I really love taking pictures and love all the topics on this site, but I sometimes don't have a clue what is being discussed, not knowing the acronyms, lingo, and, such.
Took a short course at Adult Learning Center but, mainly worked on Photoshop, anyways we have a 2 year course at Community Collage but, not sure about going to school for 2 yrs. I am 46 and don't plan on a career in Photography, just want to really learn it very well. Do you have any suggestions? I do better in a classroom setting verses online, and live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Would consider online or a book if its user friendly.

I would do a couple of things.
1.) I would ask questions here when you don't get what's being said (acronyms)
2.) I would buy Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure" it's cheap especially used but a very good book.
3.) I would try one of the instruction sites available. I'm sure that others know the web addresses; they are reasonably priced and a good way to get started.
see if you have a camera club in your area can be of help
welcome... just through some pictures out there. thats how it all begins. njoy an have fun
I had the same problem as Suzi so I clicked on the UHH pg. you showed and printed it. Thank You. Should be a big help.

Also if you are really interested in learning about photography and your camera you could take the intro course NYIP offers. Compared to a college course it is relatively the same price and you can do it on your own time, but it is more expensive than anything you can find for free on the interent.
Also HP's web site has a long list of photo and computer related courses and they are free. I believe it's called HP Learning Center. Worth a look.

Try this out. I've taken a couple of classes. they are only 6 weeks (two classes per week) but very informative.
