Shoot RAW, then you have all the options to keep color, modify the color/tone or go B&W in post. If you shoot B&W, you are limited in what you can do in post. With some cameras, like the Fuji, I will shoot B&W because I want the look I get from that camera's way of handling the tone.

Ken Rockwell is who he is, period. Take what he has to say for what it is. He tells you the web page was for his own use primarily to store info he wanted to have easy access to and nothing more. Over the years, I think, the site has evolved to what it is now. A non commercial web page for camera opinion. I have used his opinions to good effect in my first digital camera, a Canon SD800 and later the Nikon D40. Both continue to give me good service for what they were intended. I like his historical comments on the Nikon cameras and lens. I don't understand the bad mouthing of his web page or his pictures. If you don't like what he says or does, then move on. Get a life!

The quality of the images taken are quite good. Missed a number of opportunities waiting for the camera to come out of sleep mode. Not good for birds in flight or race cars at speed. AF is a bit iffy. Prefer my D500 for those situations. Seems to be more of a deliberative camera where the full frame image quality is useful rather than a carry along camera. I prefer my X-T1 for that. It's always in my kit bag but the jury is still out as to where it might fit in.

I'm interested. Has it been sold? I'm new to this form of sale so I will need to know how to link up. My personal email is whfowle@msn.com

Thanks, Andy. He did suggest ON1. I'm using the on line subscription version of Lightroom CC and it works well for me with everything I have processed so far on other cameras. I plan to take the X-T1 with me for an air show next Saturday. I'll see what happens to those pics and then decide.

Recently, I stepped into the world of Fujifilm and purchased a X-T1 with the 18-55 f2.8-4 lens. As I was checking out, the clerk asked me what post processing software I used and I told him Lightroom. He told me that Fujifilm and Lightroom didn't get along too well. This was the first I had heard of any problems like that and I've been reading posts here in UHH for several years, so I ran a search and didn't see anything to support that claim. Still, I thought I would poll the vast knowledge base here to see if anyone had any experience with this combo.

You say you already have a good photo team in place. Why not use them to document these events? Our church has several semi-pro photographers and they prepare videos all the time for display on the big screen, web and promotional DVD's. For years, they have used Canon FF dslr's with a quality mic on top. When on trips to South America and Africa, they daily download the files to their computers and use Final Cut Pro to edit the various activities into a finished product that can be viewed in a variety of ways. I'm always amazed at the quality of the output.

I have used North Coast Photographic Services for 35mm scan and return for many years. They will scan whole rolls in high res and return a CD with the film in sleeves. You get digital at about 24-25 MP.

To be sure, the main reason is cost. But that is not all. There is weight and size. I'm mostly a Nikon user so my comparisons are mostly in that line of cameras. Both the cameras and lenses are less complicated (as a whole) than full frame. Mostly, these crop sensor cameras appeal to casual users who just want something to record significant events in their lives. They don't appreciate the better quality of the full frame results since they mostly just are taking snap shots. They don't want to lug around a big bulky heavy camera. Secondly, they tend to be starter cameras as well. Some starting point that is relatively inexpensive and gives them a taste of what is possible later in their skill development. All this is not to say that there are not any serious crop sensor cameras. The Nikon D500 is an example. It is every bit as professional as any full frame camera. And it serves a professional purpose. Mainly, instant improvement in the telephoto range. Large, heavy, very expensive telephoto lenses can be offset to some degree by using a lower cost, less bulky, lighter shorter telephoto lens and using the crop factor to advantage.

If we limit the results to straight out of the camera jpegs, I would say the Canon ELPH cameras produce warmer colors than the other manufacturers. However my D40 jpegs are almost as warm. I think it was a deliberate move by the manufacturers to please snap shooters. Reminds me of the film days. I preferred Kodachrome to Ektachrome. Never did like the super blue tone of Ektachrome. I recognized that neither was natural but just a preference of mine.

First of all, welcome to UHH. Second, when I think of P&S cameras, I'm thinking very small and light. Something I will put in my pocket just like my wallet. I want something that has a lens that retracts into the body and has a built in lens shutter to protect the lens from dust and finger prints. Probably minimum features to keep the cost down and I would expect to shoot all jpeg. If I wanted features and RAW, I would be thinking a DSLR or mirrorless ILC, but that is a personal decision that I have made. Every camera maker that makes P&S cameras has a different idea about how the colors are interpreted to a jpeg and this is where it becomes a matter of personal taste. All I can recommend is that you sample as many different brands as you can and pick the one that produces the most pleasing colors to you. Many of my fellow hoggers have offered good advice and you should use all of it in making a decision.

Several years ago, I spent a day shooting Sky City in New Mexico. I was using Velvia 50 and I send the rolls to North Coast Photographic Services. They are a mail order outfit that ships all over the world. They offer three levels of scanning. I was very pleased with their product. You get your film back and a disc with all the pictures. You can make your own prints from the disc or let them print.

If I understand the choice you are facing, it seems to me the best solution would be to keep the 5200 for other family members to use and then buy whichever camera you want to use. I think also that you would find the 7500 easier to transition to than the 500.
