I don't want to buy another computer, either. That's why I boot this Mac beast in Yose, ElCap, or Win10 as wanted. I tried Sierra- and yeah, some things seemed snappy, some just slogged. Yose runs well for me. For less than the price of one lens I have a new enough computer.
Ram was the biggest issue. You have a swap file, scratch file, programs, data, add ins all on one hard disk- and not enough ram, so your system creates itself a reversed ram disk. Wait wait wait. Chug chug grind goes the hard drive. I just checked ebay- 4 more gb for $10, 16 more for $20- and if you still have 4 slots open you won't have extras left over. (https://tinyurl.com/y8t7wjw4)
Some newer programs just didn't like thee olde video card. Including the new Mozilla. I'd get the "curtain" effect, also- a half a picture- wait- then the bottom half. Every . Large . Picture. And I think that "M" designation means "MMM manother $100 meow!" I've got an OK 4gb PC video card- half the price of the same Mac one. There's only two issues: I don't get the Apple boot screen- just a gray flash- then the mountain. And Yose didn't have a mention of the new fangled video stranger in it's install plist, so if I'm installing from a nuke-n-pave, I put the old card in, install the OS, then unplug and exchange the cards when done and before any other applications get loaded. Just the video card made a biiig difference in Elements, on both PC and Mac sides.
Been there. Boot, run Nikon programs, fix pictures, save files, reboot. Run NIK, molest settings, save files, reboot. Run Adobe programs, adjust pictures, save files again, reboot. Program #4? Or something else? Bleh!
Then I bought a 2tb HDD for @ $50- got real tired of burning directories of pictures to DVDs, then deleting them because AGAIN I got real snap happy at one more wedding/ reception/ dinner event. There just wasn't room anymore. OS and programs on the old, *everything* else worth keeping on the new. Made an obvious difference. (https://tinyurl.com/y8dhh8co)
So new programs and OS get bigger and better and need waay more room. And processing power (ebay, 2xX5450, $50, https://tinyurl.com/ycc58qy3). In the olde days, 50 pics with a 6mp camera, storage wasn't that big an issue. Now you have 500 pics from a 35mp, shooting raw + jpg, all before lunch. And you need to keep a copy of ALL iterations. Times Have Changed since PS3. For less than the price of one lens I have a new enough computer. Nikon, NIK and Adobe are happy. Wife i$ happy. I am happy.
