I wanted to share some pics I took this morning of bees on our Silver Leaf Maple tree. I noticed that when I posted the photo I notice that the richness of colors is missing from the posted photo. I am working from an iMac which I know has a bright screen. I exported and converted to jpg files with LR. When I view the JPG file on the iMac using the Mac preview app is looks fine. The UHH preview does not. What am I doing wrong here?

Here is an example.

Thanks for your help,

When I started looking for a DSLR I decided that a top mounted lcd info screen was importunate to me. The K1 and K3ii have it the K70 does not. I have an older K7 and a newer K3. I still want the top mounted lcd. But to each his own.

I would strongly recommend you consider the 18-135mm lens for your first lens. It utilizes the same DC electric motor for focusing as Pentax uses in the camera body. It is like holding a snake, really fast focusing. If price is a consideration, the Pentax kit lenses 18-50mm and 55-200mm are really good first lenses as well and have metal flanges.

I believe once you start processing your photos you will wish you had the built the GPS offered by the K3ii. My older K3 requires an add on GPS that mounts on the flash shoe which is a bit of a pain.

If you choose the K3ii, Adorama is currently selling the Pentax A200 external flash for $149 which is a more versatile flash than the built in flash on the K70.

What ever your choice you will have a great setup to start your digital photography journey.

Trying to decide on a new laptop or something like the Microsoft surface pro to use exclusively for photo storing, cataloging and editing
I’m rethinking my systems
I do pretty basic unsophisticated editing.
And I want to efficiently make photo books.
I have done apple books but am also using google photos because more storage available at lower cost.
Would like to keep it under 1500$
Will also commit to an editing program and stick to it!! You
So? Suggestions? Opinions? Thank you!!

As already noted the MBP will cost more, but the operating system (OS) includes Apple’s
Photos app that is a good simple editing package. Currently all OS upgrades are free and include decent Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, PDF viewer, Movie maker and Music creation software. I would suggest a good external hard drive to store your images as the new MBP use expensive solid state drives.

If you are serious about processing your images you can’t beat the Adobe CC subscription package that includes Lightroom and Photoshop IMHO. It costs $120 per year. But you will need to invest some time and money for video trading courses to become comfortable with either package. Laura Shoe (laurashoe.com) offers an excellent LR training video training package for less than $100. PS training will be more expensive. One neat feature of LR is all your edits can be undone. As you gain more insight you can revisit your old images and re-edit them without any loss of quality.

Good luck on your decision. Have fun.

I need help in finding a good, simple photo editing program. I have had to buy a new computer with Windows 10 and my old programs will not work on it. I loved the simplicity of the old Olympus "Camedia" program which I used for years. The free program that comes with Windows 10 is not as good as the 7 was and will not add text or be flexible in the printing.

I need to "adjust" light, color, sharpen, crop & rotate, add text, and rename. I need to be able to print 12 or 20 to a page with the names on each photo.

I've tried Adobe "Lightroom". You can not add text with it and it is a monthly charge - not free or one time purchase.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also make sure you have a flashlight to help you with your camera controls. You might want to see if you can find one that will allow you to add a red lens so as to not have problems with your night vision. The old Mag Lites had this feature.

Hi, guys. I just picked up a late 2011 MacBook Pro, 15 inch, 2.2 i7. I wanted to try a Mac because my collection of PC’s are driving me nuts. A good deal from a fellow photographer. My issue now is that I may not have enough ports to do what I’d like. It has one first gen Thunderbolt port and 2 USB 2.0 ports. I bought a MDP to HDMI adapter to run a 27” monitor but that will use the TB port leaving me with only the USB to run hard drives, etc. I’ve been seeing some add on boxes that will give me the HDMI outlet and a USB 3.0 which would help but they’re not cheap. Not a lot of adapters available for this model compared to the newer Macs. Has anyone been through this scenario and tried various options? I’m not sure I’ll like the Mac which is why I didn’t dump a lot of money into Apple right away. I’m wondering if I should just put the brakes on this setup and move up to a later model with 2 TB2 ports? I don’t want to start a Mac/PC war on here, just want to hear from folks who have been using Macs forever. Thanks.

You should check out a Thunder Bolts dock. We have one from OWC. Check macsales.com. We run a single Thunderbolt cable from our 2015 MBP to the dock. The dock provides connections for a 27” monitor, internet connection, USB connections for the keyboard, camera, speakers, printer and backup hard drive. Works great for us.

I used to believe glass was a liquid and that accounted for the distortion in the glass. But according to this Scientific American article, that isn't the cause. It's an interesting read and corrected some misconceptions I had about glass.

Thank you for the correction, so much for my 50 year old materials science course.😀👍👍

Glass is actually a very viscous liquid. Consequently really old plane glass windows will be thicker at the bottom which will impact reflection as well. I believe the angle of the camera plane relative to the plane of the glass will make increase or decrease the effect. I will let the real photographers tell how best to take good pictures of old glass. Being a novice I would experiment with camera angle and see what works best.

Take your time and look around. The poison blue jean frogs for example are very small and easily missed. If you have the opportunity to visit the nature areas hire a guide. They will show you things you will miss on your own. During our visit, Mt Arenal was covered by clouds, however late one night the clouds thinned out and we could briefly see the red lava flows through the clouds.

You will have a great time.

And, yes, PS is non-destructive editing.

I don't propose to be an expert here. But if you are using PS and edit a jpg file in any way and then save it, have you not just performed a destructive edit? You can not reopen the file and remove the edit. With LR you can always go back in history and start over again even with jpg files.

Hi all,

My name is Kevin Kern I just got my first DSLR after many years of shooting 35mm. My question is what is considered a good entry level AIO printer? Oh and what about generic ink?

Thanks I have been reading the topics for a few months now.

Welcome Kevin,

After having two expensive Canon AIO printers fail I switched to an Epson XP-850. That was 6 years ago. It is still going strong and makes beautiful prints on Epson paper. It is quite compact but will fax, copy, scan and even print legal size if you use the back paper slot. I have only used Epson Inks because of some of the horror stories from people who attempted to use 3rd party ink.

I'll tell you why. Day before yesterday my camera club had some guest speakers come and talk at length about stable platforms i.e. tripods, monopods, bean bags and discs. Mefoto was the one that was singled out by many that said it was not doing what they wanted. Many concurred. This was the only tripod that was singled out as not performing up to the standards that most people expected.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I would like to of any specific issues they identities

Never Never Never buy a MeFOTO. They are crap. But a Gitzo or Manfrotto is cool. For your purposes I'd look at an aluminum Manfrotto with twist lock legs. Make sure it is rated at double the weight you plan to use it for. The ball head is nice too but I'd opt to adapt is to an Arca Swiss plate system.

I fail to see how you arrived at your comment. Mefoto is not expensive but both Amazon and BH reviewers give it a 4.5 out of 5.

I would take the D750 and the Nikon 28-300mm lens, nothing else. Reasonably compact, very competent, and will do almost anything you would need to do without excess weight and bulk. Also have a 77mm CPL in your pocket for when its useful.

I agree with MTshooter but I would also add a good cross body strap. Optech makes one that includes an embedded steel wire to make it cut resistant. Check with Carter at cameracottage.com.
