Hi Andrew,

I have recently acquired a Canon 6D and have began testing using HDR. So far I found the in-camera HDR works well. I've also taken several exposures and used external software with varying results. But now I just shoot in RAW and post process to improve the dynamic range. Sort of like burning and dodging in the darkroom.

Regarding your photo, I am drawn to the top of the dark gray building on the left. Some additional post processing there might be an improvement.

I do my own tests. That way I can only argue with myself.

Back when I shot film I used a spot meter and metered off my hand with the angle of the sun the same as on the subject. I just recently started with digital and usually use the same technique. And I usually set the camera to manual so I have complete control of all the parameters.

As I have recently started with digital I am still testing and experimenting.
I have used auto when in a hurry and was not disappointed.

For this particular photo where the highlight is so strong I would have metered on the bright part of the bird and set the exposure about 3 stops from an 18% grey card (Zone V), or I would have metered off my hand which is zone VI (one stop brighter than an 18% grey card).

Surprised I'm not the only one using the meter off the hand trick.

I may not be the best person to take advice from as I am new to digital photography.

I loved the years I spent with film and darkroom-
and the knowledge derived from it.

Now I have a full frame digital camera and will never go back

Original----

Very good BW photograph!!

The cropped looks like a panorama which
IMHO it is not.

I'm certainly not saying the cropped is bad.

I use picasa for a website storage just for showing my pictures. I use other editing software, have already saved the originals, off the computer, and haven't encountered a problem. Are you-all talking about using picasa as an editing tool? This is concerning to me.

I use it for "mild" editing- Mostly cropping and white balance. Don't do much editing on my photos. I also print from Picasa.

Yep,

Picasa is an OK program- But it does search your entire computer and load all your images when first installed. Not a problem if you don't have a lot of
images.

Picasa should ask before doing that. Don't know why it doesn't.

If you have lots of pictures and don't want them all loaded, then don't install Picasa.

Hi Kuzano,

As far as scanning is concerned I am wet chemistry. In fact my current film processing chemicals are Folgers Instant Coffee, Vitamin C (crushed) and Washing Soda. The process is called Caffenol... very popular niche market. You can process both film AND prints using Caffenol processing.

Is this a joke? Is this for Tri-X? Does it really work? Does Photographers Formulary have it? Never mind, I Googled it and it's for real!!!! I may have to break out my 4x5 again. Does it work on fiber paper?

Hi Police340

I shoot manual all the time - But I have a spot meter.
If you want to shoot manual without a meter you need to be familiar with iso-fstop-shutter. For example the sunny16 rule is for a sunny day at f16 set your shutter speed to your iso. Read up on iso-fstop-shutter and practice. Otherwise you will have to set at least one parameter to auto.

Hi CaptainC

Thanks for the link - I downloaded it and will watch it again later using the pause button in order to properly view the photographs. I'll see if I can guess which two are yours. During the veryfast run I "thought" I saw a few photos that reminded me of scenes that were vary popular for photographers. I'll have to give those a special look when paused.

I was delighted that there was only one flower photograph in the presentation.

A beautiful child.

I had to laugh after twindad commented "Currently it looks like a mug shot" and I took second look. I think you should have them photoshopped so the backgrounds really look like police photos. If you decide to do that I think you'll have a hit.
