I have been trying to use Lightroom 4 (running under Windows 10) to do a tethered capture with my Canon 60D. I connect the camera to the laptop by cable. A dialogue box opens asking me to specify my camera, and I click on Canon 60D. I load Lightroom, click on File, Tethered Capture, and the bar appears for me to control the camera. But it has the message "No camera detected". Yes, the camera is switched on and has a freshly formatted memory card inside. But I do get the little blue circle to show that an operation is in progress, and it doesn't go away.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You seem to be happy with the Canon software, so this may not be important. Tethering with Lightroom does have some capabilities that Cannon EOS utility doesn't have. I like the ability to show my results on Lightroom Mobile.

To solve your problem:

Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom\tether_canon.lrplugin folder.
Backup and delete EDSDK.dll, EdsImage.dll, tether_canon.exe, and tether_canon.lrplugin.
Replaced them with the corresponding files from LR 5.7

Note: You can use Adobe CC to install previous versions to get these files.

Good Luck,

I'm looking for the thread in which there was an Excel spread sheet showing the values of different exposures for normal and ETTR images.

Can anyone remember this thread?

In an earlier response on this thread, I said "Windows doesn't include the volume name in any path information, only the volume letter."

As Gene51 pointed out, this was not quite correct. What I should of said is:

"Windows file system doesn't use the the volume name as part of the path information when accessing a file. It does however, display it to the user in the Windows Explorer dialog box."

There does not seem to be a consensus on the meaning of ETTR among those who think they practice it.

However, metering the brightest portion of the scene and placing it anywhere other than at the right end of the JPEG range (ETTR) or a little further (EBTR, close to the right end of the raw range) is generally considered to be ETTR or EBTR. Whether or not this results in a washed out JPEG will depend on the dynamic range of the scene.

Placing the brightest reading anywhere lower (like Zone VII) is not ETTR. It is using your Zone System experience to anchor your exposure around that placement.

The same is true if you take a reading from a black cat and deliberately place it on Zone III. That's not exposing to the left either.

The film practice of "expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights" for B&W negatives was similar. The idea was to meter a shadow area and place that in Zone I, II or III and then vary the development to get the rest of the zones to fall into place. The reason this worked was that over or underdevelopment would not affect the shadows in the negative (much) but would change the highlight density and thereby the contrast.

Did you really mean what you wrote? I think this edited sentence is what you meant.

Just purchased Goodsync to help with keeping on top of backing up all of my important files ... pictures among the most important.
Pictures are currently stored on an internal hard drive with a back copy on an external hard drive. Master file folder with subfolders of different shoots over the years, all subfolders named appropriately so I am able to find them. The LR catalog is stored in a separate folder with the pictures.

Now for the question: all current pictures are in a "master file folder" on internal drive "G". I want to rename that drive (think it is called a "volume name") Master Folder. After I do that I will need to let LR know where all the pictures are, about 1.5 terabytes. Is anyone able to help me figure how to do that? I believe it's pretty straight forward ... but I am at a loss.

After I accomplish that (with your help) I will rename the backup folder "Master Folder_bak1" & the 2nd backup folder "Master Folder_bak2" & etc.

After that, with the help of Goodsync, when I backup the pictures Goodsync will only change the backup folder with the changes that were made to the original Master Folder if I added any new pictures to the original folder and backups will take less time.

Will do something similar with data files & c drive images. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lightroom doesn't care what you name a volume. It only knows it as G:. A folder in the G: volume would have the path G:\master_file_folder\..., regardless of the name of the volume. That is, it wouldn't be G:SomeName\master_file_folder\...

To say the same thing another way; Windows doesn't include the volume name in any path information, only the volume letter.

If you want to rename the volume, I suggest Master_Volume or perhaps simply Master. I would not name a volume Master_Folder.

So Canon and Nikon each have a solution that goes against the mantra of ETTR. Active D-lighting, Highlight Tone Priority and Sony's Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) expose slightly to the left to protect the highlights. ....

A large part of the disagreement and confusion concerning ETTR comes from the way concepts are expressed.

These two statements are well understood:
The concept of ETTR says that the largest tonal graduations results from exposing as high as possible, but still protecting the highlights.
Whatever the scene has for highlights, then you (or the camera) should set the exposure to put these at the high end of (but not beyond) the sensor's range.

However, the consequences are sometimes misrepresented:
If the scene has some abnormally bright highlights, then mid-tones will be exposed less than the meter would indicate. This is still ETTR!

A white bird against a dark background, exposed for the bird, is ETTR. Note: "exposed for the bird" means setting the exposure to put it at the high end of (but not beyond) the sensor's range.
Some might call this ETTL (expose to the left), but it's not.

I have some Kodak paper that I don't use for anything worthwhile. I have tried to get ICC Profiles and no one there seems to know what I'm talking about. I've tried, over a period of several months, and several sources within Kodak, to get a profile for Kodak Matte Photo Paper, green label, without success. I've given up.

We all have a methodology that we use, wether it's simple or complex probably depends on our level of skill or possibly our chosen subject matter.
I know a picture is with a thousand words, but Part 1 is not so much about the images themselves as how we go about setting up the conscious part or and actual physical approach in the field or studio.
I know some shoot many types of genres, if you want to describe more than one, do each in a separate post so we can keep it understandable and straight, especially to those that are less experienced.
This is an opportunity to learn how both new and advanced photographers interact with their chosen subject. If you have time to plan your shot, what is it that you look for and how do you go about it, etc.
Part 2, after part 1 peters out will be more about the actual image and deconstructing what actually went into those images, both consciously and physically.
I'll post mine subsequently. This should be a fun departure!!! LoL

SS,
The term should method instead of methodology. Methodology is the study of methods.

I would like to copy all files I have on several hard drives including the one in my computer to a 5 gb. hard drive I recently purchased. Is there a program that could file all these photos chronologically based on the EXIF data? I would like a complete list of photos arranged by the date taken, not by when they were downloaded or when they were last altered.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
The suggestions already posted may work, but I think that the simplest solution is:

1) Use PhotoMove to move or copy several folders of photos to a single directory, with a structure by date.
example: Pictures/2016/2016-10/2016-10-14/IMG_0163.CR2
This uses the Date Taken. Watch out for any photos that have been edited or converted to an different format and have lost the Date Taken info.
http://www.mjbpix.com/automatically-move-photos-to-directories-or-folders-based-on-exif-date/

2) Take a reasonably sized group of folders to find and delete duplicates. This program looks at the contents only, not the names. The contents must be identical.
http://www.bigbangenterprises.de/en/doublekiller/

3) There will still be some photos that are not quite exactly dupes. This will find them. Sort by percent alike, starting with 100% and work down
http://www.duplicate-finder.com/photo.html

4) Name each of the lowest level folders (those that contain photos) according to the contents. that is, 2016-10-14 becomes 2016-10-14 Fall Party.

5) Rename the photos to suit your own taste. My favorite is to name the photos according to the folder name. That is, in the example above, IMG_0163.CR2 becomes 2016-10-14 Fall Party 001.CR2
There may be a program to rename according to the folder, but I don't know what it is. I wrote one that you may be interested in. If so, PM me.

Good luck.

FUDGE!

Sheesh...!!!

At this very moment I envision the "...big brown truck..." pulling into my driveway to deliver what could only be my trophy for having exceeded all previously known records for, and examples of a ridiculously extended duration of blyth obliviousness to such a weird and non-sensical, illogical gaffe! I have to wonder if an entry, in my name, has been submitted for next year's contest. (My wife says it's likely!)

And I suspect that a brown truck is also on its way to you, Gary, bearing a richly deserved award for polite consideration in abjuring use of such terms as " stupid idjit" and "ignorant dolt" in the course of trying to draw my attention, politely, to the ludicrousitude* of my lapse of logic.

Thank you, Gary; you are, indeed, a gentleman and a credit to those who raised you! I can think of a few who would delight in pilloring someone for such a blatant error.

So let's keep this just among the two of us....O.K.?

Best regards to a patient gentleman,
