Please do. How do l begin to do this. Open lens when l have a fixed,f stop of 1.8? Dont understand.

Your lens, the Sony DT 35mm f1.8, is not a fixed aperture lens. It can be set from f/1.8 to f/22. When you use shutter mode (S) the camera will automatically select the aperture for correct exposure. You should first familiarize yourself with your equipment and all its controls. Next I would suggest you read book titled "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson, it is often recommended on UHH for good reason.

Has anyone took photos using the Bokeh method? I would like to learn how to accomplish this. Am use a Sony DT 35mm f1.8 l have used S shutter and used every speed available and could not accomplish this. How do you det up the camera to accomplish this effect?
Thank You.

With the 35mm f/1.8 lens, try using aperture mode (A), set the aperture to f/1.8. The camera should select the appropriate shutter speed automatically. You will need a foreground object for your focal point. The farther the background is behind your focal point the more it will be out of focus. The quality of this out of focus area is described as bokeh, generally speaking the softer the out of focus area is, the less it will distract from your subject (focal point). The less distractions there are in the background, the better the quality of the bokeh is said to be.

I would appreciate any advice regarding the purchase of a "quality" monopod.
In other words, a monopod that could accommodate a Nikon D5 with a Nikon
200 - 500 mm lens attached. Additionally, the monopod should be of quality
workmanship and usability. Thank you in advance for your thoughts and
pro/con recommendations.

I use a Feisol CM-1471 with the optional stainless steel spike, combined with a RRS MH-01-40 LR Monopod head for my D500 w/200-500mm lens. With a 37mm top tube, this monopod dampens vibration well and is quick to deploy or adjust. With this equipment, any adjustments can be made with one hand by touch.

I use a Feisol CT3442. It weighs 2.31 lbs, and Feisol rates it at 55 lbs load. It folds to under 20" and with a medium ball head will be around 3.2 lbs. I am 5"11" and don't have an issue with it's 55" height - because after you factor in the head the camera's eyepiece will be another 8" or so higher. I don't know of a lighter stronger tripod. I have used it successfully with a 300mm lens and a ball head (Sirui K30X, and Arca Swiss Z1), and it was ok. I am not sure if it is stable enough for 400mm, though. If you use an unrestricted (not locked down) gimbal, it should be OK.

I also use their bigger CT3472, but it is 4lbs without the head, and is quite a bit more stable. I reserve that for my 600mm F4, which I will use with a 1.4xTC on occasion. It is rock solid, and without the head, will still fit in a carryon bag.

I have followed Gene's recommendations in the past and purchased Feisol tripods. They are excellent! I'll second his recommendation.

I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me if the D500 can be set up to check an image at 100% with one push of a button. I can not seem to find that. My D750 does that and it is very helpful for checking sharpness. Right now it goes to about 70% and you have to hit another once or twice to get to 100%. Thanks for your help.

When reviewing an image on the D500, you can use the touch screen, you can either double tab the screen to zoom in to 100% or pinch zoom (like on a smart phone) and it will automatically stop at 100%, pinch zoom again for greater magnification.

Thank you all very much. It shows this error on a CF Sandisk Extreme III 4 GB; on a Lexar Professional 4Gb; and a SD Lexar Ultra II 4GB. Taking your advice I changed cards. Problem solved. Saved a few quid.

If you are shooting 14 bit lossless RAW, the capacity of a 4GB card is only about 52 images with a D800, I second the recommendation you purchase some larger, high speed cards. For proper camera operation, you want cards rated for transfer rates higher than 80MB/S. Best of luck with your cancer and get out and take lots of pictures.

I ordered my D500 Nov 8, I contacted B&H about the new offer yesterday by email and today they responded, they are shipping the battery grip and the backpack to me at no charge. Thanks for the heads up on the new offer!

I just bought the Nikon d500 body with $200 off . I got it through B&H $1796 the I purchased the mb17 battery grip $371 bucks. One day after the purchase I see Nikon has $200 off plus the battery grip free. I hurried up and got the deal because the ads said buy by the 19th of November to get the sale. It took a few days to get here now the new sale goes through the 26th. But apparently the sale didn't go off but they extended it with more. Any suggestions from my fellow hoggers

Hi Everyone ,
Ive been Using my Nikon D200 for a few years now with Great Results .

Thing is Ive had this Craving to Buy a Full Frame Perhaps a D610 ..
My main reason is for Better Bokeh , Wider View etc ..

Is it really worth it I ask .. Massive outlay of money .. and of course I will need
all new lenses ..

Has anyone made the switch ? do you think you gained much ( apart from the prestige ..lol )

Comments welcome
Thanks

I switched to full frame and for me the answer is yes, it was worth it. The truth is 90% of what I shoot could be done with a crop sensor body, but that 10% is important to me. For me those extra 2 stops of working room are worth it.

I recently purchased a Nikon D750. I really like the quality of the pictures that it takes. I also like is how quick it can focus on my constant moving grandchildren. The frames per second is great when shooting moving kids. My concern is that I probably will not use most of what this camera will do. So I'm asking is there a camera that will take the same quality of pictures, focus as quickly and has as fast as frames per second that doesn't cost as much. If this is my best option I will be happy to keep taking great pictures with the 750. I just thought I'd get some opinions from the wise and experienced Hedgehog members before my option to exchange runs out.
Thanks!

Don't worry, as your grandkids grow and their interest change, you will find yourself using your camera in new ways like sports, music, or theater. You might have to add a lens or two but the D750 should be equal to any challenge you will face in the future. A good choice, have fun!

I am thinking about trying a ND filter, but not sure if I should start with a variable or solid ND filter. I shoot with a Canon 5DM3, and have a variety of lenses, including a 16-35 f/4L, 24-105L, and 70-300L. The purpose would be for landscapes, waterfalls, smoothing water, as well as portraits in a brightly lit area..I am concerned about vignetting and image sharpness with a ND filter…Does anyone have suggestions as to which way to go, solid ND or Variable??? And if anyone has had experience with different brands, I’d appreciate info about that as well..
Thanks!

Topaz Impressions 2 has been released. If you have the original Impressions the upgrade is free. I downloaded and installed the upgrade, however, the presets will not load in this version. I have reinstalled twice with no luck. My Open GL is sufficient to run the program, but no presets. Anybody else experience this?

I have installed Impressions 2 and I have the presets. If you go to the View pull down menu and select preset the preset bar on the right should appear, just like version 1.

I'm planning to buy Nikon D7200

Best Portrait lenses
Nikon 85mm f/1.8G
AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G
AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G
AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G

And Zoom
Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX VR
or AF-S Nikkor DX 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

On the D7200, I would use the 35mm f/1.8G and the 50mm f/1.8G, both are reasonably priced and are very good. For a zoom, I usually use the 18-140mm, but if I were to consider an 18-300mm zoom I would look at the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR instead of the 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR. The newer version is considerably lighter and $300 cheaper without losing much performance (f/6.3 vs f/5.6).
