The card reader can be bad if the card works fine in the camera and you can use the camera to download to computer.

Whoops I did not hit quote reply.

Not to worry. Problem is, the card reader has no problem with any of my other SD cards, just the one.

Samsung 64gb and 32gb non-micro cards. Now that Samsung only makes micro cards, Sandisk 64 and 32gb cards. Have some older, slower Lexer 16gb cards. Never had one go bad, but I copy to laptop's internal HDD, AND an external HDD. Only after I have two copies do I reformat card in camera.

I use a card reader to copy the SD card to the HDD's. This allows me to use TeraCopy (free on windows) to do the copy as it verifies each file copied with a CRC check.

I've heard that it's better to use full size SD cards rather than micro cards in your camera. Opinions?

Why would you use Micro Cards? ... They're more for mini devices, like Hand-Held PCs, and Cell-Phones - right?

If camera designers wanted you to use Micro Cards, they'd have made cameras with slots that size ....

I made the mistake of ordering a couple of Samsung cards off of eBay. Turned out they were counterfeit. *** The biggest tip off was they were made in China. Samsung cards are only made in Korea. Oh well!

You bat rastard! Why didn't you post this a month ago?!?! I got a "good deal" on a 5lot 64gb Samsung cards. ! worked OK, the next wouldn't finish formatting. I found a shareware fixit program on majorgeeks, and it said I had 16gb cards. *sigh* They formatted OK- but I ain't using them.

Probably counterfeit. I would toss them before you are tempted to give them one more try.

As SD cards have no moving parts and are just a network of solid state micro-transistors in a micro-wiring harness, I would venture most failures derive from damage to the external contacts. Crooked, careless insertion handling might be the most common cause. Its a two-way street - consider the contacts in your camera, too.

SD cards are flash memory or flash drives. What do you mean by "flash drive"?

Just a techno term meaning you can write data to them fast. Some techie probably started saying it and it caught on. Like saying FB instead of Face Book. The USB drive is the same inside as a flash drive is but we all call it a USB drive. Only the flash drive is capable of a bit higher speed than the USB drive is. Especially the high speed ones. Since in photography usually a flash on camera is used the term flash drive has stuck. Then there is the tiny micro-flash drive only it is packaged in a smaller package but the internal drive is the same as a flash drive. All tree are pretty much the same internally. They all are a micro-chip mounted on a piece of plastic with leads attached to contact points at the edge of the plastic card with some non-conductive epoxy resin put on top to hold it all in place.

I use Transcend SD Cards. They also have a lifetime warranty, which I've never had to use. Did you try the recovery program "Recuva" by Piriform software?

Don't know who this was to, Don ... you have to use Quote Reply - in order to capture the comment, of the person you wish yours directed to ...

For me - my Polaroid 64GB card that went bad ... it's totally unreadable, now ... not sure Recuva could do much with it ....

I also have some Transcend 128GB cards ... not had any problems with those ... amazing, since they cost me a pittance compared to Lexar & SanDisk!

Back in 2015 I read on Wikipedia that only Lexar, Samsung, SanDisk, and Toshiba made their own chips. Has there been industry realignment since then.

I did limited research on the reliability of SD cards and I was surprised at the numbers. Most distributors claim the MTBF of >3,000,000 hours. What that means is that on average there will be one failure every 3,000,000 hours. That probably explains why I've never had an SD card failure. I've always wondered about the obsession of having two cards in a camera for backup when in reality, the SD card is the most reliable component in the chain of possible camera failures. It is my firm belief that the principal cause of SD failure is mishandling. The contacts are exposed and it's very easy to grab the SD card by its contacts. This may result in static electricity being introduced to the card. Static electricity is the number one killer of electronic components. Furthermore, there are a limited number of actual chip manufacturers. Samsung is one of those and until recently, Micron in Idaho. Micron has gotten out of the chip business. The various names seen on SD cards are resellers that buy their chips from the chip manufacturer then have them packaged with their name on the SD card. Resellers such as SanDisk and others are not in the chip manufacturing business. They only package chips and it's not likely they actually do this themselves. They most likely go to a packaging house that packages for other resellers as well. I hope that I have not confused the UHH community.

Lexar was owned by Micron and is no longer in the SD business. Samsung is still a major supplier of memory chips. I'm not sure if Toshiba is still in the business. I've not heard that they have left the business so perhaps they are. I was never aware of SanDisk manufacturing their own chips. If they do, this is news to me.

Well yeah! That's kinda sorta what I thought I meant.
Knowing they may be bad, I'll load them with mp3s and give them away.
