[quote=SQUIRL033]got my first shots of cedar waxwings this season down at Juanita a few days back... as usual, they don't come too close - these were taken from about 40 feet away - but at least they weren't all the way up in the treetops!

this first shot is straight from the camera, no processing needed other than cropping a bit and resizing for the web...

not sure what this one was doing with the stick... i don't think they build their nests from twigs, do they? i took this shot mainly for the red tips on the feathers...

Very nice capture, we don't have them in Nevada.

Use Qimage Ultimate for printing. With many printers it will bypass the print length limitation. However, there is no guarantee it will work, and even if you could, you might have paper alignment issues. Better off getting a printer that natively supports roll feed.

Qimage only works with Windows O/S unless you can run Parallels on your Mac. But, it is a really great program. :D

Well it's done and I'll be posting a couple of images shortly.

Not everything went as I'd planned. I wanted to make it easy for myself while ensuring repeatable results. For me, that means a clamshell setup on a plain wall.
The house had no free space on any wall--limited space for shooting.
We ended up using a corner with a recliner. I had to do a lot of cloning during PP.

I average around 300 images for something like this, but I ended up shooting for less than an hour before they rushed out to have fun.

Bottom line is they liked the images and one of the women asked me if I'd shoot her in a better setting.

Colors are pretty bland, need contrast. Did you convert to sRGB before posting? Works better for using the internet...

Are you using a calibrated monitor? If your prints are not matching what you see on the monitor you should probably consider calibrating the monitor?

Wow, does one need your permission to post on this website? You might proof read your post in preview before posting it, or is leaning your camera your normal process?

If you want to own and maintain a D800, $3000 plus, and be cheap about leaning it, which you know nothing about, then do it. If you can not get it clean, do not come back here and ask what went wrong.

I agree, 2 G of Ram is woefully under powered. I use 12 in my Mac desktop and 8 on my MacBook Air.

Also, my Mac had 4 gigs of ram. It just was ok with a D2X, but when I moved to a D#, the machine noticeably slowed down. A local computer repair shop in La Quinta, CA doubled the RAM to 8 and it adequately handles my D800e RAW files fine. The cost of the upgrade with parts and labor was $100 last year. I thought that was a good deal. Speeds with Capture NX2 and PP with 35 mgp files is acceptable but not fast. I will upgrate my laptop soon. Visit a computer repair shop for the upgrade on RAM is my advice.

OK - I have been in and had a little look, there is a file in there saying that someone is sharing my computer on the bottom of the list. I haven't deleted it just yet, would it be possible that this would relate to dropbox, as I have recently installed this on the Mac to share my photos with my camera class that I attend and my camera club. COULD this be the problem do you think?

Have you tried using "Force Quit" to get rid of the spinning ball? Just click your cursor on the Apple icon at the upper left end of the top menu bar and a drop down menu will appear, click on Force Quit and then select which program you are wanting to quit. Usually stops it without going thru a full restart.

Here is another, straighten out a little, spot healing, and some tone adjustments. Next time you scan it in to make a file, I would recommend at lest 300 DPI. Makes for a little better resolution and easier to work with. It will also allow for more shrinkage of hard drive.

I find the pigeons in the background a bit distracting. I removed them with Capture NX2, Auto Retouch.

If your photography knowledge is anything like the way you write, no wonder you are having problems. The slop English you use is disgusting. You do not mention what flash you are using so how do you expect any help.

Are you a very unhappy person? Such sarachasim isn't really necessary!

No one has mentioned that @ 36 Mega Pixels for the D800, you better have a lot of ram and a sizable hard drive on your computer.

You are asking us to justify to you the purchase of a three grand camera and spending at least another one and a half on a suitable lens which you will need to make the exercise at all worthwhile, to replace your $300 kit.

It's your money so that can only be up to you to decide.

By the tone of your post however, I would say that buying a D800 is probably a bit over your head at the moment.

My suggestion is to buy a good used D7000, there are quite a few on the market from people moving up to the 7100 and they are going quite cheaply.

Few people actually NEED the extreme resolution of the D800.

Excellent shots. I have the same camera & lens but I don't think one can get 800mm from it. More like 600mm? From what I understand and have read the 1.3 is just a crop of the original shot to image size of 18X12 mm instead of a 24X16 mm original size, not a real multiplier....

But, I like your photos!

All shot in 1.3 crop mode providing an effect of an 800mm lens.

Yes, I was pretty upset when Nikon told me the software wouldn't work on Mtn. Lion. as I bought the MackBook Air to take on a Safari next month.

Thanks!

I have resolved the problem, even though the Nikon NX2 site says you must have the previous version of the software already installed, I was able to download version 2.4.3 and install it. It accepted my Key code from version 2.0 to go beyond the trial version. It would be helpful if Nikon employees at the NX2 service center knew something about their software. They told me Capture NX2 software wouldn't work on Mountain Lion 2.8.4 OSX!

Thanks UHH members!

When I purchased the Nikon Capture NX2 I was using a PC. The program was PC/Mac compatible. So when I switched over to Mac I could not install it so I contacted Nikon technical support to inquire about this and what to do. They responded in a couple of days to inform me that I had an older version and needed an update. I was 2 versions behind. They sent me update links to download and it has been working since. Now at that time I did not have Mountain Lion but have since updated to that version and my NX2 still works. Also, my wife bought a new imac and she installed NX2 on her new Mac with no problems. The update I recieved was the 2.3.2 version. I would contact Nikon technical support and explain your situation. It will probably take a couple of days before that get back to you. I hope this helps. I believe you are thinking of Nik Software, not the same as Nikon.
