Thanks...do not use a tripod, birds don't stay in one place long enough...I have found that clarity is often improved by shooting with the shutter speed as short as is possible...as to the DOF, the key for me is too shoot with the lens as "open as possible" which nicely matches up with the short shutter speed...all of this then means that I am constantly adjusting the ISO as the light alters.

I must say that the in-body image stabilization is fantastic with the Olympus OMD EM-5. I must also say that while the auto-focus is extremely good with this camera, I do try to fine tune the auto-focus manually when time permits.

Hope this helps

Thank you Harve! I appreciate the tips and I will play around with that. I'm pretty good with Aperture settings and getting depth of field. I'm working on better clarity, especially from far away. I'll try playing with shorter shutter speed and differing ISO.

I believe the OMD is a mirrorless camera. Great to know you get such nice clarity on it. Do you have the same results from longer distances?

I like the clarity and depth of field you get with your bird shots Harve. They are beautiful. I'm rather new at this, and would appreciate any thoughts on how to get this clarity. Are you using a tripod?
If it's not appropriate to ask on this thread please let me know. I enjoyed another bird photo you posted a few days ago. Nice work!

Hi there!! My name is Beth. Photography has been an avid hobby of mine, but never got to take a class or learn all the necessary things to advance my photography. I have a Cannon Rebel T5i and a Rebel T3i with 3 lenses. I used to shoot only Nikon and am really struggling with which cameras are best to start out and to be able to advance with?? I would love to advance into sports photography, with more classes, because my youngest is a varsity cheerleader and the school needs help in this area. Does anyone suggest a camera and lenses that will allow me to progress?? Thanks for reading this and I'm excited to be here!!!

Hi Beth! Welcome! I'm new around here too. Lots of great information and helpful folks around! I'm not sure about lenses, but the Canon EOS 7D Mark II, the new model, is great for wildlife and sports. It shoots up to 10 frames per second. Lots of other features. I started on the Rebel T5i and the Mark II was a lot more complicated to learn, but worth it.

Some legs from today
they are building a new grain elevator 1 1/2 miles from our house sure doesn't look like the good old type we think about but sure will be close and quick. We had a tour today-the last day they are letting people up on the platform. They started pouring cement on Wed. and it goes on non-stop till it is done Monday or Tues next week. They are at about 40 feet now and it will be 130 when done. It sure is going to change my view to the east not sure yet if that will be good or bad.

Corona and LA, It's supposed to ease up a little today. Maybe we can all breathe again, and sleep, and get outside and take some photos too!

Good advice,Marc! That's what I did. I also bought my first camera at Best Buy because they let you return it. I bought a model down first and returned it pretty quickly.

Go to a camera store where you can hold and get a feel for how you like them. Any good store should be happy to help you make the right purchase. Don't let them push something on you that you don't feel is right for you. What you will buy and use is a personal and expensive decision. welcome to the HOG

HI Jing. Another So Cal gal here, and I just joined two days ago. Seems to be a wealth of information here.

My starter camera was a Canon Rebel T5i. I don't know much about Nikon.

Hello. My name is Jing from San Diego. I am seriously considering starting photography as a hobby and came across this site from browsing online. I have never held a DSLR before let alone own one. I have used several point-and-shoots before but that's the extent of my photography experience. I enjoy kayaking and would like to be able to combine both hobbies when possible. I am still in the market for a good beginner camera. I am inclined to go for the Nikon D3200 at this point, mainly because it is quite affordable and has lots of features good for beginners like me. I would appreciate any comments at all. Am I on the right track or can anyone suggest a better camera

Hi M.A., thanks for the re-visit. I agree, the nail in the first shot adds to the story, esp. because the bird seems to be expressing an opinion. I thought the nail might be a distraction in some of the shots where the bird was gazing elsewhere. I appreciate your comment.
Regards Phil

Sure thing, rockdog! I'm always drawn to photos of wildlife that tell a story or show a behavior.
