His blog today says more details to follow on tomorrow, Wed. An earlier post said the D5 AF system is superior to what Canon has. He's been posting about shopping retail for a D850 body so it wasn't that Nikon sent him a bunch of free equipment.

Sponsorship deal?
He just wanted to try something different?
He got tired of being corrected for spelling Canon with two n's?

Could be the same reason why David Burnett is switching to Sony after 40 years?

Morris was using Canon for over 3 decades and was an Explorer of Light for many years. He was apparently stripped several years ago of that title but has kept that very quiet. According to Morris, as CHG mentioned, the AF on the D5/D850 is superior to Canon's for BIF and it's immediately noticable within 5 minutes of use by an experienced photographer. He says that he prefers Canon for stills. I suspect that will change with extended usage with the D850. Canon doesn't offer anything capable of shooting 9 fps at 46 megapixel with a tracking system as accurrate with a moving subject. I'm sure the better DR is another obvious positive.

Nikon has aggressively adding superior features as of late to their higher end cameras to attract more users. A while back I remember reading that strategy was going to be employed with the sagging revenue in sales. Unfortunately Canon has little reason to innovate because they are at the top of the heap. I don't know if that mentality will change or not. Despite their sagging innovation, they continue to increase the market share. I have been checking Amazon on a weekly basis key wording "best selling DSLR's" and since the D850 has been released, Canon's 5DIV & 6DII continue to slide in position. Before then, Canon held the higher numbers in FF sales.

Strangely, the added features are only requested by the techno nerds which amounts to a very small market share. Canon is also expanding their company acquisitions and apparently after consuming several medical companies have continued to profit measurably. Canon's CEO has admitted that they are lacking innovation and will change but as others wonder, maybe that speech was meant to appease the shareholders.

The 5Ds/r II is rumored to be released in 2018. It will be interesting to see if Canon responds to technology shift. In the past, they have been very concerned with cannibalizing their product lines. Nikon has changed that methodology with the D850 which in many ways negates owning a D500. It's a wait and see at this point.

I'm one of those pinned into Canon products. I'm deeply invested in glass and selling 10 L lenses would be financially irresponsible. Besides, I'm comfortable with Canon's intuitive menu system, superb L glass, color science and unmatched CPS service. I'm now concentrating on making better images by experience and post work expertise. I can only blame myself if my images suck. Let's see how Canon responds. I just hope they wisely make choices that will appease the general public and not become a stagnant Kodak. We know what happened there.

I think the Canon CEO's comments about making innovation a company priority will pay dividends. Maybe not in 2018 but surely by the 2020 Olympics in Japan. They've watched Sony and Nikon encroach on their 30-year EOS-based top position. Don't count Goliath out of the game just yet ...

Because Professionals who shoot Canon are getting frustrated because Nikon and Sony have leaped over them in technological developments, and the ability to bring product to market.
Pros can have GAS too.

Naturally any company that concentrates on the mass market will have the majority of market share.

Did you mean to say 3 N's? (It's been annoying me too for some time. "Cannon" And I was in the artillery!)

Does this mean that all his Canon shooting mates, by that I mean all those he’s worked in conjunction with on producing technical and work flow guides including DPP will have to change too. Or will he suddenly find a whole load of new Nikon mates to work with.
I’ve followed him on Facebook for some while now and found his posts interesting and informative. This morning I’ve unfollowed him as a born again Nikonian.

For whatever reason, he personally found that one manufacturer was providing what he perceived he needed and the other wasn't. Why don't you ask him? All you get here is conjecture.

Amazing how in the weeks before the changeover he was extolling the virtues of Canon cameras, particularly the “best ever amazing Canon EOS 5Dmkiv” of which I believe he had two if not three.
You don’t change overnight unless there is ‘something’ behind the change or he had been considering it for some time, in which case he was stringing his Canon followers along. Cynical, I may be.

I don't know why he has changed to Nikon but I don't blame him. I have owned 8 x Canon cameras over the years, my last two being a 70D and 7D mark II. I now own a Nikon D500 and an Olympus EM1 mark II and, as far as I'm concerned, both are better than any current Canon: except for the 1DX mark II. I doubt I will ever return to the Canon brand.

Nikon has gone to a separate operating chip just for focusing. Nikon has put it on the D5, D500, and the D850. It is extremely fast and extremely accurate.
