NIK is good software and fun to use.

Google bought it, mined it for features to put in their Android apps, then made it "free" and ended any future development or support.

Last year, DxO Labs in France bought NIK rights, promised to bring it up to date and support it. NIK fans were excited.

Now, DxO Labs is in financial trouble. According to at least two websites, DxO is in financial trouble. On one it says "A new version of Nik Collection software was being planned by DxO Labs after the suite was acquired from Google just last year, but that looks uncertain now."

It would be very disappointing to see it fade away. I felt I more than got my $250 worth, so I didn't mind when Google offered it free a couple of years later

I bought a new computer in February + the latest PS Elements, and had a very difficult time getting the free Nik download from DxO to work with Elements 2018. It's fine at the moment, and I might do what I did for months with my previous laptop: leave it offline all the time, so won't get any pesky updates that might upset my current software!

Nothing wrong with the free version and it is still available, and probably always will be downloadable from somewhere...

I've never been able to get Nik to work with PS Elements....it loads up ok, applies the filters, but when I click on "ok", it shuts down Elements...every time!

I am running an older iMac...2008, but with High Sierra v10.13.2. PS Elements is v14. I think the problem is I only have 4mb DDR memory. Or it could be the Nvidia 256mb graphics card....

Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions on this?

It works better with 16 bit programs. PSE is mostly 8 bit. Your system memory could be an issue, but the graphics card is definitely not the problem. I ran a dual screen setup with two 1920x1280 displays for a few years using a 512 mb graphics card, without issues. I upgraded to a Nvidia Quadro with 4 gb for the extra bit depth for my 10 bit displays - only a very slight improvement in graphics performance.

But you might want to upgrade your 10 yr old computer. Just sayin'

When I first got Nik I had a 4 g RAM PC. It would not run, and did just what the OP described. Upgraded the old computer to 8 G ram and it worked fine.

Well, I can understand why you'd say that, Gene, but, I need a new set of tires for my car to pass inspection ($600), and the car needs a front end alignment because of all the pot holes in PA (another couple hundred), and I have two sick dogs that have to be taken care of. That, plus the fact I'm retired, so a new computer is WAY down on the list...that is unless you'd like to finance one for me....Just sayin'

Thanks, Sodapop! That sound like a much better (even if temporary) fix than what Gene suggested.

Time will tell, but the NIK we all have will continue to work.

Yes! There is a very easy fix and it works.

I had the exact same problem with PE18 that I just bought and therefor lost all my plug-ins. I also have a Mac.

I am sorry that I cannot tell you the exact steps I took, But...if you Google that your NIK crashes when you try to save with PE18, (which is what I did) I was able to find the answer and it works. It is just a very small adjustments.

Just an extra FYI to someone else here....but, I did have to completely uninstall the Nik collection on my Mac and had to reinstall and everything is now in “filters” in PE18.
Hope this helps.

I have a mid 2011 iMac that had 4mg of ram. For about $100 at MicroCenter I bought an additional 8mg and installed it in the panel on the bottom of the screen. So now with 12 mg, everything loads and runs faster. Not ideal, but I don’t want to pay another $100 just to get the last 4 mg that the system could use.

I also have priorities other than a new computer. Good luck.

We have been using NIK since they started, they later improved and added functions, functions that the latest chimes on the block cannot due. We usually use NIK first then go to the other or others. The others that we use do not have the pixel functions of NIK.

I still use the NIK version I downloaded for free from Google. I have installed multiple versions of PSE, PS CC, and Lightroom since then and NIK continues to work fine.

I have problems with certain aspects of NIK closing down ELEMENTS. But not every time. I can use most things, but more often than not SILVER EFEX PRO allows me to make all the changes I want then shuts down when I try to save. Mainly I use it quickly see what looks good, then try to replicate in ELEMENTS. That said, I just managed to save a shot that I applied antique plate and copper tone too. But no faith in being able to do that again.

I raised the issue on here a while back. The more learned hoggers suggested it might be a memory issue (I have only 6mb on this old refurbished desktop).
