I don't think my spouse understands that I need one tripod for with a gimbal for my big lens, one tripod for my macro rail, and one with my skytracker all by the door. I also don't think they will understand that I still need another tripod with a simple ball mount just for all other needs. What should I do?

The rule of 'Quid pro Quo' works in my house. That is Latin for - 'I get one, she gets two.'

Buy what you need; and hope for the best.

Over the years, I guess I've used the forgiveness over permission more than any, which usually leads to the equal or greater than reciprocal. Next on my list is getting a studio by putting in a two car garage, so easy and cheap to add a second floor studio, right?

I'd suggest that you have one really good tripod and put an Arca-Swiss FlipLock Quickset Device on it. Then put the appropriate Arca Swiss plate on each of the accessories you wish to use on it and your set.

Do what I did. Get them one at a time and make sure to treat the woman to some good times in between.

If the goal is to have something to go “right now,” she should not only have three tripods with appropriate heads but a camera and lens pre-mounted on each one.

Have 4 - one for Acra-Tech ball head, one for Nodal Ninja panorama head, another for Nodal Ninja's fisheye mount and one for a gimbal. Like the man said - want what I want when I want it ready to go. I'm not going to buy a 5th - for a movie head.

Sounds to me like you should just keep doing what you are doing! You don't say what gear you already have, besides the Gitzo tripod. But that suggests to me you like good quality. And it suggests you manage quite nicely with the reciprocals and everyone is happy! My only suggestion is to make sure all your tripods are adequate or better for supporting your gear. Otherwise, you are risking expensive cameras and lenses.

And if you want a garage, the second floor studio sounds like a great idea! Not cheap, though...

Wouldn't it make more sense to have a brand of tripod that easily and quickly changes heads? My RRS has three screws that allow for quickly changing between a ball head and a gimbal. Likely other brands have this feature as well.

You are not asking the most appropriate question.

Why do I have a spouse?

Actually a couple of solutions come to mind:

1) Dump the Spouse. Of course it will probably cost you a lot more than buying a few Tripods, so financially this may not be the best remedy!

2) Buy what you need and take the flack! Remember a good photographer always asks for forgiveness and never asks for permission!

3) Buy her off!! Get what you need and let her get something she has been wanting of approx. equal value. A bit of a strain on your budgets, but you have two happy clams living in the same house.

Be sure you let us know what you decide!
