I had to chuckle Ted when you said " robert's your cousins brother"...of course its " bobs your uncle" which roughly translates as "done and dusted" (that's not brit slang as well is it?). But a some of the brit "slang" that the author uses is from the London (Cockney)area and not said or said in a different way in other parts of britain.

Yes Billy they most probably were black and white but as you say over the years have slowly changed blue. But anyway they are to be treasured as they show a time so different to ours, just think those bairns have grown up and had children of their own and most probably been dead for years!

I asked a local lad about them and even he couldn't fill me in as to who or why they were made, they must have been made for grinding some kind of corn but that area is mainly moorland fit only for rearing sheep. Anyway how the hell did they get them down (it was a steep and rough terrain all the way down) and the weight of them must have been in tons!...I doubt we will ever know. As an afterthought, perhaps they thought they had a market for them and then found it too difficult to transport them and just left them (I would love one of them in my garden!)

Two of these photo's show abandoned Mill stones (counted 22) left lying about high up in Upper Teesdale. They must have been there for a long time because a couple were just showing above ground. Below the Quarry was an old abandoned farmhouse with this rusting farm implement just left there!!

Thanks to you all for your comments. This museum is a delight to walk round, and nearby is Timothy Hackworth's house, he was an early rail engineer. a rail line (original) runs from near to his house down to the main sheds, and if your prepared to wait (long queues in the summer)they have various engines (Dominion of Canada)was one, running up and down the line. Also they take in Loco's from all over the world (some in a dreadful condition) and restore them as best they can. This museum is a lot smaller than its big brother at York, but they are both a photographers dream.

I didn't have a clue until I asked my wife, she remembers her dad coming out with posers like that.

Yes, we walked from Cow Green Reservoir past Cauldron snout (Englands largest Cataract falls(river tees) and past Birkdale farm which is supposed to be Englands highest farm. Then over wild moorland for about 8 miles...but well worth it even though we were caught out by a short snowstorm!!
