Does anyone use Smugmug? What are the pros and cons? What other platforms compete?

I have an interest in finding a site where I can post my pictures for family friends and customers to view and possibly sell my pictures. Does anyone have experience with SmugMug (the bought flicker), adobeportfolio or can make a suggestion.

I just returned from the Galapagos last week. We did the Westin in Galapagos. I recommend doing the west first. That is what I was told from several of the naturalists. It was amazingly unforgettable, the trip of a lifetime. We were on the Silverseas Origin. They were the best we had 10 naturalists that were all extremely knowledgeable. Every day we did snorkeling and explored the islands to see the most amazing animals. First we flew to Quito in Ecuador for two nights then we flew to the Galapagos and spend seven days board the ship and then we flew the Guayaquil and then back to Miami. We were on the ship for 7 days and we were up very early 6:30, breakfast at 7 am off the ship at 7:45. Most mornings we did snorkeling or kayaking and always walks on difficult Terrain. The two hour walk on the island with the lava flow was worth it but extremely difficult terrain. Getting on and off the zodiacs on days when we had a surge was especially fun and potentially dangerous but the crew made it easy with their assistance. I suggest brushing up on some of exercises to gain abilities that require strength and stamina. Bring really good hiking shoes. I brought four cameras and four lenses. Don’t bother with the tripod. They give you a backpack but I used a camera backpack. One mistake that I made was not buying the underwater housing for my Sony RX 1000 VII. I bought a Kodak underwater camera that was awful, a piece of junk with terrible lens. Other than that I had the right gear. Primary camera was my Canon 5D mark IV with normally a canon 24-70 2.8L and my Canon 5DS. For add lenses I brought a Canon 70-200 2.8L III, a Canon 100mm L macro, and Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6L also a 1.4x converter. I used a Blackrapid two camera shoulder harness at times that I highly recommend. Most important is to bring a hat or two to protect you from the sun that covers the back of your neck as well. You must bring a super lightweight windbreaker to protect you from sun and the rain at times. But Sun protections must. During the one week vacation on the beautiful ship we crossed the equator four times! I am still processing about 2000 pictures. I intend to post a an album shortly on Adobe Portfolio. This will be a new app for me to use.

One of my B&H UV filters has a loose glass. It’s about 3 years old, and 82 mm. I tried to tighten it but I was not able to grip the inside ring enough to get it tight enough.

Very interesting. I go to the Galapagos in January 2023. I am planing to purchase a camera for snorkeling. Then I will take my Canon 5D IV, with just two canon lenses, my 24-70mm 2.8L zoom and 70-200 2.8L zoom. I need to take the 70 to 200 4.0 shots or outside and good light and that lens is half the weight. Might add my 5D III for my wife to use. Extra cards, batteries of course notebook, cheap knee pads, no tripod (no flash?)

I will not buy direct from canon! I am in the market to upgrade my 5DIV and looking at canon because of all the L series EF glass I own. If I have to switch to canon RF L glass the Sony a1 May now be a smart move.

I have the 5DS for about 4-5 years and I love the high resolution the pictures are incredible. That said my go to camera is my 5D mark IV. I use the 5DS for specific tasks like landscape photography and once for clothing catalogue photography for my daughter in my studio where it was required to see the stitching. Stamp and coin photography where extreme detail is most important. Anytime high resolution is most important and light is sufficient it’s amazing. I also have a 5D III that I only used for a short span and that became my back up camera (virtually new) after buying my 5DIV about 3-4 years ago. My 70D I kept to have the crop factor but it sees little action. With all the great reviews about the canon 5r I am thinking about hard about changing to an all mirrorless system. This would mean selling all my 4 DSLR’s and my 7-8 L series canon lenses and sigma Art lenses plus a few EF-S lenses. Replacing my kit with just one r5 camera and with as many new RF lenses would be insanely expensive. I need to limit my lens purchase to about half of what I have now (I have many lenses I hardly ever use) but that would still cost about 16k for lenses plus 3.9k for the r5 plus the new cards are really expensive.

I have had excellent experience with many purchases over the last ten years with both Adorama and B&H.

It’s now time to sell my canon 5Diii that I never used because I bought my IV series a few month later, and my 5DS as well because 45 MP In the new EOS R5 is big enough not to own both.

I have a large pelican air that I use for both storage and transporting my gear. They are strong water resistant to several feet and secure as it gets. I have the dividers not the foam so it’s infinitely adjustable, I highly recommend them.
