Nikon WMU Wireles

I had not previously been much interested in wireless, but I just got my first Galexy tablet, mostly so I Google away from home. For phone calls I still use a $30 Motorola phone that makes phone calls and does texts.

Now that I have a D750 that has wi-fi without having to buy a separate gadget, I decided to try the wi-fi. Having never used a tablet before it took all day to figure out how to set it up, then another day to figure out how to download and use the Nikon wireless app, Nikon WMU (wireless mobile utility).

OK, so it works. And it's not hard to use once it's understood.

I can send pictures from the camera to the tablet, where I can email them. I can use the tablet to trigger the camera. But all I can control is the focus point (by tapping on the tablet screen) and tripping the shutter.

Are there any other apps that allow for more camera control, such as adjusting f stop, ISO, shutter speed and lens zoom? So far it's fun to play with but not all it could be. I can sit inside and monitor the live view then when a subject (birds) are in frame focus and shoot, but all controls have to be set at the camera.

What, if anything, am I missing? (I promise I will not shoot selfies with the tablet.) :-D

The dslr dashboard app is a free download. Helicon remote is downloadable from their site for a fee. I had a hard time getting my 7200 to set up with these until i entered the camera IP of 192.168.1.1. I still need a lot of practice with these but their very promising.

I really like the WiFi on my 5300 and Oly TG860, for the same reasons you have stated. I shoot RAW+JPEG Fine on the Nikon and can edit the JPEG version, using Aviary or LR. I will be checking-out Motorman's suggested apps.

The one thing I wish I could figure out....how to import to my IPad without it resizing the photos? I keep the photos on my cameras until I can upload the them to my PC.

Thanks, motorman. Both these apps have all the features I'm looking for but first look shows that both work with the camera and tablet tethered via USB cable, which defeats the remoteness I want.

But I have also seen a YouTube video showing dslrdashboard working wirelessly with a Nikon D7 and a WU-1 unit, so I'll keep checking on it.

The other use I didn't mention is that you can monitor and record closeups of the fool who's walking down the street with your camera and tripod. :XD:

I'm using a Galaxy tablet (android), and very new at it, so I don't know how your IPad works. :|

When using live view and shooting (remote) I'm only seeing a small jpeg, but I can go to "view images in camera" and download with a choice of reduced or full size and the RAW file transfers to tablet.

Once there, I cannot send via email. I get a message that the file size exceeds 24.7 MB and cannot be sent. I suppose I could transfer to the computer via USB cable (I don't have the computer set up yet for wireless transfers), but instead I just pull the SD card and import directly to the computer.

Many email systems have a 5 or 10 megbyte limit for attached files.

FYI, it is considered poor form to send humungous files via email. Large files (mega bytes in size) take up a lot of bandwidth, the user may be paying for bandwidth, on mobile devices etc, and it can clog up the receivers mail system resulting in delays when accessing mail. Also some devices are incapable of displaying large photo files.

Unless you know for sure the recipient is ok with large email files, it's better to stick with small jpegs, for email. It is better to use the photo sharing systems, Flicker, Picassa, UHH... etc for sharing large files.

DslrDashboard is the app you want. On my Galaxy tab, I had to uninstall the Nikon software to get dslrdashboard to work properly. Somehow the Nikon app interfered with it even though it was not running. I used DslrDashboard with my D7100 and the Nikon wireless adapter, but on my D800 I had to get the TP Link router and flash the software to make it the Pseudo Cam Ranger. The only thing I didn't care for is there is considerable lag time in refresh rates on the tablet. I Have no experience with the built-in WiFi of the d750, but I'm certain it will work wirelessly with the right IP address.

Understood and agreed. So far the recipient is me, and I've told myself it's OK. :XD:

When I search for the dslrdashboard app I get a message saying it is no longer supported. It's suggested to try qdslrdashboard but search doesn't find that. :| Thanks for the heads up on uninstalling the Nikon app, though.

Well Oddjobber you inspired me. I finally did the deed. I downloaded the Nikon Wireless Mobile Utility App to my iPad, enabled the wireless utility on my Nikon D750, set up on a tripod, and used my iPad to control the camera to take a selfie. Now I'm sending the pic over email from my iPad using the app. I like it the text is BIG which is good for us older people. All just for fun. (It was!)

But that's one expensive selfie. LOL

I used a 20mm lens because that's what was mounted on the camera. ISO100, f2.8, 1/1000, with on camera flash using iTTL and set at -0.7ev. I was about 30" from the camera.

Doing what you love - priceless. Good job.
Next time you shoot, you've just cut your price per pic in half! :-D

Thank you!!

Ha ha the math doesn't lie!

Correction: Can't edit the description any longer. The shutter speed was 1/200 not 1/1000, ISO was 100 not 320.
