Seeking help from all you knowledgeable and helpful UHHr's. How can I tether my D7100 to my iPad7 so I can view the images immediately during photoshoots on the iPad's retina monitor? The camera's little LCD screen cannot be relied upon to judge whether the image quality is satisfactory. What brand or type of cable could do the job satisfactorily and which camera connector port should I use? (ie mini USB or HDMI ?). I would think the wireless option could avoid a lot of trouble with wires, but is the wireless system easy to set up? Which software would I need and how do I install such software on the D7100 and then set it up and activate it?
I am interested in any and all ideas while I think this through. I'm just trying to optimize my evaluation of the images as I shoot. Thank you all.

I've used QDSLR with my D7200 and Android tablet. Its wireless and not difficult to set up. You should check that out if its available for your iPad.

My SmugMug account is coming up for renewal and I am at the portfolio level but thinking about downgrading as sales have not been what I expected. I shoot a lot of sports for the high schools but sales haven't been that great as teenagers are happy to take a screen shot of a photo with a watermark to show to their friends. I want to keep my photo's backed up online besides the backup on my external hard drives. Thinking about going Backblaze or to Amazon's backup service. Wondering what works for others out there in photo land.

If you're just looking for backup then check out the recent reviews on tomsguide. I went with iDrive and started my first upload yesterday. Uploading via hard drive is limited right now due to covid-19. They are offering a 95% off sale right now (that's 5TB @ $3.48 for 1st year). This fits my needs right now and price can't be beat. I also back up to local HDs that I swap monthly. Cloud backup is 2nd level for me. Hope I never need it. :)

I am hoping CHG_CANON will weigh in on this.

It occurs to me there are two structures in Lightroom the folder structure and the collections. I find it a bit confusing. I have a hierarchy of folders that i maintain. Because I don’t trust software. Sometimes it goes away. I want to have a basic structure that allows me to find my images if that happens again.

Using LR to maintain the folder hierarchy is easy to do. However it seems to the that LR is really designed to put the images in a folder then to use collections to organize them. There is more flexibility that way because the collections contain links. For example I can have the same image in two collections. But I cannot have the same image in two folders unless I duplicate it.

So my question is what other advantages are there to using collections? Does the LR cloud version use collections in the same manner? Does using collections make it easier to sync LR classic to LR cloud?

Collections, collections sets and virtual copies are powerful organizational tools I can not live without. I had tried a few different organizational methods without great success until I watched Scott Kelby's video on his Simplified Lightroom Image Management (SLIM) system . It helps me stay organized and immediately reduced my culling time after import. As with any system it did need a little tweaking for my own use. I suggest you take a look at that before deciding on any system. I believe you can get access to KelbyOne right now for a very low monthly fee during this pandemic.

I have an universal lens on Nikon 7100. Not great, buy enough for me . Now I have found it does not focus fast enough or stops focusing. Store repair technician told me it is related to photographed area sharpness -> no. First it took the time longer than normal. Then it stopped focusing at wide setting - I had to zoom a little . After that I found the camera turn to vertical (portrait) does not focus. But the same "zoom" in horizontal (landscape) mode works .
I have cleaned contacts, but it did not help. Before I send it to repair (?) does anyone knows the reason/cure for the problem?

Thank you for the hint Miro

I purchased same lens for my D7000 back in 2015. Last year it had a focusing issue and I sent it back to Tamron for repair under warranty. If I remember correctly it took about 3 weeks to get it back. It has been focusing fine since then. If yours is still under warranty I suggest Tamron for repair. They have a 6 year warranty period so you might be in luck.

That's what the HSL tool does, but the adjustments are global so you can't target just specific areas or objects. But you can target specific colours.

(The HSL tool is in the bar that has HSL / Color / B&W on it. Either the HSL section or the Color section give access to hue, saturation and luminance adjustments for red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, purple and magenta).

I know. I use it a lot. It would just be nice to have it also as a local adjustment.

Has anyone done business with MPB. I got a quote from them to buy my equipment and I don't know how reputable they are. Any help would be appreciated !!

I sold a lens and body to them and also purchased a lens separately. Sell prices were a little lower than I had hoped for but you must expect that of a reseller. Lens purchase was reasonably priced and was exactly as described. I will do business with them again. I haven't heard of any complaints about them. Not surprised all their reviews are good ones.

Our local market hasn't had TP any time I've been there this past week, which was almost daily! Sporadic outages of other items also - eggs, pasta, cheese, bottled water, etc.. These usually only last a day or two. I can't fathom it. What are people thinking?

There is an ad on tv for some drug called rinvoq. There is a woman sitting in the back of a jeep taking pictures of horses. She has her right hand on the focus/zoom. She has her left hand on the shutter release. Can someone tell me what camera this is or has the video been reversed?

The vehicle goes from left hand drive in the beginning to right hand drive at the end. I'm guessing ads are reversed all the time, we just never notice.

I am planning to enter photos in local (WA) state fairs - and the photos need to be "mounted on picture mat board no thicker than 1/8 inch. No foam core or gator board." I used to have my photos mounted by the places I got my photos printed, but now that I have my own printer, I have to do this myself.

I watched a number of videos - and seen both the "spray the photo with 3M 77" and using the self adhesive mat boards.

Any recommendation on where to buy mat boards for this purpose? Any recommendation on techniques? (Spray vs self adhesive.)

Thanks...

I use goldenstateart.com for my mat boards(usually 16x20 or 14x18 for 11x14 prints). They come with backing boards and clear plastic sleeves. Depending on quantity they should run about $2 ea. plus shipping. My last order was for 20 and shipping was $17 to NY. So $3.70 ea. is quite reasonable. The only issue I've had was with the website itself. Last time I ordered it would not let me enter my shipping address which I had to straighten out on the phone. I've never had any issues with the actual orders or shipping.

I am chairperson for monthly print competitions in our local club and I see many mounting methods, some good, some not so much. First, I always use linen tape to hinge the boards. As for mounting the print it depends on use. For contests I have used Scotch double faced removable tape. Two pieces about a third of the way in, at the top underside of print does the trick. Lately I have tried painters tape on the front side of top unprinted edge. Its cheaper, easier to apply and also removable. Neither of these tapes is archival to my knowledge. I also have been using rolled pieces of painters tape to hold the mat boards together after the print is mounted. Using this method you can easily remove the print. For framed prints that are for sale I use the T-hinging method using linen tape. You can find videos of that method online. I have never tried any adhesives.

Hope this helps.

How are you cataloging your images? I've got the Adobe products through the subscription service. LR does a great job, but I find it cumbersome and half the time still can't find what I'm looking for. I shoot a lot but not thousands on a yearly basis. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have a KelbyOne subscription and I found Scott's SLIM (Simplified Lightroom Image Management) system works best for me after trying several other methods. It is based on having a few top level categories (10 or so) and then sub-folders as needed. You then duplicate this structure as collection sets and create collections under the bottom set. You then work within those collections(see example below). It is the basis for my workflow in LR. I also use some keywording to help find things across multiple collections. Collections (and virtual copies) are powerful tools in LR once you get familiar with them.

Example folder:
_Sports/Soccer/GF Varsity vs LG 10152019/<Import all your images for this shoot here>

Corresponding collections and collection sets:
_Sports/Soccer/GF Varsity vs LG 10152019/Full Shoot (All images for this shoot)
_Sports/Soccer/GF Varsity vs LG 10152019/Picks (First round of culling)
_Sports/Soccer/GF Varsity vs LG 10152019/Selects (Second round of culling, to be PP'd)

Additional collection:
Projects/GF Varsity 2019/Book (Images from multiple Sports collections to be included in a book)

I suggest you look into the Kelby SLIM system via google.

Hope this helps more than it confuses :)
