Corel warning

I bought some gear from Adorama last week. When it arrived, there was a free copy of several Corel products (Photo-Video-Art Suite). I decided to check it out and downloaded it with the Keys provided. I began with Paint Shop Pro X9. As soon as I opened it, my display went nuts. The display had an identical double image, one clear on top, the other was a hazy, greyed out version of the upper, but it partially covered the upper images. There were two cursors. I deleted the program with great difficulty (it was nearly impossible to click on things since many selections were impossible to differentiate and then deciding which of the two cursors were effective). That didn't solve the problem. I then ran REVO uninstalled which searches for left over strings concealed in files. Again, no help. Finally, a trip to the Geek Squad and a full wipe of the hard drive and re installation of Windows 10 got it resolved. I suggest you consider installing these products carefully before putting them on your computer (this was an HP laptop). I lost all of my files including a boat load of photos that had not yet been backed up. I'll never look at Corel again, free or otherwise.

. . . . Welcome to the club.... Many Many Many years ago I started using COREL. . . A GREAT PRODUCT.
Then it changed hands or distributor... & started to demand a monthly $$ cost for use of CORR ELL. I don't have that kind of $$ to lay out each month. GONE WITH THE WIND... AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED. THEIR IS NO WAY, THAT I HAVE DISCOVERED, TO TERMINATE THEIR ADVERTISING OR 'PIMPING' ITEMS FROM POPPING UP EVERY SO OFTEN. DON'T WASTE UR' TIME TRYING TO CONTACT THEM. . . THEY KEEP THE "PIMPING" GAME UP. . . . ''''''I SEE THEIR JUNK MAIL'''''' I DUMP THEIR JUNK MAIL.... and merrily go on my way. . .

Using the System Restore utility might've resolved the issue. This utility has saved my bacon more than once. It reverses system changes, including installation of software.

I can strongly recommend that all users who use the Microsoft operating system learn how to employ System Restore.

Note that the user can describe the amount of storage space to allow for System Restore. This space determines how many restore points can exist for reversion to an earlier system state.

Is it possible that the version of the software you downloaded was compromised by malware in some way? I've never experienced the kind of issue you describe.

I use two versions of PaintShop Pro, the latest being PSP X5, with zero problems.

We have a number of PSP users on UHH, it will be interesting to see if others have had a similar experience.

If you got the software through Adorama it could be worth giving them a call. Adorama is a good company, and if there is a problem they may wish to know.

I have been using Corel Paintshop for 7 years now and have never had any issues with it or any of their other products. More likely it was a glitch in your Windows 10 or a video driver issue. Just because the software did not run properly on your machi edoes not mean the software is faulty. They would not be in business very long if it was. I am not sure is 9 is compatible with Win10 either.

My experience is different.
I currently use Paint Shop Pro X9.
Have used many previous versions over the years.
I buy directly from Corel.
I don't pay a monthly fee. Don't remember Corel ever asking for a monthly fee.
I pay a little extra to get the program delivered on a hard disc.
Only problems I have, are operator problems......
I plan to keep using to keep using Paint Shop Pro.

As long as the Operator doesn't get distracted?

My problem (may be due to my getting older) is forgetting how I did something.

I find that many programs get gnarled because of the many OS versions running. The hiccoughs are not necessarily alike. It has been the norm to put out programs testing-incomplete with the idea of fixing non-documented events down the road. And the new fixes sometimes unfix old fixes.

Query to OP. Before running the program, did you check for updates? Sometimes that helps avoid glitches.

One computer Peter Principle to keep in mind. "If something can go wrong, it will." So save before sailing on.

Tom, I see nothing boring about the warning Stan gave whether the problem was created by Corel, by malware or by being ‘soft-jacked’ by some money hungry software distributor. The text of Stan’s message was both succinct and thorough. He simply recounted an adverse and expensive problem he encountered. I agree with the Peterff who suggested contacting Adorama (UHH member HelenOster is our Adorama ombudsperson). Perhaps this post just struck you the wrong way while your coffee was brewing this morning, but I’d give Stan a break. — Ralph

I currently use paint shop pro 2018 and I have used Corel products for what seems like decades and have never had your or any problem with any of their products. They have always run smoothly for me. I use PSP in conjunction with Photoshop and light room. I wonder if you ever considered talking to Corel about the issue

The problem with Geek Squad, and other services like them, is that they usually don't try to save files prior to wiping your computer. Up to that point, your photos, documents, etc were recoverable. If you have any friends that are a little computer tech savvy, you or them, can download a bootable copy of Linux Mint to a USB drive, boot your computer from the stick (Windows systems, I don't know a thing about Apple) and copy your files off to another stick or a removable hard drive. The malware won't affect the Linux boot and your files will be fine unless they were infected by the malware or corrupted install, which generally is not the case.

This is just offered in the spirit of helping Hoggers somewhere down the road. If you have important "stuff" on your compromised system, don't just automatically let someone wipe the drive. Unless a drive is totally failed, you usually can recover your files.

Nope. Whatever happened when I downloaded the program, it also disabled system restore

Hey Tom! Thanks for your comment. I’m terribly sorry to hear that you’re in such bad shape that reading 3 paragraphs wears you out. I certainly hope your condition improves!
As for following your advice, I’m sorry to tell you that I choose not to. I prefer to tell my stories in my own way. What that means is that all of my posts will be too lengthy for you. I suggest you simply not read my comments. It seems to be a simple solution, and certainly more considerate of you.

I didn’t imply that the software was faulty. I have no idea what happened. It could have been a virus, a firmware problem, etc. I was simply relating my experience, which was clearly associated with the download in some way, and I suggested caution in choosing this software.
