I currently use a 21 inch I-Mac desktop running the Sierra OS. The computer was made in late 2009-early 2010. I have many programs from that time period and more recent ones such as PS Elements 15, Lightroom 5.5, Picasa, Canon DPP 4, etc. This system is running fine and does what I want it to do.

My question: Is it worth upgrading to High Sierra and how will this new upgrade affect my older software? Has anyone done the upgrade on an older computer and were there any issues. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Joe

I suspect most if not all your favorite applications are of 32-bit architecture. Check to see if High Sierra accomodates 32-bit. I think I read somewhere that the next MacOS will be exclusively 64-bit. When software is written it uses a particular 'word' size. What happens is a 64-bit architecture, upon introduction, recognizes 32-bit architecture, but at a slower speed. Each 32-bit command word must be converted to a 64-bit word for the processor, and the 64-bit pricessor output must be converted to 32-bit for the software. I renember from the days of 16-bit to 32-bit conversion how slowly me apps worked. Even keyboard ops were sluggish. At my stage in life I expect I'll stay with what I have. i haven't opened Photoshop CS4 in ages. The amount of photographer I can do is tiny compared to years ago. Sigh.

I upgraded a 2012 iMac core i7, 64bit, 32Ram, custom configured for me originally to High Sierra last week. When I tried installing a couple of 32bit programs the system informed me the software was not optimized for High Sierra. And would not install. Otherwise the new OS works great on my system.

I just went from Snow Leopard on a 12 year old iMac to High Sierra on a new 27" Mac. Nothing was compatible but the improvment was well worth the price. I now have Photoshop and Lightroom for $9.99 a month which includes all the updates. The speed is amazing and I love PhotoshopCC.
If you can afford it.....do it! I have a friend that did it on the cheap. He got an iBook and via an HDMI cable attached it to a 40" Sony flatscreen. He needed an adapter for the laptop. Just an idea.

I updated my MacBook pro. And all I can say is the photo editing program was really enhanced.

I upgraded to High Sierra and it shuffled all my photos in Photos from one album to another -- a real mess.

I attempted to put High Sierra on a 2011 iMac---27 inch with close to 2 TB free---also tried to up grade to the latest LR/C photoshop rental deal---

crashed the computer

I ended up buying a new 2018 iMac---and did loose some photo aps---- sadly....... It you do this Back up on an external HD and realize that some of the older bits of software will not run on the newer computers---
Also-- I had to upgrade printer and scanner software and purchase several new cables-- and re install internet service and rejoin some web sites, inc. Ugly Hedgehog. This took many days of fiddling around and loss of productivity--

The new computer is lovely---but the learning curve took some time and a few phone calls---

I have a late-2010 iMac, and have upgraded it to High Sierra. I didn’t notice any problems. It worked fine before, but I decided to stay current.

I have a mid 2011 iMac 27” and upgraded to High Sierra as soon as it came out. No problems at all.

Having said that, I like to keep all my operating systems and programs up to date. I feel safer with the latest security updates and appreciate the upgrades.

If your system does what you want and you are happy, WHY upgrade ? If it ain't broke, don't fix it....

Likely some issues will arise, however, the pleasure of using the new OS, opportunity for new software functionality, and security improvements should outweigh the obvious. Good luck!

I have upgraded to High Sierra on two Macbook Pros (circa 2012) and a iMac 4K.
Works great with all previously loaded software.
Just do it - you'll love the results

The way I see this you have two choices moving forward. The first involves not upgrading anything and remaining where you are today. Sooner or later that will lead to a host of problems where you hardware and software will just quit working. Technology requires keeping up because it changes so rapidly. Computers don't last forever, and neither does software, unless upgraded. If I can get 5 years from a decent computer I'm very happy. Sometimes more, sometimes not. Whenever I bring on a new machine I'm always amazed at how much better and faster things work. Best of luck.

If you are using Sierra most things will remain unchanged in High Sierra. Here is a link to the comparison and what to expect:
https://www.macworld.co.uk/review/mac-software/macos-high-sierra-vs-macos-sierra-3660082/

https://www.roaringapps.com has an extensive compatibility catalog where you can look up most apps and find out which OS they are/aren't compatible with and what problems others have had

I bought a factory refurbished iMac 24" in 2010 and ran Mountain Lion until early last December. Installing High Sierra was a snap and I lost no programs. There were no problems with any of my post processing programs and all is well.
