Personally I love it the way it is and would be afraid that any 'tampering' in post would lose the wonderful mood of the shot.

I agree with Fullframe - print it out 4x6 or even 5x7 and see how it looks ... but were it mine I'd just enjoy a fantastic photo of my son.

Tom

Thanks

That's really good   You could bring it into post and try a stop or two of exposure to lighten it up, but then maybe you loose the mood. It's quite wonderful the way it is tbh.

Thank you

Well, I personally think this is a superb shot.
It's really wonderful . ..and soulful. . .his face says so much, and yet is so calm.

If you wanted to really nitpick and make this even better, then check out the highlights on the ear. They stand out more than the face, so you could subdue them a touch. Same thing goes for the whitest whites on the T-shirt, but honestly, this is a lovely shot, and I would be proud to make a large print of it if I were you.

Thank you

My model is my son. We went to a near by church and decided to take some photos. I'm still trying to understand lighting and B/W. Any CC are always welcome.

I see that you post a lot of portraits. Did you know that there is a people gallery on UHH too that is dedicated specially to people and portraits. There are a bunch of good guys in that forum that offer some great tips.

Thank you, I will try to look for it.

If you use lightroom the nik silver effects is a very good program to convert with. These look nice. I especially love the first one.

Nik silver effects for Lightroom? I thought it was only for photoshop.

You've got the tone!! Excellent b&w!! You can do in-camera adjustments in your settings (user manual); look for "B&W" or "Monochrome" - follow some of the links below from the Hog. Ton of info available.

I really like them. I wouldn't consider the 3rd to be over exposed, I would just tone down the highlights only. If you take the whole exposure down, it will not look nearly as nice.

All in all, I can see why they loved the photos. You have a future in wedding photography. (if you ever wanted to go down that path)

There are a lot of similarities between prom and wedding photos. Check out the wedding photography section. Lots of good folks there with a lot of experience in taking this exact type of photos.
