HI,

I would say to hold off on back button focus until you solve the Image Quality issue you are grappling with now.

Q: Do you get sharp images if you use auto?

You should be able to grab focus(no matter what aperture you set) by holding the shutter release 1/2 way down. Does this work for you? You can also (i don't know your model) set a focus point as a default. You place that over your main subject, press 1/2 way down then shoot. If you want better speed, you can place the focus point over the subject, press 1/2 to get focus, then recompose the shot before pressing the shutter the rest of the way down.

Not sure if this help. BTW, can you post a picture illustrating the difficulty you are having as well as what f-stop, shutter, and ISO you were using?

I like that piece more everytime i see it. I had not known the backstory however. Thanks for sharing that! I now live in Columbus (previously Egypt) and my wife and I adopted our new born son from a woman in Bucyrus a year ago.

Most of the comments I read were directed to why this wasn't a suitable picture, beyond the permissions aspect. If I'd have shot that photo, it'd have never seen the light of day, no less submitted to a stock photo house.

Agreed. But the permissions aspect is what the Op was asking about!

What are we? Photoholics Anonymous? A support group?

To be honest people have been relatively kind and restrained, a rational criticism of this image and the issues relating to publication or sale would be quite hard to take, there are so many things that need improvement.

I agree that most people have been so. But still not what the OP asked for. And I hardly think the post above mine is kind or restrained.

Go to your local camera store (not big box store). Bring a SD memory card with you. Talk to the folks working there and handle every camera you can afford (and I would seriously look at mirrorless). Shoot some with everything and they review the photos when you get home to see what you liked. between the feel of the camera and how it shoots, plus the image quality you'll end up making a great choice. And BTW, there are very very few 'bad' choices out there.

I recently dropped my DSLR kit for mirrorless as well. It was just too much to lug around especially with a new baby.

I did about 6 months of research as well testing of multiple brands, models, and lenses of Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, and Panasonic.

I ended up with a Fuji X-T20 (think baby X-T2) and with the money I saved I grabbed an Olympus OM-D E-M10ii. I have not regretted my decision in the least.

I'd be happy to share my thoughts if you have specific questions about each mirrorless and how it relates to what you shoot, just drop me a private message.

If I had to pick only one I'd go Fuji all the way. But that's me, and my needs are my needs and no one elses.

My goodness, Hogs!

Why all the snark about the image?! The OP did not request anyone's evaluation of the work.

Are there things that could be improved in the image? Yes.
Are there things that could be improved in yours and mine??? YES.

Constructive Criticism can be valuable and inspirational. Dumping on someone's stuff only makes you smell bad.

I would say that the distinction is up to the viewer. Snapshots being something that a picture has been taken of and a photograph presenting to their eye an indelible quality that makes it, for them, artful.

you can pickup and Olympus OM-D E-M10 mark ii refurbished from Olympus for $300 w/o lens. Then pick up whatever lens you like for it (they sell those refurbished too). You can also put a square trade Warranty on the purchase and BINGO, new camera with warranty coverage.
