Teton color not near as good as Wasatch (Utah). Wasatch in fall looks like somebody melted a box of crayons on the mountains!

It's interesting that in responses to a query "Tetons in the Fall" the west side of the mountain range is not mentioned whatsoever. I live on the west side, which locals here call "the quiet side" and see the peaks from my house windows. There are many nice vistas of the main Teton peaks on the west side and there are aspen groves that are gorgeous in the fall. IMHO it would be worth adding a day to your trip to explore this side also. The fame of the east side for it's scenery is well deserved but it's not the only place to see this beautiful mountain range. I would suggest doing some research on the west side. Btw, motel prices here are a fraction of those in Jackson and availability shouldn't be a problem.

Have a great trip - you are wise in beginning research on the area well in advance.

have a choice of Jackson Hole Lodge ( view of mountains, expensive ) or Snake River Lodge ) apparently decent location, good views depending upon room, better price ); any opinions ?

Go to Driggs Idaho, then to Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming. Buy a lift ticket, and ride up to about 9000 feet at the top. Go to the trail up the remaining hill, next the visitor center there at the top, and climb the trail maybe 50 feet higher to the top of the ridge. Suddenly you will be looking at the Grand Tetons; it is a stunning view, about like the first time you look into the Grand Canyon. At at 9000 feet you are also about half way up the height of the Tetons so the perspective is different from the usual. You can stay at the resort as well, but I did not do that. But it might fit your plans for one day, and I think the lift ticket is included if you do. Anyhow, have fun!

Check the closing date on that before planning.

Wife and I were in this area this past mid September; stayed at the Lake Jackson Lodge. Watch weather very carefully; we got hit with plenty of snow which made for difficult photography and driving into the park area. Nice trip and would we go back, you bet.

Clouds are always good to have in the sky.

Yes - The "Iconic Views" are very easy to find, as pull-offs offer those - There are a few gravel roads to get a little better shots as well. I often take a topographic map with me. They are easy to read as well.

The peak color will vary some each year, but in the high country, it is almost always around September 21st. The color lasts longer and may be later by streams and rivers...

We travel to Jackson a couple of times every year. Owned a condo at Spring Creek Ranch (on top of butte just north of Jackson) and enjoyed marvelous panoramic views of the Teton range and the valley below. Very nice place to stay.

I agree with Snappy Happy about Jackson Lake Lodge. It does really have the very best views of the Tetons. That said, if you are going to Jackson Hole, you also should explore driving down US 89 south through the Snake River Canyon all the way to Alpine Junction. Great stretches of Fall colors, mostly aspen, but some rocky mountain maples, as well. Grand Teton Nat'l. Park has great views and colors, as well. It was, and still is, sort of in my back yard and I have a lot of good photos from eighteen years of Fall in the Tetons. Another possibility is taking US 287/26 toward Dubois. It is a wonderful experience.

Uh!!??!!

Do you mean Me = JamesR ??

If so.

These were made during the month of June (6) - The one at Sunset was about 7:30P. -- The one at Dawn was... ? Hell! I do not know - All I do, like many other photographers, is to get to the location as to where you want the shot about one hour Before you will open the shutter.

Thank you, Ed, for your inquiry.

What stunning photographs!! I spend a decent amount of time in Grand Teton, although never as much as I would like - work, and now 50 miles further away. It is almost an embarrassment of riches and I hope to spend more time there this summer. Congratulations on your outstanding shots; they are truly wonderful!
