I was told in a photography class to keep the original photos on the memory card and store it as a safety precaution after downloading them to my computer. Does anyone do this? Is it a good idea or just an expensive idea? :|

are you just going to keep buying memory cards to keep shooting.

Is there any preference for a good 4-way rail for a Nikon ?

Do all rails mount on a tripod in the same way a camera might and then the camera on top of the rail ?

Any other special parts needed ?

adorama sells a 4-way no other parts needed

any thoughts on formattin my card every time I daowload to my computer

Total waste of time. I hardly ever format cards. Maybe after one has been laying around for several months and I don't remember what camera it was in last, I will make sure all photos have been saved to computer then format it before putting it in my camera or bag.

For that matter, I've accidentally used the same SD card in a Canon P&S, Panasonic Lumix bridge camera, and Sony Alpha 55 dSLR without formatting it and the cameras don't seem to mind my blunder. They just add a sub-directory of their own choosing to store photos in and go on without a complaint.

I really love taking pictures and love all the topics on this site, but I sometimes don't have a clue what is being discussed, not knowing the acronyms, lingo, and, such.
Took a short course at Adult Learning Center but, mainly worked on Photoshop, anyways we have a 2 year course at Community Collage but, not sure about going to school for 2 yrs. I am 46 and don't plan on a career in Photography, just want to really learn it very well. Do you have any suggestions? I do better in a classroom setting verses online, and live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Would consider online or a book if its user friendly.

Canon EF 135mm f/2.8 Soft focus Exc+ is what it says. I'd like to have a 135 prime but I'm only finding the 2.0 for around $1000 and the 2.8 for $400. But the 2.8 all say soft focus. Not what I was wanting...

Thanks Snowbear!

that lens uses a disks for doing soft focus but will also not soft focus if you dont want it to, best to go to a camera store and see for yourself

Hi all....... I shoot 99% of my pix in RAW.
Transferring (RAW) from Canon's Digital Photo Professional to Picasa (JPEG) literally takes HOURS!!
Is there a faster way?
Thanks

batch process your raw files in DPP and convert them to jpg then open them in Picasa v3 or open raw files in picasa I dont know what your doing but I use picasa and havent had any problems either way. When you first downloaded picasa did you tell picasa to just look in my pictures folder or did you just say search which picassa will do and take any pic from all over your hard drive (HD) and create a folder for each pic you have on HD, anything from any games you have. Such a mess that way

I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately. Unfortunately, it's caused a problem this morning.

I go to the San Diego Zoo once a week, and that was this morning.

I usually shoot RAW + JPG although I've never done anything with the RAW other than summarily delete them.

I accidentally had my Canon 550D set for RAW only this morning and came home with 158 pictures from a two-hour trip.

I tried opening all of them in Corel PaintShop Pro X4. It crashed.

I tried opening all of them in Photoshop CS5.1. It crashed.

I downloaded Photoshop CS6 Beta and tried opening all of them there. It crashed.

I was able to open all of them very easily in Lightroom 4 and easily export them as JPGs in a batch export process. Took a while though. Certainly says a lot for taking RAW + JPG out in the field.

Anyone else doing something unique or is this just an anomaly that I created for myself this morning?

Sounds like you should set your camea to largest jpg files if you just delete the raw files after loading them onto your computer, seems like a waste of memory card space..as for all your other photo software crashing dont have a clue....

I got up this morning to a gorgeous foggy sunrise. I grabbed my camera and raced outside and snapped a couple in auto then switched to Manual without remembering I had been reading my Magic lantern book with camera in hand switching settings and taking test pictures. I inadvertently left the iso set to 3200. I shot blissfully unaware until I had them uploaded onto my computer. What a mess. There is no fixing that much noise. To make matters worst I also had forgotten I had switched to RAW. My poor old computer about had a coronary trying to handle those huge files and me with nothing that can process raw.
Well it is a great comparison of what a difference the iso setting can make.

try picassa (free) will handle raw files. if you have nothing that processes raw how did you handle this?

ok I'm posting a picture of the setup and a pic I took I saw a tutorial on this and did it the same way and my photo is totally underexposed . How can she not be lighted when the two umbrellas are right in her face????? I was just practicing the setup so she's not made up at all Hopefully the pictures upload

at what shutter speed were you trying I dont know about nikons but canons sync at 1/250 or lower for small flashes but at a lower sync speed for studio strobes 1/125 or lower check camera manual. If all else fails try using various shutter speeds from 1/250 to 1/60 to see when strobes are fireing...

I have a question in reguards to shooting remote flash attached to umbrella. I have to admit my biggest weakness is low light photograghy and I am allways trying different ways of improving. I use a nikon D7000 with a SB900 attached to the hot shoe and had a SB600 attached to a stand and silver lined umbrella, set off to give a different flash no more than 50' at any given time. I was shooting in a ball room low light with about 20' white ceiling and off white walls. The remote flash did not work unless I was within a foot of the remote flash. I have used the set up before without the umbrella and it works fine. Could the silver linning be causing the units not to comunicate with each other? Thanks, LU10IT

best bet is to mount the flash for the umbrella so the red part is toward you and swivel the head to the umbrella. when using infared it must have some line of site from camera mounted flash and umbrella mounted flash they have to see each other in order to fire. Set umbrella flash SB600 to slave...SB900 set to comander mode.

That is an F8 preset lens, unless I miss my guess. That means there is NO mechanism in it. You focus and then you can set the aperture manually. I used to have both a 400mm F6.3 and a 500mm F8. Spent less than $50 for both of them combined. They were sharp but not technically telephotos as they only had like 4 elements each. True telephotos are actually physically shorter than their focal length. They were both fun to use, if a bit ungainly.

anything over 100mm is a telephoto just because it has only 4 elements it is still a telephoto lens...what else would you call it a wide angle or normal lens...
