How often does this happen?
I have never had one go south on me.
I dont reuse cards but save them for back up because they are so cheap.

Anyone have a guess as what % of cards become problematic?
What is the primary cause of the problem?

I had one go bad on me. Don't know what caused it. I learned that SanDisk has a lifetime warranty. Got a free replacement of a 64GB card.

I have experienced that only once. It was SanDisk and I did not know it had a lifetime warranty.

I have never had a card go bad, I also reuse my cards over and over again. Never had a problem doing that. I have no reason to have a collection of filled cards. They are inexpensive but not cheap.

Just had one play up in my phone. Some photos were only half saved - e.g. top half OK but bottom half just a solid colour. I assume it is on it's last legs. Didn't know about Sandisk's warranty

I use SanDisk, reuse many many times, never a failure since about 2002 or so. Only thing is over the years my memory cards have been replaced with larger capacity, think early on 1gb or 2gb were big (for me anyway). Today use 64gb & 32gb in DSLR and 16gb in Point and Shoot.

I use a 128gb SD card over and over. I have not ever had one go bad, now I have said I may be in trouble...

Just wondering, if you don't reuse your cards how do you know they don't go south? Are you constantly checking in to make sure your pictures are still there? Further, why would you ever want to use flash memory for long-term storage of your valuable pictures? And after you've saved up 50 or 75 or a hundred SD cards, how the heck do you figure out where any particular image is if you actually needed to retrieve it?

I have cards that are many years old now, and seem to function just fine. I do always Format each card after using it.

The two major reason why cards go bad;

Fingers on the contacts
Removing from camera or computer during read write session

Not sure if this qualifies, but an SD card I recently purchased seems to work fine in the camera but not one of my 3 card readers wants to read it. They all say "Card not formatted" even though I Format each time when loading in the camera. Connecting camera directly to PC allows download of images but that is not something I like to do. Anyone else ever hear of this?

The plot thickens I guess.
Why do you not like using the camera to download images directly?

I use micro. Sd cards They go in reg sd card adapters. If the contacts go bad (number one reason of add card failure). I just put micro card into an another adapter.

I made the mistake of ordering a couple of Samsung cards off of eBay. Turned out they were counterfeit. I didn’t use them for some time so I was stuck with them. I found out by googling counterfeit Samsung cards and they gave a description which they fit. They had continuous write errors and format problems. Only buy cards from B&H now. The biggest tip off was they were made in China. Samsung cards are only made in Korea. Oh well!

I got a 1TB Toshiba external hard drive for around $50. A lot cheaper than 15 64 GB SD cards and more reliable. You must not shoot a lot as I would fill more than one 64 GB SD card in a week of vacation and every 2-3 weeks at home.
