I know we've discussed this topic before, but I have something to add. I've decided not to renew Pop Photo and Outdoor Photographer when they expire. When a new issue arrives, I skim through it and add it to the pile, thinking I'll get back to it another time. I never do.
I recently went through Pop Photo, and ripped out all the ads. What had begun as a magazine with 95 pages wound up as a 50-page magazine. Of course, I'm paying just $12.00 a year, but if all I do is skim and pile these things, why bother? I'll use that money to buy a new lens - eventually. :D

I've considered canceling, but, there are often articles and tips I find interesting. As you say, it's only $12/year. Be a long time before that added up to any kind of lens! :-D :-D

Yeah, for the price, it's hard to resist. I spend so much time online that anything I want is available here.
I used to rip out pages that I wanted to read or reference later, but then that pile got too big, as well.

I know that problem! :-D :-D
I'm down to Outdoor Photographer and will not renew. My experience is similar. Piles of them and it would take too long to find the one I wanted if something popped up that I wanted to refer to. So much easier to Google a subject, any subject and find lots of hits and videos too. ;)

I used to write page numbers on the back cover so I could go back to an article later.
I am down to Popular Photography and Outdoor Magazine. For me, they still provide enough useful information. I sometimes also find useful tips therein. I photocopy pages that contain tutorials or other useful information, and file these pages in a folder.
The ads may inform me of a new product worthwhile looking into. I investigate using the Internet.
I collect the magazines for a while, and then mail them to a fellow photographer.

I love them all. Can't wait to get them.
Read them cover to cover, usually in 1 or 2 "sittings" if you catch my drift. ;)
Have subscribed to Popular Photography and Shutterbug for decades. Will continue to do so until the bloody end. In fact, the wife has specific instructions to put the latest copies of each in my casket with me. ;)
As a computer guy, it's easier to subscribe to RSS feeds from various sources and email myself the article for filing and future reference. The advertisers still get a brief glance, but I still have $12. What will it get me?
Now guys you are finding out why so many brick and morter stores are going out of business, when people won't even spend $12.00 for a year magazine then wonder why they can't find a camera store near them..........we all could do better.......

The times; they are ah-changing... :(
I subscribed to Pop Photo a few years back and the thing won't stop coming.
I never re-subscribed but they keep sending it anyway.
I might glance at it for a couple minutes but mostly I just throw it away.
The few stories and tips it does have always seem to be about post processing images as opposed to how to take better pictures.
But that's no surprise since virtually all the ads are for various computer imaging programs.
Photo magazines these days are close to worthless.

That's the kind of subscription I want. :
What I don't like is when it renews, and I pay, automatically.
Magazines like to have a large list of subscribers because it looks good to advertisers. Sending you a subscription for free, as opposed to receiving $12 from you, does them more good than harm.

Better idea than what I do- I dog ear the page(s) but even using your idea I would still have trouble finding the correct issue. As is often said: "Google is your friend". ;)

^^^This is EXACTLY what they do... continue to charge you whether you like it or not!
