it allows me to communicate something. Exactly what, is context-sensitive.
Besides, I flunked first grade art. Couldn’t color between the lines...

That is the best answer for what I feel when taking photos. And, I like to share with friends the scenes and objects that intrigue and inspire me.

I am with you in that boat. I couldn't draw or color worth a darn in elementary school. Nature photography lets me create and compose without having to worry about my "tree" looking like over-cooked broccoli.
I am 74 years old and have been taking photos ever since my father bought me a "good" camera for my Bar Mitzvah. It was a Kodak Retina IIIC and I took slides using Kodachrome Film which had an ASA of 10. I still have many of these slides, which I have scanned, and the color is still good. My grandson asked me "what is a slide?". I definitely am the "family historian". Many of the older pictures have become incredibly valuable to both myself and my family. Two of my grandchildren enjoy taking pictures with me and they have the patience to take 10 or more pictures of the same object. In fact, one of them is a Sr. in High School and is editor in chief of his yearbook.
Most important, I think that photography has made me a much happier person. I see and appreciate things that other people do not see. I observe the world as a series of pictures. I absolutely love photography, cameras and photo software.

Time is not kind to any of us. To preserve the moment as witness the past is the only reason I can attest,
Maybe photography is similar to painting a picture. The next one is going to be better than the one you have in front of you. Definitely a continuous education. Maybe that is the motivation.

I think most people feel the need to create something from time to time. I have no physical talent - can't draw a straight line with a ruler - but I frequently feel the urge to want to create something that I will be proud of, and that others will enjoy seeing. I think that is just human nature. I choose to use a camera because it is the one medium where I can create my vision using technical capabilities because I don't have the physical talent to draw or paint.
It is an outlet for my right brain. I tend to live on the left side of my brain. I do it for fun and for myself, and occasionally I'm rewarded with a really nice image.
To all my fellow photographers.... It was such a pleasure hearing from you all... It was nice to share our personal feelings & passions with each other. I have enjoyed reading all of the comments and hope others feel as I do.....

Thanks for starting this thread. Some very inspiring comments along the way. What a wonderful medium we have for expressing and documenting and just plain having fun.
I get the urge to do something creative now and then. Sometimes it's photography, sometimes playing music and even once in a while writing. Sad that I'm never really satisfied with the results. I suppose I come closest when it comes to photography. Occasionally I'll get one I'm proud enough to show.

I do it because I can't draw or paint so a camera gives me the ability to express how I feel or where I've been Or who I've met along the way.
