Hi to All:

My 9.5 year old 21 inch Apple desktop is showing signs of aging and is no longer supported by Apple help. I believe it is time to get another current one. One thought I have is to get an Apple Mini with maximum ram and hard drive--they show a couple of options on the Apple site. I already have the mouse and keyboard for my current desktop. The price for the fully decked out mini is about the same as for a 21.5 inch desktop.

I am asking for advice as to whether this is a sensible solution for a little less money. I know I will have to purchase another screen, one that will allow for good photo processing. Has anyone have thought about this, has anyone done this, are you happy with your decision?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Wavedancer65:

If you will be doing lots of art photography you may be interested in the book--"How to Photograph Works of Art" by Sheldan Collins, published by Amphoto/Watson Guptill. It is an older book but has the information you need to photograph all types of art. You will probably find this in used book stores or perhaps at Amazon. I do not know if it is still in print.

Good luck

Joe

Thanks to all who replied to my upgrade question. Lots of points to consider and I will do some research on the issue. I appreciate the quick response. UHH is certainly a valuable service and the people on the site are most helpful. Once again my deepest appreciation for the help.

I currently use a 21 inch I-Mac desktop running the Sierra OS. The computer was made in late 2009-early 2010. I have many programs from that time period and more recent ones such as PS Elements 15, Lightroom 5.5, Picasa, Canon DPP 4, etc. This system is running fine and does what I want it to do.

My question: Is it worth upgrading to High Sierra and how will this new upgrade affect my older software? Has anyone done the upgrade on an older computer and were there any issues. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Hi ED:
I was there last Tuesday for a couple of hours. The ponds are fairly low and all I saw were stilts, avocets, pelicans, shoveler and a few other ducks. However every day is different. The lens I used was a Canon 70-300, hand held on my 50D which did ok for me. If I wanted to carry my tripod, I would have used my larger, heavier, Canon 100-400 lens. The trails are all good and flat and easy walking. Good luck on your visit.

Hi:
I believe that Photo Bert puts out a series of plastic laminated "cheat sheets" for a number of cameras. You can do a google search and find out about him. Good luck!!

Hello all. I have been following for awhile but this is my first post. Very new to photography. I have a Canon 80D and just acquired a Canon EF 100-400 mm IS II. I have varied interests, but birds and wildlife are my biggest. Having trouble with ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Any chance there are cheat sheets for basic setting situations i.e. perched bird at a distance on a sunny day? Just some general settings to help get me started? Thanks.

If your software has the option of showing you which focusing spot was used for the photo, turn it on and see where the camera focused at the time the shutter clicked. I have had the case where the focusing spot moved off my subject at the time of shutter release and focused on something either behind or in front of the subject. May be a clue.

If your camera/software has the option of displaying which focusing point was used when the picture was taken, it may help you know where the main focus was or if it was moved from where you intended it to focus when you clicked the shutter. My 2 cents! Good luck.

My apologies for mixing both Sierra and Safari in the same question, my bad. Thanks for the responses. I will try and find some solution for my needs.

I really did mean Sierra!

Thanks Kissel, however I indicated I am using Sierra, which is the MAC operating system. You are correct about Safari being a browser but this was not my question. I appreciate your interest in my question.

I am using a desktop MAC and Sierra. Yesterday I went to use Picasa after a long hiatus. I tried to send the JPEG photo using the e-mail feature at the bottom of the Picasa screen to my self as a test. I did receive an e-mail indicating that a photo was sent to me but there was no photo. I tried this several times with the same results. Since Picasa is an older program I was wondering if there is a compatibility issue with Safari and Picasa. Any thoughts or suggestions as to how I can send a photo using Picasa. Thanks in advance for any forthcoming help or suggestions.

I have a Mac Book Pro Retina that is a few years old (about 4). Within the last month I have had a strange situation happen. When I boot up the computer the clock and date are no where near what the actual date/time should be. It happened the first time about a month ago. Then last night and again today. No one else has access to this computer. Going into the time/calender section and unlocking it immediately corrects by itself and everything goes back to normal.

Any ideas what is wrong or what I can do to fix it? Is this the beginning of the end for this computer?

Hi:

Did you know that phone support for Apple is now a free service. I have used it several times for my desktop and I-Pad. You may want to give them a call with this clock/date issue. Their number is 1-800-275-2273.

Good Luck.

Maschoos:

If you are planning to do a lot of art work photography, I can suggest a book that I use when I did art work photography, mostly oil paintings. I did use the double polarizer technique on the flashes and on the camera to cut the reflections from the lights on the oil paints.

The book is titled "How To Photograph Works of Art" by Sheldan Collins. It is published by Amphoto/Watson-Guptil Publications with a publication year of 1992.

Good luck on your endeavors.

Bob: Your dog portraits are outstanding. I also love dogs and have owned a Golden Retriever, Samoyed and Puli. Never could get photos like yours. Question-are the backgrounds done with Smart Photo Editor? If not, would you please let us know how you did the backgrounds. Thanks and have a great new year and good luck with you ventures at the dog show.
