This was taken using partial spot metering, on the white, using plus 1 stop compensation. I used 1 stop instead of my usual 1 and 2 thirds because I anticipated that the spot would contain some grey as well as white.

Do we really need members with this attitude? He posted this after only one days membership! Read his profile and think of 1939.

I tend to use my powershot G12 more than my 5D MK 2 mainly because of the swivelling viewing screen. Many shots are best taken from low down or high up and the G2 screen makes this much easier for people like me. I am 81, if I kneel down I can't get up. Even so, there is no doubting that for quality results with controlled depth of field etc. full frame beats the G2 easily. When I need the quality I take someone with me to help me up and maybe carry the tripod.

Maybe my first post in this thread was a bit flippant since it was more or less ignored. I have won many club competitions and done weddings. In fact, I well remember returning home from the club one night and saying to my wife "I got first, second and third places tonight." She replied "I'm leaving you," and that was after nearly 40 years of marriage. Neverthless, I have seen so much good work by others during my 60 + years experience that I would hesitate to number myself any higher than 1.5. If I could turn out my best work consistently then I might put my self up as a 2.

I was a 1.5 until I bought a camcorder and since then I have become something like a 0.5. It has been a serious blow to my still photography because the movement brings all to life.
I live in hope that when everything settles down my former enthusiasm for still images will return. Advice welcome.

I agree, spot metering would be good but you need to be careful. If you spot metered off the white shirt it would be necessary to use + 1.5 stops exposure compensation, otherwise, it would turn out mid grey.

Hi Bluduck,

No I have no idea where the name came from. I did a search on Google but to no avail. Sorry.

Both images, of the same bird, were taken with an EOS 100/400 mm lens, hand held but image stabilised. This is a common bird in the hedgerows around Southwell, UK.
Crit. welcome.

Yes it is necessary to account for crop factor and if fitted, image stabilization although IS is on your side.

Yes I do that as well with the result that I have never taken a picture that I am completely satisfied with.
