I just received my used purchase of a 500mm teelphoto lens for my Sony a350 and the lens is in really good condition. I did finally figure out that the camera would need to operate as manual, as well as, manual focus, however pictures taken are black. I see the image clearly in the lens but again, the outcome is a black picture. Are there any Sony Alpha users out there that could offer assistance?

Really? F1.8? That aperature would have to open 278mm. The lens barrel would be huge? I'd like to see that lens.

It's 1.8 of what? Sorry, I'm not understanding. Is there a link on the web that we can take a peek at? I'd love to see what you are talking about. I'm not trying to be difficult, just need a little clarification is all.

If you're right, that looks like a purely mechanical lens without any electronics. I am not familiar with the Sony camera body but it looks like it would have to be a 35mm film body for it to work.

edit: I just found one on eBay and see that it is a digital body but my only guess is that it will be mechanical focus, and that since it's an f8 lens (slow) you will need to use a rather slow shutter. I bet you'll need to slow the shutter at least 2 stops because of the doubler.

Hmmmm...Did you need to get an adaptor for this lens to connect to the A380? Did you switch to manual focus on the camera body? Another consideration is that at 500mm it needs a lot of light, this might require raising ISO to 800 area.
I think it is unusual to find a Minolta lens at $70, I am thinking there has to be other markings on it (MC, MD, AF). Also it sounds like it is a slow lens, meaning you should leave the shutter open longer.
These are just some thoughts that occured to me. Let us know what you find as the issue.

Sony used to have a 500mm f8 (fixed) mirror reflex lens. I have one and it is truly and amazing. This isn't my best moon shot. Can't find that one right now! Isn't it always so!

Is this your lens? Then it is an f/8, not f/1.8, nor 1.8 anything. f/8 means that the diameter of the lens diaphragm (aperture) is 1/8 the focal length of lens (1:8 ratio). Your 500-mm lens has a 62-mm (diameter) aperture, and requires LOTS of light. Start at ISO 400, and bracket your shutter duration until you get a good start setting for daylight exposures at different apertures.

Yes that looks like the lens. I didn't want a new one until I was understanding how to use it. From all the feedback I'm thinking when I do get a different one, it would be best to get the auto/manual.

Thanks everyone for your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

There is nothing wrong with shooting manual. It is actually the best way to learn true photographic principles. You will need a sturdy tripod to support large lens & camera. A bright, sunny day will provide the light you need to take decent photos at 1/500-sec. (maximum shutter duration for long lens) at f/11 and ISO 400.

That is an F8 preset lens, unless I miss my guess. That means there is NO mechanism in it. You focus and then you can set the aperture manually. I used to have both a 400mm F6.3 and a 500mm F8. Spent less than $50 for both of them combined. They were sharp but not technically telephotos as they only had like 4 elements each. True telephotos are actually physically shorter than their focal length. They were both fun to use, if a bit ungainly.
