I was talking to a friend who works the register in a big store, and he was telling me about all the "funny" things people say when they're checking out of the store. When he checks a $20 or $100 bill, "It should be okay. I printed it just this morning." When an item doesn't scan, "I guess that must be free." When asked to press the Yes button on the CC machine to approve the amount, "I don't know if it's right. I can't add all that up in my head." It's always the same stupid comments, and he gets them all day long. They weren't funny the first time he heard them, and they're still not funny. He also said that it tends to be "more mature" people who make these comments and think they're being funny. So, resist the urge to sound funny or clever. You don't sound either. I admit that I have made the "just printed" and "It must be free" comments myself, but I've learned my lesson.
Your friend needs to lghten up.

I agree with ottopj. I work in retail. A couple of the better tools of customer service are getting to know your customer & humor. We get the "No the amount isn't okay" on a regular basis. One of my regular comebacks when a customer walk in: Customer; "I'm looking for a battery". Me; "Sorry, I sold the last one 5 minutes ago". With over 20 years of retail experience, I've found that humor can be a great sales tool if used appropriately.
Where do you work? You can wait on me. I go to stores where the employees have a sense of humor and are helpful. That's why I go to Whole Foods rather than Giant. I spend more but it's a whole different experience, both in product and employees helpfulness and knowledge.
Not funny when you keep putting in your 'Rewards' Credit card and picking Debit Card for payment. Seems to always get declined. Great test for the clerk.

That probably has a lot to do with management.
With self-help checkout in a lot of stores, I don't have too much interaction with a cashier anymore. I have found I can operate the scanner just as well as they can.

Yes, and that was the point of my post.
They won't refuse your payment, though. What's wrong with them hearing the same lame humor now and then? Better than hearing complaints about how long the wait was, how much everything costs............
Yes in an effort to appear friendly (which I'm really not:) I have made a comment or two when checking out. Lately, my reply to the cashier when he/she tells me how much I saved on this trip, has been "I would have saved a lot more by not coming in." Amazing the gambit of looks and reactions to that.
The one that bothers me, is "did you find everything you were looking for?" My reply is often a not funny, "I was looking for a bag with a million dollars in it, but didn't find one". They NEVER laugh at that, so I guess its not being used again!
Work long enough in any trade and one will hear the same lines. Premium or Regular before a barium enema always an ice breaker.
