MacOS 13.4 is old. 13.6.1 is the latest version of Ventura for most Macs. Some will require 13.6.2, which will only install if your Mac requires it.

I assume you are a subscriber to Adobe Photography Plan. The current version of Lightroom Classic is 13.0.1. When installed, it will automatically save a NEW copy of your catalog in the new format, and keep your old version 12 catalog. 13.0.1 runs fine on Ventura 13.6.1.

I'm waiting for MacOS 14.2 before I upgrade to Sonoma. I like the first couple of point revisions to shake out most of the bugs and patch most security holes, before I board the ship.

After the first couple of point upgrades, it is a good idea to install ALL the point upgrades for your current system, as they are released. They usually fix security holes. They often add or refine convenience features. The same goes for all other Apple software.

Same plan goes for all software period regardless of vendor.

Adobe has an excellent track record with the subscription plans. The Lightroom Queen is a reliable third party thumbs up for when to update releases for all flavors of Lr.

With that said I avoid beta releases because by definition they are use at your risk. Operating systems have a use by date by which they are no longer supported. When they tell you it is no longer supported believe them.

I got curious about the price difference for an imported/grey market Canon R5 on Abe's of Maine website, it's selling for $2729.00 and the R5 American warranty version is around $3399.00, that's a savings of $670.00. Mine has the US warranty.

Abe’s of Maine has the worst reputation of all sellers. Do not buy anything from them.

This only applies to HDD but not to SDD.

The legacy of rotating magnetic drives, HDD, created issues that are simply not present in solid state memory, SSD. Fragmentation and the need for defrag being one of them. The physical location of a segment does not affect the access time for either read or write. Also low level formatting is not necessary or meaningful for solid state memories and formatting simply clears the file allocation tables so repeated formatting has no effect other than a small amount of extra wear.

No need to defrag an SSD - just wasting some of the limited write/erase cycles.

True but I believe if you ask Windows to defrag a SSD it just does nothing.

For any Canon R5 shooters: If I shoot only stills to the SD card in my R5 (video to the CFExpress), would it cause any issues to not buy v90 cards, but instead SDXC II V60 cards? For shooting stills, how much impact would that have on shooting bursts for example? I'm sure some, but is it with the extra $$ for a V90 vs V60 cards if you mostly shoot individual shots and only occassionaly shoot burts? How much if any difference? (Trying to decide whether to jump on a Veterans' day sale on high capacity Lexar cards that are SDXC II v60. I know there are differences in what a V90 will support for video, but would I really notice any big difference if I used V60 just for stills? Anyone have experience shooting with both? (I currently have 128GB SDXC II v90 (300MB/s) card in my SD slot, but tempted to bay another card that's a good price but v60, not V90. Will I notice much difference for stills, burst shots, etc)? (I shoot RAW mostly)

No, it would not create any kind issues for you. The camera will just slow down to the speed of the card. Cameras have a buffer to all accommodate bursts of exposures faster than card can accept. That buffer is relatively large in recent cameras.

If a camera does not conform to the SD Association’s SD Standard they cannot use thee trademark and they are too stupid to remain in business. This is true of all memory card types in use today. Even Sony which has a long history of going their propriety way. Do you have any Beta tapes?

Thank you for sharing that information

Nice colors! You might have mentioned this before but tell me again, what model of Smartphone is your daughter shooting with.

This is what the info shows. Shot from a minivan at speed on I5 somewhere between Exit 111 and airport traveling at speed. Likely taken through passengers window. I5 is pretty rough and noisy hence vibration visible in photo.

This shot is less than 24 hours old. She texted a third shot which was terrible. I still have an active license of the Topaz stuff which I haven’t found worthwhile. At her suggestion maybe I will do a farewell update and pass these through it to see what happens. I don’t have a stable workflow for Apple phone to Lightroom Classic so I could start. She is also an Adobe user so maybe she can get me a good copy to work from. Viva Dropbox!

Those volcanic peaks really stand out. When we were in Wasilla in ‘99 Denali stood out impressively in the distance. When got off the train and the day until we went on you could clearly see the few thousand feet under the clouds. I was told Denali has the greatest rise from its base to peak. Unless you count Mauna Kea which claims the greatest rise from its base on the ocean floor.

But when she’s out, it’s amazing. A number of years ago we flew out of Sea-Tac on a morning flight and it was a clear morning at sunrise. The pilot took advantage of it and flew fairly close to Ranier, just about level with the peak. It was amazing, a real treat.

With the double peaks she is easily identified from the air. Not all are. Many many years ago when Mt St. Helens was acting up on a business trip to Portland our pilot was granted permission to do a little jog so both sides could see the mountain. When leaving we ask around the airport which mountain we could see was Mt. St. Helens. Nobody knew. About a week later I bet everyone else knew!

Beautiful. Mt. Ranier is always happy to pose for a photo. That’s a beautiful sky. Nice catch.

Actually, she is pretty shy. Hiding in the clouds much of the time.

My daughter took these shots from I5 on way to airport with family. She wasn’t driving 😏. I just cropped and straightened them to remove power lines and Jersey barriers.

I don’t like to use phones because of the lack of a useful viewfinder and control. But…

The manufacturers of strictly monochrome cameras are using the 4 dot color matrix to create a longer tonal range in monochrome, and maybe eke out a bit more sharpness by eliminating the filter layer. They don’t sell a lot of these, but they sell enough to keep making them. And these aren’t cheap.

I believe the actually do not have the Bauer array for color which more or less doubles the resolution; increases the sensitivity by eliminating filter loss and accordingly improves dynamic range. But they do not produce any color data for Pp so the physical filters are again required for the full range of monochrome effects. I wonder if Lightroom/Photoshop even accept them?

First, uninformed, reaction:
How many watts/second does the electronics consume?
Battery size and life? - Batteries/second?

How and why?

Has marketing told engineering and manufacturing about this?

I want to shoot a local landmark using a CPL and an FL W filter. Please understand:

1. I don't have the FL-W yet, so I can't experiment, and;
2. I will have a very short time to work, so I want to get it right from the beginning..

So the question: does it matter which filter is in front of the other?

Thanks,

Ben

Ben, see what happens when you ask a straightforward question. My answer is no. But it since putting the the CPL filter on the top allows easer adjustment of the CFL then put it there.

You mentioned you don’t want to do PP with a computer then don’t. If you weaken and want to see what PP is all about white balance is an excellent place to start. Sometime shoot a photo with JPEG + raw and try it. Since I have used Lightroom Classic almost exclusively for a dozen years I can’t be certain but I believe all raw processors in a similar. You pick any nice sounding setting as a starting point grab the slider and see what happens. There is no “right answer” except for many professionals. Often a tiny push one way or the other can make a big difference. And sometimes a radical push can completely change the mood.

Be cautious because you are on the slippery slope to the rabbit hole of masking to tune up objects.
