I have an universal lens on Nikon 7100. Not great, buy enough for me . Now I have found it does not focus fast enough or stops focusing. Store repair technician told me it is related to photographed area sharpness -> no. First it took the time longer than normal. Then it stopped focusing at wide setting - I had to zoom a little . After that I found the camera turn to vertical (portrait) does not focus. But the same "zoom" in horizontal (landscape) mode works .
I have cleaned contacts, but it did not help. Before I send it to repair (?) does anyone knows the reason/cure for the problem?

Thank you for the hint Miro

It has to be a defective lens and the bad news is that to repair it could be more expensive than what you paid for it. Check with Tamron and they can give you an approximate quote on the cost of repairs.
I have a lens that Nikon introduced in 2004, the excellent 18-70 f3.5-4.5 for DX bodies. After many years of good service the AF began to fail till it became useless. Nikon will not repair it since it has been long discontinued. Cost of repair from an authorized repair station was much higher than buying a used copy in good condition.

For many years of my life I have used all manual lenses and still I have some of them. Because I have no use for this zoom with action photography I simply focus manually. One of the big advantages of using a lens manually happens to be when the lens needs some type of adjustment to its AF. No need for adjustments when the lens is used manually.

Good luck with your lens....next time buy from a reputable dealer.

Sorry for your problem but if you purchased it new please contact Tamron and they may repair it for free as this lens has Tamron's 6-year warranty. This lens has had this issue from the get-go and many others have had the same or similar focus issue. Try Tamron and don't listen to the repairman. Tamron will give you the definitive answer. If you bought it used you are out of luck. Hope this helps.

As pointed out, this lens should have a six-year guarantee. I'd give Tamron a call. Good luck.

Someone here has suggested the Nikon 18-200 AF-S, VR lens. This lens is a pretty good all around lens and it was made by Nikon for use with their DX camera bodies.
It has also been suggested to contact Tamron, which was my original suggestion with a previous post in this thread.

I have worn out at least 3 Nikon 18-55 kit lenses. A lot of lenses work great while they work, but after awhile, they just up and quit. Time to get another.

I have the same problem with my Tamron 18-400. Sent it to Tamron for fixing and lens was returned to me with the message there was nothing wrong with the lens! It is now my least used lens.

I had some similar issues with a Tamron 18-270 lens. That was years ago and the maladies were intermittent. Tamron, as usual, was a treat to deal with and promptly exchanged the lens. I no longer have either of those lenses, but remember they were sharp when they worked and that Tamronbacked their lenses very well.

I purchased same lens for my D7000 back in 2015. Last year it had a focusing issue and I sent it back to Tamron for repair under warranty. If I remember correctly it took about 3 weeks to get it back. It has been focusing fine since then. If yours is still under warranty I suggest Tamron for repair. They have a 6 year warranty period so you might be in luck.

Regards,

Alan

Curious. What do you mean by "universal lens"?

FWIW - I have the Sigma 18-300 and never had any problem with it. It also is less expensive than the Tamron. If yours can't be repaired, check out the Sigma.
