It turns out I have some free time coming up this week so I'm thinking of packing up my gear and heading down to Joshua Tree. Recent reports on DesertUSA.com indicate the wild flower bloom is a 6 on a 10 point scale. Weather is sunny and temperatures are running high 70s to low 80s, so I'm anticipating the bloom will continue to get better as the week progresses. I'm fairly familiar with Joshua Tree NP, having photographed there a number of times, but would be interested in getting information from anybody who has been there recently and has info on specific areas where there appears to be good bloom. Thanks.

Not recently, I like the walk around the inside of Hidden Valley.
I'm heading to Antelope Valley, there are lots of other places besides the preserve that might be good, particularly an Ag plot further west and north of the preserve, maybe around 205th street IIRC. You have to kind of try different roads, there's no direct path, but if the bloom is on, you just look for about a 5 acre patch of bright orange.

Also, the area just to the southwest of the preserve, there's an LA water reservoir, some beautiful hills.

Another area that might be nice, the drive up the valley to the Owens Peak wilderness, just north of Indian Wells on 14/395

Would I need my 70-200 or would a 24-70 due it. or 40 pancake and 70-200

Wide-angle or macro only. In fact, if it's a Canon 24-70, it's near - macro already, you can take really nice flower closeups. Rent a 16-35 ff, or 10-24(?) for crop-sensor.
Watch out for rattlesnakes. It's warming up, they're getting active. Don't put your hand into anything that you can't see all the way into really well.

I'm going to Antelope Valley next week. The last time I was there, two years ago, there was an incredible bloom. Plenty of places to go besides the preserve. If you spot a big orange patch up against the mountains to the northwest, it's worth it to try to figure out how to get there, you'll have to drive on some dusty roads. There is some kind of Department of Agriculture plot of several acres that have outrageous blooms. Lastly, don't cross fence lines, you'll regret it.

You'll need a computer to hook the portable hard drive to in order to utilize it as a back-up each night.

No, you don't. I have a WD My Passport Wireless Pro. Can operate completely standalone, or connected to a computer. And, the reason I bought it, is that it will back up the new files on an SD card, it has an SD card slot.

Me too! The problem is they are targeting the masses by stating that my Windows computer has issues. I say, "that is great but I only own Mac computers." "Click" is the only response I get as they promptly hang up.

Geez, I get the dumber ones. I tell them my computer is a Mac. They tell me to press the Start button......

Hi I welcome an education about getting my (outsourced) prints back without color saturation.. (Especially in the reds). I use a calibrated monitor. Use LR. shoot in RAW. Use alienBees mono lights. Set camera to flash and RGB color space.
Is it the monitor? The camera? The RAW converters?
I feel my 7D camera, even though shooting in RAW, somehow saturates color?
I suspect that LR may create a JPEG image from the raw that is biased toward the reds? There is a marked difference between Photoshops JPEG and LR JPEG!
I don't understand why the representative JPEG in LR always is over saturated.
My solution to this problem is to adjust the LR, WB temperature slider, to the blue side before out sourcing to my color lab.
I shoot using the 7D histogram, & adjust exposure to under full right, by a little bit.
From what I have researched all manufactures cameras are susceptible to saturation.

It's been a while since I even shot my 7D, but I wonder what would happen if you made color profiles using Color Checker Passport, and had Lightroom apply them? I haven't tried it myself, yet.

I took one of your shots that I downloaded, "564266-dsc_7150.jpg" and a quick adjustment to see what effect correcting the compensation back to where it would be if it was zeroed when the shot was taken, and also with the auto correct in ACR. Here are the original and the 2 adjusted copies for you to compare. The first adjusted image just had the exposure increased by +1.33, and the second is just with the "Auto" adjust in ACR. The auto adjust bumped the exposure up to +3.30. This would be similar to what you would have gotten if you say the first shot was too dark and used the exposure compensation adjusted to +3 instead of the -1.33 that was set.

Now a quick adjustment layer with just the TV showing through the mask to tone the TV back down
Starting to look like a great shot!

The Topaz filters do have an opacity slider hidden in the adjustments, I think would sort those out for you.

thanks, I will try it out.

Lightroom has Vibrance and Clarity controls. Simple sliders. Vibrance is kind of like saturation and Clarity compresses or expands the histogram to get more contrast. Don't know what ON1 has that would be similar.

What I'm really looking for is something that modulates all the changes, all at once, like stacking the changed layer on top of the original and reducing the opacity.
Which is what I guess I'll do...I wonder if I can write an action or macro in ON1 to do that?

ON1 has those individual sliders.

Very nice look. How's the tone? I like those old fiddles that kind of sound like molasses on a summer day on the high end, but still got some punch in the bass.

MA is a small state)) Look up Jane Rothfield, I jammed with her once, she's a great player, many styles.

No, I'm not talking about heated rhetoric.

When using ON1 or Topaz Adjust, either as a plugin, or standalone, I sometimes find a preset that I like as a starting point. But it's a little too over the top, too harsh, saturated, whatever.
What I would normally do in Photoshop is put the adjustment in a layer, then dial down the opacity. Often this is very close the final effect I want.

Particularly in standalone mode, this is a cumbersome process in ON1, unless I'm doing it wrong. I go to the layers, duplicate the base layer, apply the preset, but then have to go back to develop mode to dial down the opacity. This makes it more difficult to experiment with different presets.

I guess what I want is a global effects slider that lets me dial down or up the changes applied by the preset.

Is this possible to do in a simple way?

Thanks,
Wes

No, but I've been going to Old-Time week at Swannanoa, also in NC, for over 10 years. The only problem is that there are only 24 hours in the day, and three of them are wasted on sleep..

It may turn out to be your one and only opportunity, then. I used to go to a CW bar outside of Boulder. People who didn't follow the protocols often found themselves escorted outside, not gently, by the offensive line of the CU football team.
