Thought I had read/heard it all but the other evening I was looking at reviews on You Tube, the reviews were focused on comparing Nikon and Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 FX lenses. In the conclusion of one review, the bottom line was "buy the Tamron because it's cheaper by over a thousand dollars. You can always sharpen your images in post processing." HUH???? I guess ya get what ya pay for? Why not get the sharpest image possible and work from there AND potentially eliminate the need to sharpen in the first place????

I guess it depends on two things.
#1 If you are a cheap bastard you go for the less expensive lens and deal with the inferior quality of the end result
#2 If you simply can't afford to buy the OEM Nikkor lens you buy the less expensive Tamron.

#1 needs some explaining. This means, you could afford the more expensive lens but opt to buy the less expensive one because you are a pinch penny kind of person, not because you can't afford it.

#2 is explained like this. You can't afford the more expensive lens, OR you can't justify it and you are on a tight budget. (or your wife says NO! to the more expensive lens)

With respect I was fine with your post until you needed to explain it to us. For most of us, at least for me, no explanation was necessary. I got it.

Gee, YouTube is always such an authoritative source. There are many opinions from many sources...pick one you like.

You almost always need to sharpen an image, even if you don't have a low pass filter on your camera. Most images benefit from some sharpening, and others from partial sharpening applied to some areas of the image. Other images look great when you defocus a bit.

But you should keep your options open. Sharpening in post processing cannot add detail that was not originally captured. On the other hand, details that are captured, even with a 5 or 6 mp camera, are usually enough to make a 40x60 print or bigger, since the viewing distance is usually greater, and your ability to actually see those teeny tiny details diminishes as the distance increases. Consider that your Multiplex shows hi res movies in their Sony 4K rooms - and that is only 8.8 mp.

Some people might take offense to my "cheap bastard" comment so I thought I'd explain.

Not clear why valuing economics is cheap or makes one a bastard but you can include me in that group.

Nonetheless the OPs quote seems to lack context. Sharpening does not fix most lens issues and can exacerbate some. I’d have to read the article to know what to think about the comparison. Need a link to do that.

The youtuber in question obviously doesn't understand what sharpening does.

Sharpening doesn't really "sharpen" at all - it adds definition to the edges giving the appearance of sharpness. It's very good at fixing softness from AA sensors and even limited amounts of diffraction. What it's not good at is fixing photos that just aren't sharp. If it was, then no one would buy sharp, expensive glass, we'd all just crank up the sharpening on soft photos and save $$$$$$. Sharp and cheap very seldom go together.

Actually, Steve, I think the OP understands the concept of sharpening and was taken aback by what he read. I've had the same experience myself. Example: "Mode P means Professional."

I agree - I was referring to the YT review the OP mentioned, not disparaging the OP - In fact, I agree with him :)

But, Steve, isn't YT always honest and accurate and 100% objective? If not, I'm very confused......

For me it's all about #2.

As for Mode 'P', I've changed it on my cameras to 'BTM', 'Better Than Me'!

Cheap and Quality are typically antonyms.

Seems like there are two kinds of people into photography:

#1. Does exhaustive research, decides on the best quality equipment available to fit his/her needs; searches for a reputable source offering competitive pricing.

#2. Seeks the cheapest product, regardless of quality. Listens to others' uninformed claims (and offers same) without doing research.

Both kinds are members of this forum.

Yep, and if you search, you can finds youtubes claiming that Hitler is alive and living in a secret Nazi base underneath Antartica with the rest of his SS buddies and is being kept alive through the miracles of Nazi medicine and science. While youtube has some great videos, they also have some very questionable ones.
