My son and I are planning to drive Rt 1 along the coast in a rented convertible mustang.

Flying into Oakland on the 15th. Then starting the drive from San Francisco on April 16th, heading north. Returning to San Francisco on the 19th to catch a evening flight back to Maryland out of Oakland.
We plan to spend 3 1/2 days on the road.

I am interested in suggestions on photo opportunities and how far up the coast I should plan between overnight stays.

Thanks,
Jim

Driving North across the Golden Gate, allow a lot of time for traffic, the Bay area is super congested. Cut over to Stinson Beach and head north. Bodega Bay is incredible, has some great places to stay, and if you're a Hitchcock fan, The Birds was filmed there. Point Reyes is awesome, I've stayed in the Tamales Bay Resort in Inverness. Next day, north to Jenner/Fort Ross (must see) and Timbercove. The drive north of Jenner takes a long time, as the Hwy is very, very twisty. But beautiful. At Point Arenas, the San Andres Fault marches out into the Pacific which is just incredible.

28 miles north of Pt. Arena is Hwy 128, which drives through the Navarro River Redwoods and through some beautiful wine country to Hwy 101 in Cloverdale.

There you go, a 3 day trip. Bring sweaters, and a jacket. The coastal weather this time of the year alternates between Fog, some drizzle and sunshine.

DM me it you want more details.

I’d stop by Muir Woods outside of SF. The early morning light in those trees can be magical. Have fun, coming from the east coast, you will love every minute of that drive.

If you want to go to Muir Woods, reservations are now required:

It is well worth seeing

I did a similar trip several years ago in my RX7. We picked up CA 1 at Morro Bay and drove north to Rockport CA. It was the first time I had made it all the way to the Pacific coast and the journey unofficially started at Cape May NJ. We spent the night in San Francisco. When we reached Rockport we headed south east to Yosemite. If you like good food, sea food and a spectacular view, be sure the have dinner at the Cliff House, outside San Francisco, before you head north. Also, since you are taking your time, be sure to check out Lime Point, the north side of the Golden Gate.
Although 1 doesn't stick to the coast all the way, many long stretches of it does. It's hard to say how far to go in one day, it all depends on how often you stop and how long you stay in a spot. There are almost endless photo opportunities along the way, you have to decide those for yourself. The road leaves the coast just north of Rockport and doesn't make it back until you are near Eureka CA. Oregon is not that far from there. Enjoy your trip. I had a blast when I did it, especially in the RX7.

If you make it to Fort Bragg, I understanding construction has just been completed on a new spot where you may wish to spend the night. The owner is highly experienced in offering guests a thrilling stay. It's called The Bates Motel! 🙄😯☠️

Wow there is so much.
Just stop and enjoy every spot of interest to you. Do not set schedule by miles traveled.
I have at times only made a few miles in a whole day.
If you set a miles goal then you will be missing things while trying to meet that goal. Have no schedule but near the end of the day start looking for a place to stay.

May want to do that earlier. In 1992, my wife and I, with our 5 year old and 1 year old daughters, left Muir Woods area, heading for Los Angeles with those "plans". Our intention was to make the trip in two days. We started looking for a room early afternoon. We finally found space in a luxury hotel - at half price because it was so late ...... on the outskirts of LA!!
