Well, I got the lens back from Sigma, (Actually Kurts Camera) and I couldn't be happier. Repair costs ran $141.00 with shipping. The lens is AWESOME. For what I have invested in it ($241 total) It might be the biggest bargain in my Camera Bag. It seems Sharp, Contrasty, and the Brokah is better than I expected. I have no other long lens to compare it to, and maybe that's a good thing.

I'd highly recommend Kurts Camera Repair, they'll get all my Nikon & Sigma service in the future.

Here is how they compare.

Well that chart doesn't bode well for my purchase. Although for what I have invested in it now ($100.00) Plus a phone call to Sigma where they gave me a "Guestimate" of $160 for repairs. I might not fair too bad. I mean even though it doesn't score the best, for a $260.00 investment, I think I'm pleased. Time will tell though.

Well I got the lens this evening, and paid a LOT less than asking price ($100) The lens looks like brand new, focus seems sharp and accurate. There is a problem though, and I'm hoping it wont cost an arm & a leg to get repaired. The aperture does not "snap back" to wide open. Aperture works when you move the lever on the back, but seems like the spring is broke, or just came off. I can shoot wide open with it, but I'd sort of like to get it repaired.

Any suggestions for this type of repair? Rick Riggens Maybe? Sigma directly? I don't know if I made a mistake or not. I guess worst case scenario I can turn it into a table lamp. lol

If it is the last version with OS -$400 is a great price. Try and be at 450mm when you can and crop .....

It is the Optical Stabilized Lens, so I guess its the last Version. I couldn't find any reference to a Non OS version.

My biggest concern (looking back at posts when that lens first came out), was people seems to be "wishy-washy" about the sharpness. I'll take a few test shots with it, and if its remotely sharp, it sounds like it might be a bargain.

I have an opportunity to pick up a Sigma 150-500 Lens for my D800. Although I'd plan to use it for BIF, the reality is its mostly a bad case of GAS. I was initially looking at the Sigma 150-600, I know someone selling the 150-500 for $400.00.

Is it worth it? Advice from anyone that might have this lens would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks to you and DGStinner, its back to what it was. Whewwww, I was worried initially. I even deleted some of my old backups and created a new backup for the Catalogs on a different drive.

Everything is good again. Thanks for your help.

Okay, I need a little help so I don't totally mess things up. I had a PC with Windows 7 on it, and Lightroom5. I now have a newer PC with Win10, and decided to download Creative Cloud. At the moment, I have copied all my images from my old PC (Along with the Side Car Files) back into my new "Pictures Directory". The problem is, I have LOTS of backup catalogs, and some that say "Lightroom5 Catalog" I'm not sure what to do at this point. I don't want to import them all into the new Lightroom, or do I?

HELP, I'd rather not lose my edits, but I'm not sure of the procedure to return things to what I had on the old PC.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

I have made a lot of mistakes buying equipment that I did not end up using.
The einsteins and the cyber commander are not one of my mistakes.
I do own most all of the buff modifiers but that is yet another story.

Best of luck

Thanks for your input Russ, I sympathize with your regret on previous purchases, we've all been there I suppose. I guess I'm preaching to the choir though? I think maybe I'll call Buff and find out for sure the limitations. Too bad Paul passed away, it would have been just as easy to post a question to him over at Fred Miranda's site.

Thanks again,

The Cyber Commander CAN fire Buff units other than the Einsteins, but only as a dumb trigger - you cannot set the output on those as you can with the Einstein units. You need to order the receiver and cord that plugs into the appropriate units - Bees are different than White Lightning, for example.

That is not a bad thing, just a limitation.

Looking at the online PDF for the Cyber Commander, it eludes to the fact that you can control the Modeling Lamp and Flash Power of Any Bee, or White Lightning with the CSR+ or CSRB+ receiver. Although you probably cant turn other features off/on (like tracking), if I can adjust the modeling lamp, and flash power, AND get a flash meter out of the deal, it STILL doesn't sound bad.

The Problem is; I'm reading this manual like a legal contract, looking for some hidden verbiage making me think I'm getting something I'm not.

To clarify, you're saying I cant control output or Modeling Lamp intensity with a bee & white lightning providing each has its own CSRB+ Receiver ?

Russ,

Thanks for your response. With your input, and Cliffs response, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a Cyber Commander. The only thing that confuses me is you make it sound like the full features of the Cyber Commander are only available with the Einsteins. I thought I could do the same with Alienbees & White Lightnings triggered with the CyberSync + receivers. Is that not the case?

Also, thanks for the video link, it was.... ummm Interesting!

I do not find it quite as intuitive as my Sekonic, but yes, it works and if you are only going to measure the Buff units and are willing to work through its sorta quirky operation it does fine. For the price and the ability to fire and meter from the one device, it is pretty cool.

Thanks CaptianC, that's about what I expected. Its encouraging to hear that besides the quirks, it functions. I'm not using PW Triggers, so I suspect a Sekonic meter wont fire the Buffs. I appreciate you're feedback, looks like the Cyber Commander might be worth looking into. Thanks again.

Does anyone use the Cyber Commander? I'm particularly interested in how that unit functions as a flash meter. Is it good enough to NOT purchase an additional flash meter

When I search for the dslrdashboard app I get a message saying it is no longer supported. It's suggested to try qdslrdashboard but search doesn't find that. :| Thanks for the heads up on uninstalling the Nikon app, though.

Hmmmm I went to the Play Store and DSLR Dashboardf seems to still be there. QDSLRdashboard is for the PC to Teathered Camera I believe

I had not previously been much interested in wireless, but I just got my first Galexy tablet, mostly so I Google away from home. For phone calls I still use a $30 Motorola phone that makes phone calls and does texts.

Now that I have a D750 that has wi-fi without having to buy a separate gadget, I decided to try the wi-fi. Having never used a tablet before it took all day to figure out how to set it up, then another day to figure out how to download and use the Nikon wireless app, Nikon WMU (wireless mobile utility).

OK, so it works. And it's not hard to use once it's understood.

I can send pictures from the camera to the tablet, where I can email them. I can use the tablet to trigger the camera. But all I can control is the focus point (by tapping on the tablet screen) and tripping the shutter.

Are there any other apps that allow for more camera control, such as adjusting f stop, ISO, shutter speed and lens zoom? So far it's fun to play with but not all it could be. I can sit inside and monitor the live view then when a subject (birds) are in frame focus and shoot, but all controls have to be set at the camera.

What, if anything, am I missing? (I promise I will not shoot selfies with the tablet.) :-D
I had not previously been much interested in wirel... (show quote)

DslrDashboard is the app you want. On my Galaxy tab, I had to uninstall the Nikon software to get dslrdashboard to work properly. Somehow the Nikon app interfered with it even though it was not running. I used DslrDashboard with my D7100 and the Nikon wireless adapter, but on my D800 I had to get the TP Link router and flash the software to make it the Pseudo Cam Ranger. The only thing I didn't care for is there is considerable lag time in refresh rates on the tablet. I Have no experience with the built-in WiFi of the d750, but I'm certain it will work wirelessly with the right IP address.

I'm considering one, the K-30X for a yet-to-be-delivered used Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 tripod (should get it Monday or Tuesday from B&H). It's going to be my first real tripod and have never used a ballhead. It's gotten high praise form DP Review though. Anyone have experience with it? Recommendations for or against?

I've got the K-30, its solid, stable, and for the cost, I cant imagine anything better. I Highly recommend it.
