Looking at Erich's lovely images taken from the High Line park in Manhattan, I was reminded of this image I took back in 2019.

The rectilinear forms are an apartment building across the street from the zig zag forms reflected in its windows; the zigzags were designed by the late great architect Zaha Hadid. Both are just west of the High Line; this portion is roughly in the Chelsea neighborhood. Colors are boosted a bit - well, quite a bit - in post.

I suppose I owe apologies to the memory of Ms. Hadid.

A nice shot, Erich.

FYI, the High Line Park opened in 2009; much of the history can be found at

When I open a folder in Adobe Bridge, I usually see something like "95 items, 8 hidden." What does this mean? Why are some items hidden? Can they be un-hidden, or revealed?

I get confused with this subject. In my system, ACR is locked to Photoshop. The only way ACR gets updated is when Photoshop updates and it is automatic.

How do you update ACR separately from Phototshop?

(I have an almost new Samsung S23. I am delighted with how well it works with the Lightrooms and Photoshop!)

I open the Adobe Creative Cloud app that comes with PS & Lightroom. I click Apps, and then I click Updates, and it shows my apps, when they were updated, and which "New updates" are available. I have the most basic subscription, and my apps are Bridge (Beta), Photoshop (Beta), "Camera Raw," Bridge, LR Classic, LR, and PS. Periodically, it shows that Camera Raw has a new update available, and offers a button to click, "Update." Hope that's clear.

Yes, I think the bagged fruit should be like that, with the smaller stuff tucked up to it and the vase close to the raised area.

Thanks for the suggestion. A friend also suggested a smaller field, which your tucking would achieve, to better display the textures that I'm in the habit of focusing on. I'm gonna give it a try.

Well, getting more leaves was not happening, as we weren't taking another day to go back to Catoctin NP, and they'd be pretty different by the time we got there anyway. And arranging them more randomly seems to be beyond my capability. Then I saw an image on flickr where someone had hung some leaves on a clothes line, which triggered my decision to try an oppositional strategy I've been practicing for nearly 80 years - just ask my dear departed parents. Instead of more nearly random, I went with very orderly. Let me know what you think.

Hopefully, the very opposite of random

Excellent picture of items left forgotten on the shelf and for a goodly amount of time. I love the classic, old masters feel to this image. It would be great if you could describe your lighting set up to obtain that low key look. It’s perfect for these kinds of still lifes and would be very useful for portraiture as well. I struggle with getting good indoor lighting.

A visit to your Flickr pages indicates you have an affinity for plants that are, shall we say, past their prime as subjects. Good work there.

Thanks for your interest, Stan. My main light is a Raya Octabox (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1078572-REG/raya_octa_fluorescent_7_socket.html), set up on the left, just a little in front of the table, and a secondary light on the right, again just a little in front of the table, aimed at the bottom of the paper bag, but also illuminating the right side of the flowers in the vase. However, I suspect that a good bit of what you like in the image may be due to what was done in post. To illustrate, I opened the raw file in ACR, made no adjustments, brought it into Photoshop and again made no adjustments, and exported it, to show you what it looked like before it was processed. I hope nobody prefers this version

Can’t say I’m overkeen on the composition - I’d shove everything on the left up to the right and bunch stuff a bit more. I do like the subject matter and processing, which compliment each other very nicely. Have a continuous tumble of fruit from the bag and jam everything up to it and it will be a winner.

Thanks for your feedback. Do you mean you want to see a steady stream of stuff falling from the bag to the table?

Well, at least that's the argument presented here, and it strikes me as somewhat convincing:

I think it's a great turnaround for the classic still life! Lots of credit for the concept, and the clutter it caused cleaning up. You did do the clean-up...didn't you?

Glad you like the concept; an especially encouraging compliment, coming from an art teacher. As for the clean-up ... ahh ... uhm ... well ... not yet. After all, pursuant to the input of my colleagues, I will have to re-shoot.

You have captured the realism of what a classic painter sees by the time they have finished a slow-drying oil painting. I like the image a great deal.

I too commit the dry in the frig sin.

I agree with Linda about the clutter on the left... one or two as if by chance, but too many take away from the photo's theme, random chance of decay.

Suggest bringing the bottom up to the bark on the rough sawed wood, we do not need to peek at what is below.

Thanks for your very kind assessment of my attempt to look like a classic painter, which was precisely my goal. And I'm happy to know I'm not alone in fridge abandonment. I'll give a shot at cropping up, but I'm unsure about the plank sitting on the edge of the frame; maybe it will fuffice to just make the stuff underneath a touch darker.

I am often drawn to the unique beauty of dying or dead flowers. I haven't seen as many photos of past-prime fruit, but looking closely at their textures here, I find a similar photogenic beauty.

The color palette, textures and tones of the props, and the lighting are perfect for these subjects IMO. I particularly like the feeling of the fruit having tumbled out of the bag onto the cloth.

I might try changing the look of the smallest elements on the left; they feel a little too deliberately placed. Perhaps they're not needed at all, in fact.

Thanks so much for this topic, Sam, including the chuckle-inducing opening paragraph

Thank you, Linda from Yakima, Maine. (You know, Google maps can't seem to find that location. ) I appreciate your review of the things I've done pretty well with, and I'm glad you saw the bag spilling. You may recall an image of leaves I posted awhile back, where I got comments about the leaves not being arranged with sufficient randomness. I worked with that image through several iterations, finally concluding that purposefully arranged randomness is a target I'm not well-equipped to hit. (I'll post my solution to that problem sooner or later.) If I remove all the nuts, leaves, and fallen blossoms, I might lose some of my sense of chaos, and I think I might have to crop in a bit from the left, and there'd still be a little too much empty table top for my taste. Still, I'll fool with that arrangement one more time and see if I can get that well-ordered disorder. Maybe I'll try scooping up all the nuts and shells and just spilling them out with my eyes closed.
