My macbook pro has malware I think. In safari I will go to a site and another site will come up, I will delete that and my site will be there. Even in email i cannot click on a link. If Im on facebook for eg I will click on a link and will go to mackeeper.com or some stupid site for a game. It will not do it all the time though just when it feels like it. Also sometimes when I use safari once then click on the safari icon at the bottom again I have to quit it before I can use it. I tried upgrading to mavericks but it didn't fix the problem. I dont want to have to delete the hardrive if I can help it.
I think its pointless upgrading to yosemite if mavericks didnt do it. Id appreciate it if anyones got any suggestions?

You can try this:
>Launchpad, >other, >disc utility. Highlight Macintosh HD (it might the sub drive also under the same drive, and then repair disc permissions under the first aid tab. I do this on a weekly basis.

You might want to look at moving from Safari to Firefox or Chrome, see if the issue goes away. If all the issues involve using Safari, perhaps Safari is the problem.

I myself switched to Chrome. Your mileage may vary though ;)

Have you reset Safari and do you have an unusual browser shown in the search engine drop down list ( safari > preferences > general ) ?

One thing you might want to check for is a DNS issue - which could cause the symptoms you talk about across all browsers. Make sure that the DNS setting points to the correct DNS server you want, or try replacing the DNS setting with 8.8.8.8 to use Google's DNS at:

http://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Or Open DNS at:

http://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/opendns-ip-addresses/

Well, I wasn't having problems with malware like the OP but I clicked on your links and read through them. So I gave it a try and and changed my DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4. What a difference in loading websites!!! Much, much faster! Thank you for these links!

One google search for mackeeper came up with this:

Quote:
Many users will see references to an application called MacKeeper on various web sites and via pop-ups on their browser. Not only is it expensive for what it purports to do (freeware applications that do the same or more are readily available), it can sometimes install itself without the user realising it, and it can be very tricky to get rid of.

MacKeeper has been described by various sources as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system, adding that it is unethically marketed, with a history of making false advertising claims, by a company called Zeobit, and a rip-off.

I just recovered from the same problems. Hot foot it over to the Apple store after you make an appointment at the genus bar. They are very familiar with the problem(s) (Mal Ware and viruses.) It took me two trips to get my Mac Book Pro cleaned up. The thing really flies now. It's about a 30 minute trip each way for me to reach the Apple store. It was well worth the two round trips.

Stop downloaded recommended programs that claim to rid the computer of specific Mal Ware . These are scams and introduce more Mal Ware! I got duped into thinking I was talking to an Apple help desk. He had an Indian accent and asked for permission to take remote control of my computer and for only $500 USD he would keep my computer clear of viruses and Mal Ware. I finally realized I was being scammed and hung up. When I got to the Apple store they had heard it all before. I dodged a bullet.

Apple provides this support FREE. This is one of the advantages of owning an Apple computer.

Can you contact Apple on-line? Make sure it is Apple you are talking to. They work with you to solve the problems.
