I don't think my spouse understands that I need one tripod for with a gimbal for my big lens, one tripod for my macro rail, and one with my skytracker all by the door. I also don't think they will understand that I still need another tripod with a simple ball mount just for all other needs. What should I do?

Do like I do. Just buy it, put in with the other tripods, when asked, "I've had that all along," or, "when kept in close proximity, they multiply."

If necessary ask for forgiveness not permission.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have a brand of tripod that easily and quickly changes heads? My RRS has three screws that allow for quickly changing between a ball head and a gimbal. Likely other brands have this feature as well.

Most can have interchangeable heads. That’s not the goal. The goal is to have something ready to go right now. If they have the funds and it’s her passion, why not have multiple rigs setups?

If you're unfamiliar with Really Right Stuff, take a moment and visit their site and check the prices. Their products should more than satisfy a GAS attack ...

Thank you all for your suggestions, so far I like TBerwick's and szoot's the most and I'm sorry joer, that one is too expensive of an option. As far as interchangeable heads, szoot has my feelings there, the gimbal has the big lens on it and all have the same standard swiss tripod quick mounts and my cameras all have L brackets with the same mount cut into their base as do all my lenses with tripod mounts. Would take too long to change heads when the bird lands in the yard and then the butterfly.

No, must not go there, I buy a lot of my equipment on ebay, saves me some money. $1000+ for a tripod might get me the new spouse.

Add both RRS and Gitzo to your searches on ebay. There are plenty for resale. From here at UHH I learned about Gitzo after having gone with a RRS. For about a third of the price compared to a brand new RRS Versa II model, I found a used Gitzo G1352 MkII Carbon Fiber Professional every way as good as RRS. And with an RRS head on the Gitzo and with Arca-Swiss L-plates and lens plated on all my equipment, the simplicity and interchangeability you desire is achieved.

Find a wife who is a photographer.

I leave two tripods set up in my garage, one with a ball head and one with a gimbal. A few cameras with lenses attached sit by the door. It takes about 5 seconds to mount the camera/lens onto the tripod and much easier to then walk out the garage door.

The suggestion to get a new wife was dumb ... get a girlfriend.

The simplest answer is to buy ONE tripod with interchangeable top mounts so you can have as many heads as you want already mounted to plates, and simply change the tripod mount to whichever head you need at the time. It takes under 10 seconds to change heads that way, and you can have an unlimited number of mounts with heads attached at your disposal easily. I do this with my Gimbal head and my ball head as they are the only two heads I use regularly.

I started my collection with Gitzo that I still have, it has the gimbal on it, buy once is a good motto.
