Not exactly............

According to multiple news reports O'Mally opposed sending juvenile illegal immigrants to a single site in Western Maryland. The state hosts illegals now, and is identifying other sites for such accommodations.

Ok, who are you going to believe? O'Malley, ex-mayor of gang ridden, homicide central Baltimore or this White House? They're both pointing fingers at each other. Yeah, you have quite a choice of who you want to believe.

Typical of bleeding heart liberals, Maryland's Governor O'Malley made a national speech that "if we have a heart" we'll allow these illegals to stay. But within 24-hours of that speech he was "secretly" recorded having a conversation with a White House official pleading with her not to send any of these illegals to the State of Maryland. What a POS this guy is, and he's seriously considering a 2016 run for the presidency. But he's so typical of these lying liberal hypocrites. Heaven help us. Let's hope we can throw them out of office before it's too late.

You're not alone. Nikon did the same thing to its Capture NX2 program. Ironically, I stopped using Aperture years ago because I sensed Apple was not committed to developing it…so I switched to NX2 only to have it dropped by Nikon. So now I'm viewing the online tutorials for Lightroom. Since Adobe's main business is developing this type of software, I feel there's a good chance they'll support Lightroom for years to come. Let's hope.

Yes, that's what I also hear, but the problem will come when you upgrade your OS or have to replace your computer. Jason Odell, who has written the book on Capture NX2, highly recommends moving to Lightroom. I've now begun to process some NEF files with Lightroom and find the results very satisfying…but my entire workflow has to be changed and I'm still using NX2 until I can comfortably make the switch. Shame on Nikon for not supporting what they started. As a result, I'm now free to look at other camera brands such as Fuji…I'm no longer bound to NX2 to process my NEFs.

Capture NX2 is essentially being dropped by Nikon, as it will no longer be supported as of this summer. It was developed by Nik Software, which was acquired by Google a couple of years ago. Google has shown no interest in investing in upgrades or support. This means that if you upgrade your OS in the future or buy a new computer (Winodws or Mac), Capture NX2 will not work. NX-D is not a replacement and is nothing more than a viewer. Over the years, I have been very happy with the results of NX-2 and am very sorry to see its demise. So, I am now going through the learning curve of Lightroom. You may be interested in Jason Odell's webinars on converting from NX-2 to Lightroom. See: jason@luminescentphoto.com

On the southwest tip of Marathon is the Visitors Center to Pigeon Key, which is the historical site of where the workers lived who built the Flagler Railroad in the early 1900s. You can walk about a mile and a half along the old bridge to reach the tiny island or you can take a ferry boat. Either way, there are excellent photo ops. The old cottages of the work camp have been restored, and the small beach and ferry landing are very photogenic.

This is an especially interesting subject as I used to run an ad agency with a media research and buying department. After retiring, I am now working full time as a freelance writer and photographer for several national boating magazines. So, I think I have a basic understanding of what's happening in the "print" publishing industry. To begin with, most magazines must sell at least 50% of their monthly pages to advertisers in order to BREAK EVEN. So if a pub has 150 pages total for the month, they need to generate 75 pages of ad revenue to pay for writers, photographers, art directors, graphic production, printing and postage…the costs of which have increased dramatically over the past several years. Don't think your $12 annual subscription goes very far in paying the cost to produce anything of quality. And just think, it would take 100 years of not reading Pop Photo to pay for one half of that new pro lens.

Large news weekly magazines that used to attract high numbers of readers have suffered because they don't offer anything very special. (Newsweek, Time) But highly specialized "enthusiasts" magazines like
ham radio's QST, Wooden Boat and Model Railroader are surviving because they offer the enthusiast valuable information and the experience of their peers and mentors. I still enjoy reading Outdoor Photographer because I can't personally travel to all the locations I read about. I learn something new every issue and am inspired to go places myself. And I still read Pop Photo because I usually find one or two little tips that I can use in my work. And believe it or not, I learn from reading the ads. I find out about new products, and I get a sense of what companies are leaders in the industry.

But most importantly as a photographer, I appreciate the tactile sense of sitting down with a cup of Joe or something stronger, putting my feet up and opening to a beautiful 2-page spread of a photo by Ian Plant, David Muench or Frans Lanting. Can I do this online? Sort of. But I don't want to sit at my computer any more than I have to. I want to feel the paper and turn the page. I don't want to scroll up or down or zoom in and out.

Some comments here suggest that print is dead or dying. Yes, in the past 5 years three major boating magazines I used to write for have closed their doors. One cannot discount the damage this economy has done to such non-essential products as boats, RVs or DSLR cameras. But some magazines have not only survived, a few new ones have been born that are doing extremely well. The secret is delivering that "experience" which comes from superior writing and photography and even the quality of paper. The secret is making the publication highly relevant to a vertically narrow segment of the market.

If you're not getting something out of these magazines, then maybe you know everything you need to know. Perhaps you should try some of the other magazines that are meant more for pros like Digital Photo Pro or American Photo.

One thing is certain. We now have many more choices of where to get our information and be entertained. Smart publishing companies understand the importance of superior content and are finding many more ways of delivering that content to enthusiasts like us. They not only publish print magazines, but online versions, e-Newsletter and more. Today I use most of these delivery methods, but I would not like to rely on electronic delivery alone.

It's amazing to me how so many "smart" people can't admit to making a mistake and voting for these dishonest, corrupt politicians. The MSM are the worst offenders. They have "enabled" this incompetent and dishonest administration from the very beginning and still refuse to recognize the harm it is doing to our country. But maybe, just maybe, they are starting to see the light. Benghazi could be the turning point followed by an indictment of Lois Lerner of the IRS. Eventually, as Nixon discovered, the truth will come out.

Hi,

I've been enjoying the various photo topics and viewing images from fellow photographers. I am a retired ad agency owner and am now working full time as a writer/photographer for the boating industry. I shoot with a Nikon D300S and pro glass as well as a Nikon P7800 that I keep with me at all times. At the moment, I am a disgruntled Nikon owner because the company has decided not to support its Capture NX2 RAW processing software, and I am having to learn LR and change my workflow. This will probably lead me to consider other cameras such as the Fuji X series. Overall, this forum is both informative and fun to read.
