+1 for Crucial. They are one of the premier memory manufacturers in the world. I've used their products in a lot of computers, including Macs, over the years without issues.

I see no one mentioned Amazon Smile in this discussion. If you buy a lot from Amazon you can make a difference by going to smile.amazon.com. For every eligible purchase Amazon will make a donation to a charity of your choice. Once you're signed up, if you follow a link to an item they ask if you want to be redirected to the same item on smile.amazon.com so the donation gets made. This doesn't cost you anything, the funds come from Amazon. I place about 40 Amazon orders a year. I selected the American Diabetes Association as my charity. They only get a few bucks from my orders but overall this organization received over $78,000 and all the charities combined received almost $70,000,000!

You should update your version of Windows 10. Your version is 2 years old (1511 = November 2015). There are a number of devices, for example Logitech web cams, that didn't work in earlier versions of Windows 10 but were fixed in newer versions. There's no charge for the update.

If it was YOUR brain being operated on, how much surgeon training would be too much?

The web address is wrong. It should be https://www.hhs.gov/ocr/.

One thing I give them credit for, is that they fight off viruses and malware better than any other operating system. .

I'm not sure that's totally accurate. From the perspective of a malware author, there's greater rewards and perhaps profit, working to attack an OS used by > 85% of home computers. (Some will debate the Mac market share but the actual numbers are irrelevant as long as they are far from equal). Thus you see less targeted attacks against Macs.

On the other hand, Apple is notorious for denying vulnerability and delaying releasing patches. Bottom line is really "What platform runs the software you need at the best cost?"

I use PayPal a lot. If I'm buying something online from a merchant I'm not familiar with, I use PayPal. This way they get payment from PayPal and the merchant doesn't have my credit card number. I strongly suggest using PayPal's advanced security, which is known in security circles as two factor authentication. When you log in to PayPal they send you a text message and you have to enter that in the web page to access your account. This way if someone hacks your password they still can't access your account unless they have your cell phone. It's an extra step but a tremendous improvement in security.

I think just about everyone has a file loss horror story. This shortcut may help prevent what happened to you: to select all files in a folder highlight one file then hold down the CTRL key and press the A key. This selects all files in a folder. I haven't used it on a Mac so I'm not sure if it works there, but it's been in Windows for a very long time.

I guess I'd rather work with people who try to make conversation then stoic, unfriendly people. If you remember back to when UPC codes and scanners first came out, people didn't trust them so most stores had a policy that if it scanned wrong, it was free. That may be the source of the joke about it being free.

In St. Augustine check out the lighthouse on the island. There's also good views from the bay front downtown. Historic St. George St. is a tourist spot but there's some interesting old buildings.

For dining try Metro Diner on US 1 for breakfast. It's been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. There's a local seafood place that's on the water just off US 1 south of King St. It's hard to find but worth the effort. It's called Hurricane Patty's. Finally, on the island across the street from the beach is Salt Life Food Shack. Great sea food and awesome view if you sit outdoors on the roof. If you like adult beverages visit the St. Augustine Distillery. There's a free tour and tasting. They produce gin, rum, vodka, and just this month released their first bourbon.

I got one of those Microsoft virus calls. I'm a computer systems engineer so I, too, knew it was nonsense. He said "hold down the key with the Windows flag and press the R key". (that brings up the Run dialog) I asked him which finger I should use to hold down the Windows key. Apparently you can use any finger you'd like to hold down a key. It doesn't matter. I offered to make things go quicker by giving him my credit card number so he could take all my money and it seems he would like that. In return he would send me a new laptop. I laughed so hard I almost wet myself. Great fun. I like to think I held him up long enough that he called one less person that day.

No, it's not. LastPass encrypts the password and you have to enter a master password for LastPass to access the banking password. If you follow recommendations for long, complex, different passwords it can be a lifesaver.

You actually store your banking passwords on your computer ?
Isn't that akin to write your burglar alarm code next to the key pad?

The 5 volt source is NOT just for the light. It is required for most hard drives.

Yeah. I don't care about the 5v, which is probably just for the indicator light. I can find the + and - wires, but connecting them securely to the box could be a challenge. Maybe I could just solder them in.

Yes, but the nation of people whom Jesus preached to were called Israelites, or the nation of Israel.
