It is rumored that Nikon will have a new mount for their future mirror-less camera.

I understand that the lens distance to sensor is shorter on mirror-less but why change mounts. Couldn't they keep the same mount and stick to the current body thickness. Replacing all my lenses is an expensive proposition.

Hobbling a lens with an adaptor is not in my future unless performance is not affected, and that is unlikely.

What am I missing?

They can make the cameras smaller with this mount. On the other hand they will have to make some of the lenses longer to make this work. That is why they needed to make the mount wider than the F mount is. And I am 100% sure they will provide an adapter to adapt F mount lenses with full functionality. Mirrorless cameras are only about less mechanics and more electronics in more compact bodies than possible with dslr. Lenses and sensors still need some distance from each other to function well. That can be controlled as needed with the length of the mounting part of the lens.

And maybe the new Nikon mirrorless cameras will not only be mirrorless but shutterless as well. That is the next step to take with mirrorless cameras. Good global electronic shutters will replace the mechanical shutter in the future. Maybe that is already happening with the new Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras.

Why?

It is very good before serious production is launched to know if there is a demand for the product. I guess that is the reason.

I think somewhere in my introduction I mentioned that I really am a novice. lol So much so that I have had lightroom 6 for 3 months and haven't opened it. Why? As stated i want to keep things natural. I may enhance color and clarity but that is it. I don't want any fancy stuff that, well quite frankly I didn't shoot. I do want to experience more of the Milky Way, love it, as my first time was last July and if I lived in Utah no one would ever see me. lol I love landscapes and cityscapes. Astrophotgraphy I want to add to my list but it's hard living in Indiana. Older small version of Indianapolis I shot.

Using pictures as the camera delivers them with little or no post processing is not about keeping things natural. It is about accepting camera limitations. You will never get what you really see into your pictures until you start post processing. Correcting shadows and highlights and colors and white balance is the minimum you need to do to keep things natural.

It is not worth much, around $100 give or take, I think.
If the camera was the "program" model it would add some to the price. The lenses look like standard cheap zoom lenses and will not bring much money, the filters are practically worthless.
Some info about the lenses would help figuring a price.

What is all this talk about b/w photography for the op?? The op is color blind, but that does not mean he sees in black and white, he just does not see all the colors of the spectrum. Many people who are not considered color blind do not do that either but still enjoy color photography.

Hi everyone. I am a nikon shooter, have had very good luck buying used (but well cared for) gear, occasionally shop on ebay, but have never bought anything on ebay. Several well reviewed sellers from Japan are selling gear at very good prices. My first reaction is no thanks, not worth the service support challenges with owning gray market. However....??? Has anyone been here and done that? Thanks Rod

I have bought from many countries on Ebay, including Japan, China, USA, Russia and many more. Never had a problem with the sellers, but my local postal service has messed things up 3-4 times by not delivering to the right address.

I read that he is selling all his Canon equipment.

Nikon has 3 good reasons for Canon photographers to switch to Nikon. They are called Nikon D500, Nikon D5 and Nikon D850. Some or all of this must be his reason to do so.

I don't want the D850 any more because I've read that there is too much noise. Maybe the pixels are just too many, or too small so that the limit of the technology is reached in this design. Plus, the camera has to be even more sensitive to vibration/shake/etc... due to the smaller pixels, which is required if the sensor is the same size as other dslrs, which is the 35mm size.

Comments?

Well, then someone else will get his camera a bit sooner since you do not want one. People are still lining up for this camera and I have not heard of any returns due to noise or other image quality issues.

Thanks for the tip on a different search engine. I like to check something else than google. Currently using yahoo search a lot.

Another thing. If you are thinking about how you can get good quality results from your photography without spending hilarious money like $2,000-$20,000 on gear I have some good advice for you, but it also depends on what you plan to shoot mostly. If you want my advice on this you are welcome to send me private message or ask here.

I'm reasonably new to UHH and have posted my share of photos. I've had a few disagreements with some of the members here and noticed that next to zilch (photos) are produced by them. Why are they here? Why don't they show their work? Just curious! I don't get it.

Many that do not post here a lot have their own websites or use flickr or other dedicated photo sites to post their pics. This site does not have a particularly good layout for posting photos.

Is either one usable at 600mm, or are you lost before you start?

Yes, I think you are lost before you start. A solution that would be better in my opinion would be to adapt a camera with 1.5 or 2.0 crop sensor to your lenses. Then you loose no light and get the reach you want. Plus the camera will not cost much more than the extenders but be useful in many more ways than extenders.

We all know that everyone has a favorite camera manufacturer ie Nikon, Canon, Leica, Sony, Olympus, Hassy, etc. I am going to buy my last camera and I want the camera and glass to be the best - short of buying a Phase One. I've been paid to shoot stills, motion picture film and video for 50 years. Now? I want to shoot for myself, plan out each shot and take all day if neccesary. I'm tired of schleping 50-60 pounds of gear with a crew. Something that tops out about 25 pounds or less would be perfect.

I rented the Fuji GFX 50S and the 120mm Macro prime and was very comfortable. It forced me to slow down and it felt good. Problem? I want to shoot some high-end slider video as well. I need to shoot 4K video and the HD 1080P video that the GFX 50S camera shoots is not sufficient. So my thought was to wait for the next iteration of Fuji's MF camera. Barring a Japanese earthquake, a thermo-nuclear bomb or the Second Coming of Christ (stated with genuine sincerity), the camera should appear somewhere in 2019, yes?

QUESTION: Should I wait for 2019 and get the new camera or load up on glass, buy a used GFX 50S and hope the body can be sold before the new camera comes out? After all, there's no guarantee that Fuji will try to support 4K video in their next MF camera. And for that matter, there's no real assurance that Fuji will develop another generation of MF camera to replace the GFX 50S. Your thoughts?

Thank you in advance for your opinion. - rf

As long as the GFX 50S is selling well I think they will not introduce a new model. But I agree that the next upgrade will probably be a 100 megapixel camera and it will probably have some 4K video. This upgrade could happen this year as both Nikon and Sony are rivaling this camera with the D850 and A7rIII. Both have 4K video and a resulution not far behind the GFX 50S. So I expect the advantages of the GFX 50S are not so many anymore in comparison to those cameras. So my guess it that the sales of the GFX 50S must be going downward now.

I will post pictures later as I do not have them with me here at work, but I was wondering if any here use a remote app from their phone? If so how does it work? Do you need to be connected at all times to wi fi? I have not set my camera yet for wifi. I use a Canon 6D. I have two tripods in which one has been modified so I can shoot from (guessing as I haven't fully extended yet) 15 to 30 feet up to get other angles of shots. Anyway, remote app users help me out please and thank you.

I have tried a wifi app for Nikon and do not like it. It is easy to use, you turn on the camera wifi and connect your phone or tablet to that network and you will see the picture from your camera on the phone before you press the shutter button on the phone. But this is actually all the app does in regards to taking the picture so I prefer to use a ordinary remote or 2 sec delay. Wifi eats batteries.

This is only one app and probably one of the worst apps for remote control of cameras so it basically all depends on how good the app is. You will just have to try and see what app suits your needs best.

QUESTION1--Is there a website where I can get answers to terminology questions, such as those that follow, but where I do not have to read several pages to get the answer? If so, please let me know. I am still camera shopping but I do not understand many of today's camera specs. For example, the following...

A.. fx format cmos sensor
B.. dx format cmos sensor
C.. aps-c cmos sensor
D.. low pass filter
E.. megapixel full frame sensor

QUESTION2-- May I have the names of good, reliable online camera stores in the western USA (because of shipping costs to Hawaii)?

QUESTION3-- When shopping online for DSLR cameras I seldom see brands other than nikon, olympus, cannon, & sony. Are there any other, less popular brands, that are worth seeking out so as to possibly get more bang for the buck? (I once had a russian-made slr film camera that I found cheap in a pawnshop in okinawa. It took okay pix &was the one I took along when deployed. If it got lost or clobbered, no big deal. Any such dslrs nowadays that might be worth a dice roll? If I roll craps then... que sera sera.)

Tell us what you plan to shoot and there will be some people ready to give you tips about the best camera for the intended use. There is quite a difference in cameras that are optimal for shooting sports and fast moving objects vs. cameras for landscapes or studio portraits etc.
Also what budget you are looking at and do you have any lenses from film cameras that you might still use. Even old russian lenses work fine on some modern digital cameras.
