Say it's a 90 mph fastball. That's about 136 ft per second, or upwards of 1600 inches per second. So in that 1/800 of a second your shutter was open, the ball moved about two inches, or about 2/3 of its diameter (typical diameter is about 2.9 inches), which seems about right from your shot.

To come even close to freezing the ball--to keep its motion down to, say, a quarter inch, you'd need a shutter speed of 1/6400 of a second.

But I also agree with the folks who say the apparent motion here is appropriate. So...good enough in my book!
As several have stated, you're seeing motion blur ... (show quote)

Thank you for you calculations. I appreciate your input. 20 degrees this morning and I am staying inside.

Your picture is not bad To stop the ball you maiy have to speed up your shutter speed to 1/1600. This would require the ISO to dubble to ISO 1000 or open aperture to f 8. I think it is blurred by motion, not out of focus. David Only other thing is buy a faster more expensive lens.

Thanks it has been cold 46 deg. and windy no fun taking pictures, supposed to be nice over the weekend and Mercer is at home.
