Luckily, I had bought "Apple Care" a few months prior. When I walked into the store, they never even asked me about what kind of protection plan I had. They told me they fix problems like this for free, and did.
Worse case, perhaps you can save all your critical files, such as photos onto an external drive. You could then purge your drive, reinstall your OS and applications.
I use Aperture and keep my photos on a 1TB external HD attached with Velcro to the lid of my computer. I use time machine to backup EVERYTHING in the background over my LAN to my 3TB Airport Time Capsule. If I think something is wrong I can go back in time to a place where I'm confident my computer was working properly. I takes almost a full day to recover wirelessly, but it can be done and I have done it.
NEVER agree to download a new program from a POP-UP screen. Go to the site yourself, make sure you know where you are, prior to downloading a program. These days clever hackers can forge a page very convincingly. Once you download one piece of Mal Ware it lead to very bad problems (like you are experiencing now) If you do search on line you will find places that promise to remove the Mal Ware for free, only to introduce more such viruses!

I went on the forums of adobe and a guy suggested I download Adwaremedic from the safemac and it got rid of the problem straight away. He said it was adware, which is mainly annoying popups and control of the system that would be the problem and it turned out he was right... Cheers
