I'll try to remember to take a photo of such a setup the next time I am out of the country.

On my travels, some hotels that allow internet access have their hard drives hidden and not accessible to guests, so you cannot depend on hotels for downloading your photos to a portable drive.

I recently bought a Digital Foci Photo Safe II PST-251 500 GB Digital Picture Storage to use on my next trip. The dimensions are 4.6" x 3" x 0.8", so it is about the size of a passport-type portable hard drive. I will use it duplicate my photos and video, and keep the originals on the SD cards, which I will bring plenty of so I have no concerns of running out of storage.

Then, all I'll need is to bring a lightweight tablet for internet access.

I got it yesterday from Amazon ($149.95), and tonight uploaded jpeg and RAW photos, and video (.mov extension -- Canon's movie files), and after hooking it up to my computer via the provided USB, saw that all the files from the SD card were flawlessly copied. I gave this product five stars on Amazon.

Just plug in your card reader into one USB port, the tablet into another USB port, and use Explorer to copy/paste the images from the card to the tablet. You'll be bypassing the computer's hard drive.

What I was referring to was that all you'd see at some hotels would be a monitor and keyboard. No other hardware in sight. I believe hotels are doing this more and more often so that guests cannot (either accidentally or intentionally) erase software in the hotel's computer, or introducing viruses to it, when using a USB connection. So therefore, there is no usb connection available to hook up a tablet to.

Everything you need to start shooting!

Canon Rebel T2i body
Tamron 70-300 mm, f/4-5.6, VC, USD zoom, with Hoya Pro Digital UV filter
Canon EF 35-105 mm, f/3.5-4.5 AF lens
Tamron 1.4x AF Tele-converter
Brand new Dolica SB Series Sling bag
Third party battery pack
Battery charger with cord
Polaroid 8 Gb SD card, class 4
OwnerÂ’s manuals (English and Spanish)
CDs for the Instruction Manual and EOS Digital Solution Disk
Original box and packing for the T2i and Tamron zoom

I take great pride in the care of my camera equipment. The T2i body only has a few cosmetic blemishes that do not affect the functioning of the camera in any way:

1. The rubber grip had partially separated from the body, so I superglued it back in place.
2. The perimeter of the LCD has remnants of glue along the outer edge from a loupe attachment that I had previously used. The adhesive does not affect the viewing area of the LCD.
3. A portion of the painted symbols for the shooting mode and timer to the left of the Set Button was removed while taking off the adhesive along the perimeter of the LCD.
4. The bottom right corner of the LCD shows a small blemish that is only apparent when the LCD is not on. When the LCD is lit, this blemish is not apparent. The LCD has a few, very, very light scratches that are practically indiscernible and have absolutely no detrimental effect when viewing information, photos and video on the LCD.

The body is totally functional, and has not had any issues since I first bought it new. The shutter actuation count as of this ad posting is 41,959. The generally agreed upon shutter life for the T2i is 100,000 actuations, so this baby has a long way to go!

The Tamron zoom is in near perfect cosmetic and function condition.

The Canon zoom is in nearly mint condition.

The 1.4 tele-converter is in mint condition, as it was hardly used.

Why am I selling this loaded kit for such a low price? I recently bought a Canon 70D, and I already have a Rebel T4i as a backup. Also, I recently got a Sigma 50-500 mm super-telephoto, which makes my Tamron redundant, and also makes having a 1.4x tele-converter unnecessary. Compare my kit price with the T2i body, the Tamron 70-300 mm, and the Tamron tele-converter, when priced separately on eBay. This is a GREAT bargain, not even including all the extras that are part of this kit. This would make a terrific gift for a budding photographer, or a tremendous backup for an existing Rebel system.

CJ,

I'll email the photo of the printer box to your email address Saturday after I return from LA. In the mean time, get an idea of how much it would cost to mail it to you. It is rather heavy, so I don't want you to get sticker shock!

CJsFotos and others,

I have a Canon Pixma Pro 10 that arrived in the mail this week as part of a package deal for my Canon 70D. It is still in the Canon box, and can be had for for $198, but will not include shipping. I am currently in LA visiting my newly-born grandson, and will return home Saturday. You can post a reply if interested. I will do the sale thru PayPal. I can post a photo of the box this weekend if anyone is interested.

thanks,

I agree with not fiddling with the cloud! Using Eye-Fi as I described goes directly from the Eye-Fi card to an Eye-Fi app on your phone...nowhere else. I'm sure you can set up the 70D to work that way as well. :)

DI Seller,

I'm one of those "dinosaurs" that still has a dumb phone, so using Wifi in that application is at least a year away. But when tablets under $200 start to have SD slots instead of micros, I can duplicate photos and video that way, too. I'm tired of lugging around my laptop just to duplicate photos, and on many of my kinds of trips, I cannot assume that the hotels will have computers to download to a mini hard drive.

Have you given any consideration to an Eye-fi card?

DI Seller,

The Canon 70D has wifi. I want to keep things simple and just have a basic backup to my SD cards while on vacation without having to lug around my laptop. Also, I don't want to fiddle with The Cloud.

Looking further, this unit does not have outstanding reviews on Amazon.... so still searching for a good answer. Still might just bring extra memory cards and use a small tablet to copy and paste to create a second copy of each card. Another option is the Seagate Wireless Backup drive - it can receive and store files over its own wireless network - so could probably download from a tablet or even from one of the new DSLRs with wireless capability. Still have to consider whether this is a much better option than just deciding to bring the laptop along!

Nikonian gave it five stars, so worth considering

Best stand-alone media storage device, for the price, that I have reviewed yet.

A.J.,

The 7D will probably be replaced soon by an upgraded model, since it is 4 years old. The 70D has superior video, which I will find useful when I get to visit with my newly born grandson.

FPS is not that big a game changer for me, since most of my photos involve landscapes and plants. I'm not into sports photography, and the faster FPS would only be marginally better form shooting birds in flight, which I don't do enough to warrant choosing a camera based on that criterion.

St3v3M,

Great comparison! The lesser shutter lag, better focusing in difficult situations, and faster focusing of the 70D makes it more appropriate for shooting birds in tough lighting situations. Also, being weather sealed is a great advantage in rain forests.

I had to chuckle, though, when I read that one advantage of the T4i was that it was "Slightly cheaper". Being almost half the price of a 70D can hardly be thought as a minor difference.

I do a lot of nature photography in forested conditions (plant life, birding), and recently got a Bigma 50-500. With slower lenses, especially super telephotos, high ISOs and faster shutter speeds are a must with APS-C sensors. I don't want to upgrade to a full-frame because they are just too big and heavy for me. I would like to know if the subject upgrade is worth the cost for the incremental increase in subject sharpness. Thanks.
