No we do not know what the OP's expectations are, that's why the use of the term "if". That is, **if** he expects sunshine all the time like on TV, then he may be sadly mistaken. "if", "may", those are modifiers you need to pay attention to when you read.

Now you can have the last word if you so wish. (Again, the use of "if".)

I'll take that opportunity, You don't get off free just by saying "if" as a justification. The main point you made was that an open top doesn't work in northern California, which is completely wrong. It just depends on the day and the location, sometime both together.

Be prepared for changeable weather. Enjoy the good times.

So very true - I just checked the 10 day forecast for Mendocino - Sun. 50% chance of rain Tue 15% wed 35% no prediction for wed "YET" - it looks like they are in for a typical spring weather pattern. Heck we even have one day of snow predicted for next week here where I live.

Not to be picky, but US 1 is on the east coast, US 101 is on the west coast. Wouldn't want you getting lost. US Routes and Interstates .....odd numbers North/South, even numbers East/West.
Routes start 1 on east coast, 2 in the North . Interstates run 4 in Florida, and 90 in North. 96 runs Detroit to Grand Rapids. Interstate 1 is west coast, 95, East coast. If Interstate has 3 numbers,, say 275 or 375....even numbers first, it.connects to other Interstate. If odd number first, it's a spur. Just some useless trivia on a gloomy Sunday afternoon.
Not to be picky, but US 1 is on the east coast, US... (show quote)

The California coast highway is California 1. US 101 is also a South to North route that at points merges with California 1 and at other places goes inland.

My son and I are planning to drive Rt 1 along the coast in a rented convertible mustang.

Flying into Oakland on the 15th. Then starting the drive from San Francisco on April 16th, heading north. Returning to San Francisco on the 19th to catch a evening flight back to Maryland out of Oakland.
We plan to spend 3 1/2 days on the road.

I am interested in suggestions on photo opportunities and how far up the coast I should plan between overnight stays.

Thanks,
Jim

north!!!
Mendocino? It appears that we have a few members who need remedial courses in reading and/or geography. 🤔🙄🙃

So what is your thought about the geographic relationship between San Francisco, rt 1, and Mendocino?

No worries, and you are correct about suggestions for Monterey which would fit your comment.

Hope today is a better day for you. Take care!

Some non-photo advise:
Check ahead for road conditions. We’ve had a lot of rain up north recently and sometimes that creates landslides and/or road closures.

Drive carefully! Highway 1 is very twisty and often next to very steep cliffs next the ocean.

But there are a lot of very photogenic opportunities along the way so it is worth it.

Have fun and be sure to share some of your photos.

Last time I looked Mendocino is about 100 miles or more NORTH of SF.

Yes. It also depends upon the OP's driving skills and the specific vehicle. I drive stick shifts and love the twisties, but I grew up and learned to drive in a similar environment with sun, rain, fog and snow, and cliffs. A well hung Mustang can be fun, but the average rental Mustang just isn't designed for these kinds of road conditions. And it depends upon the driver more than anything, you have to know how hard you can push any specific vehicle.

If not used to these kinds of roads do take it carefully, they can be treacherous to the inexperienced.

we did thiat a few years back and it was incredible. The only is that the road is so twisty turny it was hard to drive and enjoy the scenery. There are few places to pull over on most of the road and enjoy the view. Mendicino was spectacular. I was on a schedule and I made the mistake of dringn thru the redwood National forest at night, in a hurry to get to Fort bragg

Don't know about now but the last time I was on that route was on my way up to the eclipse in, what was it, August? I spent lots of time sitting in road closures(weekdays) then hours in slow lines of up to one hundred cars that moved very slowly. There are also the slow motorhomes! Best to stop and do photography and let the cars go.
My 10 day forecast shows possible rain in my area on about some of those days. Good news though, If it rains it's not likely to be foggy.
But any kind of weather makes for great photography, just different!!!

I’d stop by Muir Woods outside of SF. The early morning light in those trees can be magical. Have fun, coming from the east coast, you will love every minute of that drive.

Remember that there is only a bus service that goes to Muir Woods. You will have to park and take the shuttle in.
But it is worth the trip, if you have the time.

Also, the view of San Francisco from Treasure Island is very nice, in the day as well as night.
